 Landscape, Red, Hot & Bezold

Split Complementary

Bezold

Two-in-One with Text

For this project we had to paint using acrylic paint, which we had to figure out how it works differently from canvas paper. However, the main focus of this project was exploring many colors using primary colors as well as white and black. Not only that but after the end of the assignment we had to know what was analogous, split complementary colors, and other color theories.

In this project, I had to choose a photo of a landscape that contains a man-made object. Then when choosing we had to draw it six times on the 5 by 7 inches of canvas paper. Before drawing it out, we had to grid it out so it will be easier to draw it on the remaining 5 pieces of canvas paper. When finishing it, I had to follow 6 different instructions on choosing the color for the drawing. The first was called a postcard as it was to paint it as realistically as possible. The second was named Analogous, in which I had to use an analogous color palette (I chose red) and even add texture to it. The third one was split complementary as I had chosen a color and used the opposite color from the color wheel. The colors I chose were orange, blue green, and blue violet. The fourth and fifth one was called the Bezold or spreading effect, which means outlining the painting in black and the other white. The result of this is for the viewers’ eyes to see a contrast of color even though both are painted in the same colors. For this, I used split complementary colors like blue violet, red orange, and yellow green. The final piece was called Two-in-One with Text which I had to paint cool in one area and warm in another area and I had to write a word in the picture. So, I used the man-made object as some sort of separation between the warm and cool colors. For example, for the cool area, I used red violet and blue behind the bridge. And the warm area I used yellow, orange, and yellow green in front of the bridge. In order to finish, I had to put a text in the paintings, and in the end, I chose the word peace.
