Starting Summer semester 2024 Perusall added an extra step to course setup in which instructors are asked to support Perusall through one of these three methods:
- Purchase an institutional license
- Adopt a textbook from the Perusall catalog
- Require the students to pay an access fee to participate in the course.
By default, the vendor has highlighted the third option, and a $15 fee is recommended, but this fee is optional and at the discretion of the instructor.
We strongly discourage you from charging your students to access the Perusall content.
To avoid forcing the students pay an access fee:
- Select $0 on the payment options bar.
- Check None of these makes sense for me right now.
- Click Continue at the bottom right of the page.
In the pop-up window, you will be asked to select a reason for your choice. Select any reason that makes sense to you and click OK.
To verify that the students are not required to pay an access fee,
- Select Course Home from the left menu,
- Select the Students tab
Make sure the nonpayment symbol does not appear next to any of the students.
If you see the nonpayment symbol next to one or more students, that means the course is set to require the students to pay an access fee.
Please Note:
If you unintentionally set the course to require an access free from the students, you can reverse that as long as none of the students made a payment.
To change the Student Cost setting,
- Click on Course Home from the left menu.
- Click on the Getting Started tab at the top.
- Click on the Student Cost subtab to the left.
- Change the payment amount to $0.
- Check None of these makes sense for me right now.
- Click Continue at the bottom right of the page.
- On the pop-out window, select any reason that makes sense to you and click OK.
If even one student makes a payment, you will not be able to change that setting and all students will need to pay the access fee.
