Prompt # 6

Response Prompt # 6 Changu Kang

In Inside higher Ed article, it shows one story about an incident during the class activity. I think he used this kind of activity because he is anti- christian and he also though it would not effect this much impact. If I were in the class of him. I would not step on the piece of pare, which was written Jesus. I am not Christian. But I would feel really disrespectful toward humble Christians. As he said, it is a piece of paper. All student needed to do was stepping on a paper. After the beginning of the article, most of the information is about Poole is back or not. In my opinion, He would not think it is not that effective, since it is stepping on a piece of paper. However, he could not feel rudeness because he was an anti- Christian.

NY times article. it shows the examples that media like to avoid to show offensive language. I think media want to avoid to use offensive languages, because no media want to be the first one that uses it. I think it is only a matter of who starts off. It would be so ridiculous that all the media got the same information, but outputting different things. This is because the offensive language gets “purified” and being distorted the meaning of the sentence. In my opinion, it is time to express what people use in the media too.

To be honest, I do not see big similarity  between these two articles. Inside higher Ed article is representing that one professor want them to step on a piece of paper that written Jesus. NY times article was representing that it is time to express all the offensive languages regardless how harsh they are. I think I could not get a good idea about the first article.

  1. You make some good points about the NYT article–that it’s interesting how everyone gets the same story, but then it’s told differently because people choose to “purify” the language. Great point.

You say that Poole is anti-Christian. What are your thoughts to the article offering Poole’s religious beliefs? How might that complicate your response?
