I created this self-portrait as an exploration of cubism. Some aspects of this style that I tried to capture here are multiple perspectives, a sense of dynamism, and the incorporation of everyday objects and text. Traditionally, cubists’ used a subdued palette, but I choose to work with red and green complements. The collage elements include sheet music from A Sunday in the Park with George, a distressed map of the City of Decatur, and eyes and ears taken from a photocopy of a my first painted self-portrait, shown below. I added multiple ears to represent my future work as a listener/therapist. The capital T is an icon of The New York Times recipe app, which is a key part of my meal planning, a weekly grounding ritual. Also present, but obscured by paint, is one of my many thousands of grocery lists. The hands around my face also show self-care, because that is an important aspect of helping others.
