Part 1 – Still Life Reductive Drawing

Date completed: June 2024
Medium: Vine Charcoal
For this project, our professor created a still life in class and we were supposed to draw it using the reductive drawing technique which requires us to add charcoal to a piece of paper and spread it out without adding many lines then we smudge, erase, and add more charcoal to the desired areas for the value that we want. This process was enjoyable and I had a lot of fun doing it because it helped me avoid drawing lines and focus more on the big picture.
Part 2 – Bag and Ball Reductive Drawing

Date completed: June 2024
Medium: Vine charcoal
The bag and ball project required us to draw a paper bag and a styrofoam ball using a spotlight to create shadows and highlights on the respective items. For my drawing, I flashed the spotlight directly on my ball and because the ball was completely white it reflected light on the bag which created nuances on it. This process was very helpful because through it I got to observe shadows and light which will help me in many situations when I draw later on.
Part 3 – My Favorite Things

Date completed: June 2024
Medium: Vine Charcoal
I loved creating this drawing because I got to represent five of my favorite items in my household and once I was done I was extremely satisfied with how it all looked. My items were a flower vase, a sign that says “crazy blessed”, a letter “A” plushy, a wooden piece, and my wedding album. Everything was very accurate and the proportions were on point which was something that I wanted to be true to reality.
