Explicit Contextualized Vocabulary Instruction

Center on Literacy and Deafness developed three interventions that are available to teachers. Below is a brief description of the intervention that improves vocabulary. Please follow the links to learn more about the program.

Explicit Contextualized Vocabulary Instruction (ECV-DHH) is an approach to content area vocabulary instruction for use with young Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DHH) students. The explicit and in-context instructional strategies are designed to teach students new vocabulary and give them practice in expressing target words in connected language. CLAD data show that ECV-DHH can be successfully used with children who use listening and spoken language, total communication, or ASL. The ECV-DHH manual and sample instructional units are currently available on our website at Explicit Contextualized Vocabulary Instruction.
