One of my favorite movies is Drumline (2002). This movie perfectly displays black culture through the aspect of an HBCU band. The actor Nick Cannon has the main role in this film, he is playing a dude named Devon who is a talented drummer for the Atlanta A&T band team. Devon doesn’t know to properly read music and can only remember notes based off of visualizing someone else playing the drums. Furthermore, Devon has a lot of ups and downs such as earning a high rank on the band team and also being dismiss for his behavior. The aspect of this movie that left a lasting impression on me is Devon working with his rival section leader Sean to learn music notes and get back on the band team. I think this displays that preparation and hard work is superior then talent.
2/2 Story Seeking
0:57I played quarterback.
0:59And two weeks earlier, two defenders,
1:02almost 500 pounds of muscle,
1:04crushed me at the same time.
1:07It sounds scary, but honestly, it’s pretty normal in my line of work.
1:12This time, though,
1:14my leg was bending where it shouldn’t.
1:18I had what they call a compound spiral fracture,
1:20which means that my leg was twisted and snapped diagonally,
1:24kind of like a corkscrew.
1:26And yes, it’s as painful as it sounds.
1:30I knew right there on the field that my season was done.
1:34What took me a little longer to figure out
1:36was that my life was about to change forever.
1:41Two years after that gruesome injury,
1:43I actually ran back out onto that field and led my team to the playoffs.
1:48(Applause)
1:54But what I want to talk about today isn’t some rousing comeback story
1:57where the crowd chants my name.
2/2 Storytelling
Growing up throughout elementary school and so on reading wasn’t my favorite. Moreover, I did have a favorite book series that I loved reading called Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney. Whenever I read that book I was deeply connect to the narrative and could visualize events in the book as if I was there. Also, this book deals with real issues that children like me could relate to. Without this book my reading experience would have been less entertaining. The way the author Jeff Kinney draws my attention with his books is his unique humor in storytelling. Furthermore, there was a new book released yearly and I was always eager to have it! In conclusion, Diary of a Wimpy Kid will forever be my favorite book series.
2/9 Comparative Writing
A. The narrative that speaks to me the most is my storytelling post talking about Diary of a Wimpy Kid books and how they made me love reading. Also, this story is more vivid and engaging because it was written about myself and I can relate to it.
B. I wouldn’t revise the other two, nothing is missing in my opinion.
C. A good story to me is when someone talks about something that is interesting to me or has humor. Some effective storytelling techniques are using attention grabbers and rhetorical analysis.
I can very much relate your love for Diary of a Wimpy Kid as a child. I found that the story stuck with me as well and impacted me in a similar way.
That’s a good summary of the movie Drumline.I liked the movie too, and I enjoyed the way you explained how Devon had to go about things differently to get to where he wanted
Reading your “storytelling” brought back a lot of nostalgia for me. It was well written and the nostalgia was a great use of Pathos in my opinion. Well done.
Heyy Cam!!!! I really liked that you mentioned a movie that was based on HBCU Culture. Also I am a huge Jeff Kinney fan when it comes with Diary of a Wimpy Kid. I enjoyed reading your narration about how you were playing football.
