We should care about the mental health effects 13 Reasons Why has on its audience because it is “the most recent fictional portrayal of youth suicide that has had a large international impact” (Bates). Since this series has reached people globally, it is important that the content impacts their lives positively. It shouldn’t be out there if it is proven to worsen people’s condition. In addition, mental health is just as important as our physical health. It controls our emotions, thoughts, and actions. When people have good mental health, they feel better about themselves such as being happier, more motivated, wanting to do what’s best for themselves. With that being said, viewers should proceed with caution before watching fictional suicide themed medias like 13 Reasons Why. People should also go into watching these films with a open mind and to gain more knowledge and understanding of mental health, suicide, depression, and society because it is a very serious issue. The creators of these films should take into consideration what “ethical decisions” should be made even if their intention is “morally good” (Scalvini).
