Project 1: Negative Space project

Under The Kitchen Sink

This project’s objective is to draw the negative space, which is the space between the objects.

For this project, the material and tools we used were 18 x 24-inch drawing paper, a charcoal pencil, and an eraser.

The Process

The process of making this piece and learning the overarching theme of negative, which is the spaces in between, was challenging. The idea and concept of negative space were so new to me that it was confusing at first. In class, we had many practices before moving on to the final piece of negative space. It requires a lot of focus and knowing where you are, so constantly focusing is necessary. Often time even in practice, I tend to get lost in the object rather than the space in between the object itself. For the project, I chose the kitchen sinks since the sink I used at the time was pretty neat and clean verse the bathroom sinks. I drew from a pretty comfortable eye level which was helpful. I first looked at the overall shape of the stuff under the sink and started from the left to the right, focusing on one object at a time. This worked for me; however, the proportion became a problem, so after I finished drawing the space, I erased and adjusted the proportion.

Feedback

the feedback I received from this was a nice comment, I got comments on how dark my lines were, not in a wrong way, but they are strong lines that came from my usage of a #4b charcoal pencil. I also got a comment from professor Lisa on the left side of the drawing seems off, or something seems missing, and that I could have even added more things under the sink, and this was good to hear, an encouragement to take risks. I was set on making it easy for myself by not having too many under my sink, but I think having more things would have added a little more dynamic and allowed me to challenge myself more on the spacing between the objects.
