Power Lines and Cables in the DR

So far, my experience here in the Dominican Republic has been one to remember! Over the past almost two weeks, I have been emerged into the culture here – even though there is still much more to see and experience – and it has been wonderful! Even though there are so many wonderful things about the Dominican Republic, I have definitely witnessed some things that can be of danger to the populations here. On Day 5 of the trip here, my colleagues, professors and I went to a poorer area of the Dominican Republic and visited an holistic health personnel, named Dr. Pichardo. After we spent time engaging with him, we went to observe the neighborhood with two community leaders to see what it was like living in that area so that we could have meaningful conversation with Dr. Pichardo afterwards as well. While we were walking, I saw a huge cluster of power lines and cables overhead sidewalks and on main street ways and walks in majority of the area. I heard that people tend to do that to        share or steal power but that can be a hazardous situation. For one, there were lots of children in that area playing outside lots of cars parked near or under those cables.

God forbid if a cable broke off, or if the entire bundle of cables came falling down on a child or multiple children, that would be a tragedy. So, seeing that up close and in person was my first time ever doing so and it really opened my eyes to see that the place that I come from and the place that I am in now, here in the Dominican Republic, our perspectives and perceptions are different based on how what we have been exposed to.

Victoria, I am not sure if all of you knew that Dr McCool and myself, were leaving the school on the 2nd day we arrived in DR and I walked into the power lines in front of the school and there was a live wire on the ground right next to Dr McCool , that jumped up and sparked almost electrocuting her. That was crazy.
