Relaxation – Moqueca – Projecto Berimbau Arte

After a long, eventful, and enriching two weeks, the crew headed to Pousada A Capela in Arembepe. This bed and breakfast stay was something that I feel like myself and everyone else needed after concluding our work for the program. My day started with breakfast and a bit of yoga. Relaxation was in the air as I noticed how others rocked in their hammocks or decided to sunbathe after visiting the beach.

Eventually, I walked myself down to the beach and admired the view. The waters were calming and it was refreshing to see my peers enjoying their stay, as well. In doing this, I was able to finally breathe and take in all that this program has offered me. I reflected on the connections that I’ve been able to foster and the outlook on what is next to come when I arrive back home.

Soon after, it was time for another class but not just any class. This class ended with me enjoying Moqueca, a traditional Bahian stew. This was definitely another example of how African influences remain present within Brazilian culture. At the start of class, we were met with an array of vegetables, meats, and ingredients. The wonderful chefs at Pousada A Capela blessed us with a step by step tutorial of how to make this dish and by 1PM, lunch was served. I enjoyed this stew so much and it easily has become one of my top 3 dishes that I’ve tried while here. I’m not much of a cook, but I’ll try my hand at making this one day, for sure!

Not too long after lunch, the bus arrived and it was time to say goodbye to Arembepe. On our way out, we stopped at Projecto Berimbau Arte. Here, we got an idea of what the project does to help kids and families within the community. The kids do activities that target reading, cooking, math, environmental science, capoeira, and much more. We also learned how they make the Berimbau instrument that is used during capoeira. After, there was a small intermission where we partnered with the kids to paint traditional indigenous symbols. Shoutout to Jasmine for my artwork!

On our way out, we got the chance to see the kids play capoeira and man they were pretty impressive. And of course we couldn’t leave without putting our capoeira skills to the test!

All in all, Brazil owes me nothing! Hard work truly pays off and I’m grateful to have had this opportunity. Today was the perfect chance to recharge, but also to continue my learning. While basking in the beauty that is Brazil, it’s also been an honor to learn about the challenges they’re facing, learn about their culture and interact within the communities.
