Project 2: Subtractive Sculpture

Mawingo

I created this subtractive sculpture from a 7-inch square of floral foam, wooden chopsticks, plaster and rigid plaster wrap, and stone-effect spray paint. My inspiration for the piece came from Makonde ebony carvings from East Africa. I wanted to emulate the emphasis placed on negative space and how this interacts with light to create powerful shadow images. One problem that I had to address along the way was the increasing top weight as I added plaster. But my classmate Rachel came to the rescue by creating a mold around the base and adding additional plaster to anchor the piece. Her technique was successful, and enabled the final work to soar safely.
