Title: You Are Enough
Date: 10/01/2021
Medium: Paper.
The purpose of this project was to promote compassion towards a certain group and I believe the most important and often forgotten person one must be compassionate towards is themselves. People easily come up with words to uplift others’ days but when the time comes for them to say those same uplifting words to themselves they’re speechless. I chose to focus my first collage around taking these compliments that we direct towards others and deflecting them back to ourselves because you should never stop loving you. In the second collage, I wanted to show the part of the journey to confidence that isn’t shown often. Insecurities exist and no matter how big the body positivity movement has gotten that fact still remains. I believe it is important to let those struggling to reach their point of happiness and security that we support them. You are enough, you don’t have to look like the people you see on social media. There’s beauty in individuality, everyone isn’t meant to look the same.
I took a similar approach with the way I wanted to layout the collage. I placed the words over the body to show the significance they hold. Whether negative or positive, words hold great weight. I decided to use silhouettes because I wanted a certain amount of anonymity that is symbolic of how anyone no matter their shape can feel confident or insecure. Thicker women get torn down for being confident and thinner women get torn down for being insecure but both women’s feelings are valid. I put “NO THANKS I’M NOT HUNGRY” to nail in the point that these standards society puts on women are damaging them and causing eating disorders.
