Levy, Steven. “How Can We Achieve Age Diversity in Silicon Valley?” The Medium. N.p., 19 Oct. 2015. Web.
In a new conversation series within The Medium entitled “You Tell Me”, editor Steven Levy constructs an article claiming the there is ageism within his job at “Silicon Valley” (an internet company) and it needs to be addressed. Levy states “In Silicon Valley there is one underrepresented group in particular — one that by law is entitled to fair treatment in hiring and employment practices ..You know…old people” (para 2).
First Steven uses personal accounts at Silicon Valley as evidence. For example he states, “Generally, it’s been my observation that when someone over a certain age gets hired at a technology company, that candidate is not simply one of a group of people who applied for the job” (para 6). He then goes on to say that these older individuals usually have some sort of known accomplishments and generate “giddy chatter” upon announcement (why’d they hire x??).
Steven then addresses that there’s a need for change within his firm. “In my view, age information should be included in those diversity reports, to underline the need for change— and, even more important, those in charge of company cultures should view age diversity as a plus”. (para 8). He later goes on to tell that he reached out to someone higher up to bring the discussion of age diversity up within the next meeting and they agreed.
I believe this would be a great source for secondary data. This is a first hand account of agism within the digital would and it is happening at an internet company. Anyone interested in agism and digital environments could defiantly find this source useful.
