Mea Culpa. I didn’t know it, but I am guilty. I regularly violate the rules of netiquette. I don’t belong to any online groups, but I do keep in touch with family and friends on Facebook. I will call out anyone who is being disrespectful. According to Question #2 of the Netiquette challenge, I should not respond to someone who is being a jerk. In a more public situation, such as twitter, I regularly ignore flamers, but on my Facebook page, I can’t ignore attacks against a family member or close friend. The blood of my hillbilly forefathers runs deep in my veins. We have been known to kill people over a stolen pig but we wouldn’t defend our kinfolk? Ha! I didn’t realize it was a violation of the rules of the internet to defend ones family and friends. It’s a sucky rule and I expect to be a repeat offender. Apologies in advance to the net.

President & primary researcher, James D. Agresti, BS in Mechanical Engineering. Chairman of the board of directors, Stephen F. Cardone, BS in Psychology. Accuracy |
Frequently cites their own work from other research articles as factual support. Facts are taken from valid primary resources but presented in such a way that can easily lead to false attributions of cause/effect. |
Cites are from primary or reputable/peer reviewed sources. Most are hyperlinked. |
Purpose | Mission statement: “The mission of Just Facts is to research and publish verifiable facts about the leading public policy issues of our time.” | Mission statement: “We are a nonpartisan, nonprofit “consumer advocate” for voters that aims to reduce the level of deception and confusion in U.S. politics.” |
Analysis: Both websites present facts but the bias is palpable on the justfacts.com website. Their facts are presented to support their libertarian/conservative point of view. Their articles were strictly in opposition to Democrats and/or liberal policies. No facts were presented that conflicted with Republican/Libertarian views or statements. They present a lot of raw data but the reader is left to make false attributions to much of it. As a wise statistics professor once told me, how you present the data is almost as important as the data itself.
Conversely, factcheck.org is an equal opportunity watchdog. Are they liberal? Perhaps, as much of academia is often accused of liberal bias. However, they point out untruths and half-truths from all political persuasions on a wide range of topics. That is the purpose of a fact checker. I also support the financial disclosure policy of factcheck.org. It was unclear who funds justfacts.com. In political views, money matters.
Certainly most of us, if not all, have personal points of view. Presenting only the information that supports your worldview makes you a propagandist, not a fact checker.

Comments: | Basically, all six search engines produced similar/same results. The biggest difference is that the CDC articles were only included in the Google and the Yahoo results. I am a fan of our hometown Center for Disease Control and Prevention, and would prefer their content over Hofstra University (no reflection intended against Hofstra). I would avoid both Yahoo & Dogpile as they are fraught with advertising, with Yahoo in the lead for most unrelated content. If I am searching for scholarly articles about autism, do I really care that some guy stitched up a copy of the dress from “Beauty and the Beast” for a marriage proposal prop? Yahoo claims that nugget is “Autism Scholarly News.” Dogpile’s worst offense was all the ad content dispersed within and formatted to look like search results. I know all search engines have ad content. That is how they get paid. All I ask is that it is easily recognized as an advertisement and not results I intend to peruse. Google still gets my vote… until someone can tell me why they shouldn’t. |
Unit 2 Planning For Success
Planning for Success
- Think about why you are in school. This is your motivation. Want to earn more money? Learn a new skill? Become more proficient in your job? Remind yourself! It will be easier to run the gamut if you keep your eyes on the prize. Attitude is everything. If you try to convince yourself a class is too hard or not worth it, you are setting yourself up for failure and disappointment.
- Establish a schedule and do your best to stick to it. Block times for study, including adequate time to complete lengthier or more difficult assignments. Remember that life often interferes with best intentions. You can never plan for sickness or an accident, computer failures or an impromptu party. If your work is ahead of schedule, it allows for more flexibility.
- Be kind to yourself. Get plenty of sleep, eat well and exercise to keep those brain cells in good working order! Reward yourself for a task completed or a job well done.
- If all else fails, review number 1. Remember why you are here.
