Crystal’s Donation Project

Children’s Literature Association Book Desert Project

My name is Crystal Roque. As a student at Georgia State University, I have had the opportunity to learn about the lack of books and resources in our nation states, and local communities. Many schools, specifically those with a higher black and Latino/hispanic demographic, have shown higher risks of experiencing book deserts. For this reason, I wanted to put my focus on the Children’s Literature Association Book Deserts Project.

Goal Statement: My goal is to create as much outreach as possible throughout our communities to bring in book donations.

How and where to donate:

There are many ways to donate new or lightly used children’s books. The main way is to donate directly to the schools listed below or compile books within your communities and then have them mailed. I personally reached out to people within my church and used my social media accounts to inform people about this collection.

Middle School

Salem Middle School c/o Dr. Deborah Cooley

High School

What should you donate?

When considering what books to donate it is important to keep in mind the content of the books you will be donating. I encouraged others to donate book series or any of their favorite middle school reads. Feel free to donate any books nonetheless, but be mindful that religious books have reached capacity.
