Bloom’s taxonomy is a great tool to start deciphering your class learning objectives and student assessment. As a TA of an undergraduate Biology lab, I constantly have to come up with different levels of questions that help me assess my students in a better way. In class, we talk about plants hormones and how they affect the growth of plants. For the exam or quizzes, I try not to use questions that are only telling me that they can remember the material. I try to go further and ask questions that tell me they are understanding and are able to apply whatever they learned in class. For example, the question “What is the effect of auxin in plants?” is just testing if they remember the role of auxin, but if I ask them ” In 2 sentences, describe what will occur if you treat kidney beans with Auxin as compared to Abscisic acid.” In this last questions I will be testing not only their ability to remember what auxin does but also if they know how to apply it given the scenario.
