July 14: Short Trip to Arembepe

Olá! I am so glad this day was my day to post because it was one of my favorite days of this trip thus far.

Before heading to Arembepe, we stopped by Centro Cultural Berimbau Arte. Berimbau Arte not only specializes in teaching children Capoeira, but students also attend to learn reading, writing, mathematics, and more in unique ways. We were greeted with drums and singing, then a child grabbed our hands and brought us into the circle to do Capoeira with them. I enjoyed that warm welcome before learning all about the school and the history of Capoeira. We brought backpacks, school supplies, and toys for each student. The look of excitement on every child’s face made me feel very emotional. I am glad we were able to come and make their days as they made ours. I hope that even when Miguel and Mel are no longer able to teach, Berimbau Arte continues to be well-respected and a great influence on the children in the community, as it is so needed.

After our visit to the school, we headed to Arembepe where it was time to indulge in relaxation and enjoy the views A Capela has to offer us. On arrival, we changed into our swimsuits to eat lunch and enjoy the beach for the next few hours. When it came time to eat dinner, we began with a toast. Each person stood up and made a speech about what they were grateful for, then we ‘ching chinged’ our glasses with ~intense~ eye contact. As we were reflecting it really dawned on us that our last days of this trip were coming to an end, and we’d soon have to return back to Georgia sadly.

We spent the rest of our evening together drinking Guaraná (a new hot commodity), singing, and playing games in the game room together. I will forever associate Unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield with this trip.
