drawing of the sculpture

Date Completed: October 16, 2023

medium: Charcoal pencil, Drawing sketch pad 18 by 24, and Prismacolor Magic Rub eraser

introduction:  The goal of the project is to make a sculpture made out of recycling. Then use the Chiaroscuro method to draw the sculpture made in class. The Chiaroscuro method is another technique for adding value to your drawings to create the illusion that it’s three-dimensional.

history lesson: The Chiaroscuro method originated from the Italian Renaissance era and artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael forged it.

Austin’s Approach: With Charcoal we would lightly draw on my paper to outline the shape of the sculpture and darken in the shadows. in this project, I typically use a book under my hand so it can prevent pressure while I color my drawings. The book helps with adding in mid-range values with lights and at times it can be difficult to get the drawing darker.

One of the mistakes I made in my piece was making my shadow too dark. I tried to erase shadow but I found myself smudging too hard when I tried to correct it. Another issue I had was not adding enough detail to the table when drawing it.

Value Assignment

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: October 2, 2023

medium: Charcoal, Charcoal pencil, value sponge, Drawing sketch pad 18 by 24, eraser

introduction: This project aims to use values with different light varieties so the object can be shown adequately.  For this project, we used skulls, spears, pyramids, horses, and sea shells as our objects.

Austin’s Approach: For this project, we had to use full-range values to have the object come to life. The values ratio we would use is dark to light ratio for texture and shadowing.  while incorporating the light values to give our drawing depth to look 3D. The mistakes I made in this project were having certain areas be too dark and putting different objects in the wrong areas while making them too big.

Cabbage class assignment

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: October 2, 2023

medium: Charcoal, Charcoal pencil, value sponge, Drawing sketch pad 18 by 24, eraser

introduction: This project aims to use values with different light varieties so the object can be shown adequately.  For the assignment, I drew a piece of cabbage that was handed to us by our teacher to test my skills to create value.

Austin’s Approach: The class assignment had us use different values to have the object come to life. The values ratio we would use is dark to light ratio for texture and shadowing. I used a lot of light values to create the veins on the cabbage while adding good lighting to make it more 3D.

value homework assignment

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: October 2, 2023

medium: Charcoal, Charcoal pencil, value sponge, Drawing sketch pad 18 by 24, eraser

introduction: This project aims to use values with different light varieties so the object can be shown adequately.  For homework, I used apples, grapefruit, bananas, a knife, and a fruit basket as my objects.

Austin’s Approach: Like project or homework, had us use full-range values to have the object come to life. The values ratio we would use is dark to light ratio for texture and shadowing.  while adding lots of light values to give our drawing depth to look 3D. The mistakes I made in this assignment were having certain areas too dark and having the fruit basket look a little off when it came to having it stand upright.
