DIA CINCO!!

We have officially made it to day five! I can say that I finally feel like I am getting the hang of things in the Dominican Republic. Today we visited the school of public health at the University of Autonoma. We had the opportunity to listen to a presentation from the Director of the school of public health, Dr. Pena. She gave us insight into the public health system of the DR. What we learned is that up until 2001 the DR had no public health system. There was no infrastructure in place for community health and wellness. She also shared it took them 15 years to implement and regulate their system to the public. The Dr is in the very beginning stages of creating the public health system the Dominican Republic needs.

After her lecture, we took a brief tour of the rest of the University. Their campus reminds me a lot of the college campuses we have in the United States (but more tropical). There are students all around socializing and commenting to their destinations. What stuck out to me were the many murals we passed on campus. They were all beautifully painted and brought so much life to the school.

This mural, in particular, was my favorite. It is located outside the library building. I loved the contrast of colors and style of painting. It looked like a beautiful mosaic art piece.

Another part of the day that I enjoyed was our walk to Baskin Robins to get some ice-cream! It was fun walking down the street with my classmates. We also tackled a few challenges such as communicating with store workers without a translator and crossing the streets without any DR native guide to assist us. Those two things may not seem like much, but it is much harder to communicate with others of a different language, especially if you grew up in the spoiled United States. Also, the driving in the DR will have you on edge! Their style of driving is more aggressive rather than defensive/passive driving we have back at home, so it was scary trying to maneuver through traffic without being hit by a car. However, we accomplished both tasks gracefully.

We ended the day with a seminar with the CEO of Esperanza, Alexandra. She was very influential to my classmates and me. She helped identify some hidden beliefs I didn’t know I had. She talked about following her heart and doing what she felt right inside, and for her that was micro-financing.  She works with people on the island to help them extreme highs and lows of income. She also assists with financial education on how to save and generate income by themselves. With her program, she is helping to stabilize many families and businesses. My favorite part of her talk was when she asked us what poverty was to us. We all answered with responses about low income, being homeless, being jobless, being dependent, etc. Then she explained that when she asked a group of people, we would consider being in poverty the same question they responded with answers such as “having no happiness,” “having no joy,” and “being without their family.” That will be something I remember forever. That was the moment I realized that these people do not feel sorry for themselves, and I shouldn’t either. The first few days here I had so much empathy for the people living here but what they have been teaching me is the importance of resilience. The importance of non-tangible value. They are teaching me to hold more value in things that I cannot buy. I cannot buy my family or love. You cannot buy true happiness. They are all things earned and acquired through relationships with others and the relationship with yourself. That is the true meaning of success.

Netiquette

I was actually surprised when I didn’t score a perfect score on the netiquette quiz. I thought I knew everything about how to act on the internet but apparently i didn’t. One new fact I learned was that it is proper etiquette to not respond to hateful/negative comment on your blog or picture. Even if you responded politely and reminded that person to only say “respectful things” towards others, it is still better to just not comment at all.

  • Currency: I was able to find topics that were relevant and current to issues/topics that we experience today. Topics such a sex trafficking, racial issues, and energy were some articles that were featured on the home page. All of these topics are current issues but as I was looking through the citations of the article I noticed that the sources were quite outdated. For example, the racial issues article had sources dated back as far as 1997, but that doesn’t mean the information is wrong or obsolete (as we know we still suffer racial issues).
  • Relevance: This website does an excellent job of giving you important detailed information. The only flaw I would see is that some articles are EXTREMELY long and filled with maybe too much information making it overwhelming for the reader. I also like how the information doesn’t show a bias, just simply giving the reader facts on the topic.
  • Authority: I was not able to find an author on any of the articles I read. I also did not find a publisher for the sight. The website does state the following, “Just Facts is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization.

Information provided by Just Facts is not legal, tax, or investment advice.”

  • Accuracy: The information is accurate in my opinion. Based on the two articles I read everything made sense to myself and the information I already knew.
  • Purpose: I believe the people behind the website just wanted to provide reliable and accurate information. Especially on topics that tend to have such extreme biases. They want to provide a reliable site to get the correct information and skip going through useless websites gathering information.

  • Currency: Most of the articles on the website are about the presidential race. I did come across a fee other articles but they still tended to lend towards topics somehow related to the government. All articles were up to date all being dated in 2016. As you can imagine since the articles are about the presidential race all the information is current and up to date.
  • Relevance: I was very surprised that the article I read didn’t have any bias information leaning towards either political party. All the information was very factual and wasn’t filled with bias opinions. The article I read specifically actually talked about the top false and misleading claims by the presidential candidate. Simply setting the record straight. Although this article was to correct and “set the record straight” about claims Hillary Clinton made. I also find articles setting Trump straight on several statements he made that were wrong.
  • Authority: The website does list the authors of each article and the time it was posted or last updated. The website has a small staff of 8 people that all have background in public policy.
  • Accuracy: To be completely honest I don’t pay much attention to the current events of the presidential race so I wouldn’t know it the information was factual based on my knowledge. But after skimming through some articles and from what I hear and saw for myself it looks that the information is accurate.
  • Purpose: I assume the purpose of this website is to provide further insight into the presidential race and the debates that occur. I also believe it was really important for the creators to provide factual information because MANY websites will feed lies to make people conform to their opinion or only report one-sided news on the presidential campaign.

I decided to do my search on “how to grow hair faster” because I have in the past search this a hundreds of occasions simply trying to gain longer hair. I know almost every girl in the world has search this topic as well. First thing I noticed from every search engine is that they had the exact same ads! I mean the EXACT same ads. This happened because the meta search engines were just gathering links from the  general search engine ( most ads originated from Google). I also noticed that meta engines had more ads displayed on their pages which made it annoying looking for information.  What I did like about the meta engine was that it showed the most popular results which in turn was always the most helpful information. On the general search engines I would run across personal blogs which had so many different opinions, making it hard to come to an conclusive answer. In the future I may start using meta engines to save time from sifting through pages that are not as helpful to me.

How To Be a Successful Online Student

Hello fellow classmates! This semester we are all taking on an online class. This happens to be my 3rd online class and I can give you some really good tips that I have learned based off of my personal experience.

  1. Create a schedule. In my planner I need to write all assignment due dates as well as set times I plan to devote on studying and doing my course work. I have an hour break between classes on Tuesday and Thursdays that I can devote to learning that week’s material and then working on the actual assignment later that day or week.
  2. Having a proper learning space. It is really important to have an environment that I can focus in and get my work done s quickly s possible. I plan on doing my work in the library. I stay focused in there and get my worked done in the quickest amount of time. I suggest if any one else is like me, they should do the same.
  3. Eliminating all distractions. I need to make sure I turn my phone off and keep it away from me. That is honestly my biggest distraction. I know for our generation our cell phones is more like our life line and we cannot go anywhere with out it. But that could be many people’s biggest hindrance in this course.

About me ♥

Hello! I am junior here at GSU and I am an Exercise Science Major. I really enjoy working out and fitness. I hope to use my degree for either personal training or to go into physical therapy, with a focus on sports team (NFL). I would love to work with the Falcons one day although I have not completely chosen my career path yet.

Unit 1: Assignment 3 Tool Inventory

1.) To lead an online presentation I would use Microsoft PowerPoint as a visual aid for my project.  I would use this program for the simple fact of how easy it is to navigate and how nice the finish product looks. Another option would be Prezi but I find it very difficult to navigate and edit. Therefore I do not usually use it for simpler projects.

2.)To collect all my classmates’ online resources for a study guide I would use Email, The easy and most convenient to collect so much information from a large number of people would be to send the documents to eachothers’ email accounts. Ifbyou were not able to collect information from your classmates’ i would most definitely search Internet-Google to search the web for any information that i am missing. However, I would not advice using Wiki for information to study. I only say this because anyone is able to edit the information on Wiki, therefore there is a chance you could be collecting false information

3.) To create an interactive tour of Berlin I would use Prezi. Although this software can be hard to use but it delivers great results. Prezi is an interactive multimedia presentation and would perfectly display images and videos in a way to make it feel like a tour.

4.) For a collaborative research project I would use Mindmeister. Mindmeister would be a great place for the group to brainstorm and create a guideline for their project. Furthermore the group could use Wordle to share their mainb themes and put the project together.
