Justina Ireland

Justina Ireland is an American science-fiction and fantasy author of young adult fiction. She was also a former editor-in-chief of the FIYAH Literacy Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction. In her teen years, Ireland, aspired to become a historian. She enlisted in the military at 19, where she served as an Arabic linguistics expert. She is now the the director of logistics and weapon-system support for the U.S Navy and she also teaches creative writing at York College of Pennsylvania. 

Justina holds a BA in History from Armstrong Atlantic State University and an MFA in writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University. She is currently pursuing her PhD in English Literature. 

Her best-know novel, Dread Nation, is an alternate history set in the 19th century U.S. Dread Nation received largely positive reviews that praised Ireland for her skillful approach to dealing with difficult issues related to slavery and its legacy. Ireland won the World Fantasy Award and was a nominee for the Nebula Award.
