Just hearing about the Critical Thinking in the Age of Misinformation module?

If you are here to learn more about the Critical Thinking in the Age of Misinformation Module or contemplating adopting it in one or more of your courses, watch the webinar below and/or browse the PowerPoint slides!  I strongly recommend watching the Webinar before or after browsing the module in the iCollege building section.  More on that below.

If you would like to browse the module in iCollege or go ahead and adopt it for your course, please request to be added to the module’s building section in iCollege.  Email this request to brobertson@gsu.edu from your GSU email account so that your GSU user ID is indicated.

Importing the Module:

FYI: The last update of the module was Summer 2023.

The zip files for importing the Critical Thinking in the Age of Misinformation module into your iCollege course section is shared with faculty in an Announcement in the module’s iCollege building section.

Module Implementation Guide

MODULE IMPORT:

for those adopting the module for the first time and those needing the update.

  • If you are using the module for the first time, go straight to the module course package download link in the module’s iCollege building section.  Note where you save the zip file once downloaded or simply import it from your “downloads” file. Go to your course section and select “Import Components” through a “course package”.  Choose “all components”,  or do an advanced import and deselect the discussions and essay quizzes if you are sure you will not use them. Use the Module Import Instructions mentioned above for more details and recommendations. You will select the zip file.  Do not unzip it or open the zip file.  Just import the zip file then see the Module Implementation Guide.
  • Those who used the module in a previous semester:
    • The simple way to go about this is to start fresh with the course package zip file shared in iCollege and mentioned above. To do this, refrain from importing the original module and its components when you copy your old course section to the new semester section.  You can then “import” the updated zip file of the module below (choose Import and Course Package).  If you have already imported the module to your new sections, you can download the zip file below but you will now have this new second version of the module.  If so, delete the previous module and other components such as surveys, discussions, etc.
    • Advanced import: Use this if you do not want to delete items in a new iCollege section in which you already imported the original module, OR if you want to retain any significant modifications you made to the original module. If that is the case, you will need to use the Advanced option after selecting Import and Course Package. Select only Content, Surveys (import only the Social Mania practice – remember to delete the old SM survey), Question Library (Social Mania practice questions only), and Release Conditions.  Then delete the new CT module that was created so your students see only one module. All the html files will be updated in the original modified module in your course.
    • Last step (both methods):
      • Don’t forget to ensure you do not have repeats of grade columns, discussions, etc.
      • Check the CT file folder in “Manage Files” and make sure the Fake News file that has “UNDER CONSTRUCTION” in the file name is NOT there.  You may have removed it already when instructed to do so last Spring. If it is there, REMOVE IT. Then and after you’ve imported the updated module, you must update the link for 1.1 Fake News with the correct Fake News lesson.html

If you are rusty on how to import a course package SEE THE MODULE IMPORT INSTRUCTIONS LINKED ABOVE.  But I have simplified them below for those that have imported course packages before.

Test It!

Once you’ve imported the course package and hid or unhid necessary items, go to Classlist and switch to Demo Student and attempt to complete at least the first to lessons and their review quizzes. Note that just like students, you will need to complete the practice activities within each lesson.  Your answers do not have to be correct; just need the practice activity (iCollege survey) attempt to be submitted to gain access to the review quiz.

HELP! What if something is wrong?

If you need help and cannot quickly figure out what is wrong AFTER importing the module, simply add User ID brobertson as an Instructor to your course section using the “enroll” option in “Class List”.  Email brobertson@gsu.edu with the section title and number and your issue.  I can typically find and fix the problem in a matter of minutes!
