After a long, yet exciting, week of lectures and cultural activities, students were free to enjoy the beauty of Salvador however they pleased. My host mom, roommate, and I decided to take advantage of the beautiful weather and visit the local Porto da Barra beach; one of the most popular beaches in the city! This 300 metres long beach is convenient for socializing, grabbing a drink (or two ;)), playing soccer, and taking a dip in the Atlantic Ocean. As today was a Sunday, the beach was PACKED with tourists and locals alike. Many people were gathered to enjoy the cool waters on a such a hot day; a perfect way to get some well needed Vitamin D. The view overlooking the Santo Antônio Lighthouse was a dream.
One of the highlights of the day was when I got to try Salvador’s most renowned street food, acarajé. A delicious snack made of a fritter fried in palm oil, with shrimp, black eyed peas purée and green tomato. No wonder why this dish is sold in almost every part of the city! Muito Bom!
We spent a beautiful afternoon in the sun until it was time to return home for the evening. For those who love the beach and the ocean, if you are ever in Salvador, I highly recommend paying a visit to Porto da Barra beach. There’s something in store for everyone from the children building sandcastles on the shore to teenagers/young adults diving off a small cliff! (But take caution as the waves and tides were high, ideal for those who are strong swimmers and/or like to surf/boogie board). It was bittersweet to say goodbye to the beach as the weather took a turn from hot and sunny to rainy. I’m glad I got to experience living like the locals! Tchau for now,
