about me

Austin Phillips is an art student, studying to be an animator. he is currently an undergrad student at Georgia State University Permiter College. what makes Austin different from other artists, is that he’s had many setbacks in his life that have kept him from reaching his goal. For example, when he first began his art major wasn’t the first choice that he chose but instead, he’s done computer science. Austin didn’t pursue animation in the being because he was told that he wouldn’t make enough as an artist. but regardless of all the struggle and naysayers, he’s trying to power through to get better at his passion for art. Austin is still working hard towards getting his associate degree so he can transfer to another school.

Austin’s artwork centers around still drawings and surrealistic pieces. he tries to find realism and fantasy so he can find a middle ground to balance everything out.

Project 6 Imaginative

third drawing:

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: Dec 6, 2023

medium: stone henge paper, charcoal, Charcoal pencil, sponge, and conte crayon

Introduction: The goal of Project 6 is centered around the different Elements of Art Structure. The  Structure comprises visual variables we need to communicate or express in our project. The variables we need to use are lines, shapes, values, and textures.

Artist approach: For project 6, I wanted to create an abstract art piece but at The same time had people in that made it stand out. I went for a more dangerous and dark fantasy feeling when I did both pieces. before we did our drawing the whole class had to be blindfolded to make scribbles and later see what shapes we could create. The mistake I made being blindfolded was not finding or remembering where I put my charcoal every time I would lay it down. After we did the blindfold we had to then erase and reapply textures to see what kind of shapes that I could get. l then create lots of dark shadowing while adding mid-range value to create a nice balance and blend. Then I went with the orange conte crayon to add lighting to my object. I then added my white conte crayon to create high-light textures around the darker spaces of the object so it could to life.

Project 5: Space

Library point of view:

The Fine arts building point of view:

Watercolor Painting of the classroom:

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date complete: Nov 27, 2023

medium:

introduction: Project 5 required us to understand the linear perspective and atmospheric perspective to draw an object and have it meet a singular point. Then we use linear perspective knowledge to go on and make a two-perspective drawing. The materials we would use for Project 5 are leaded pencils and 18 X 24 sketchbook paper to draw the library to get the gist of what we’re doing. Then we used black magic ink and Bristol paper for our watercolor painting of the classroom.

project 4

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: Nov 6, 2023

medium 1: crow quill pen and Higgins Black magic ink

medium 2: tone paper and conte crayon

medium 3: Drawing Book paper 18 x 24 and Conte Crayon

introduction:

Project 4 strives to use hatching, cross-hatching, and stippling techniques to draw bell peppers with a crow quill pin. For this project, it is required for us to use black magic ink because it’s washable and way more practical for our assignment. For part B of project 4, we used tone paper and Conte Crayon to draw and create values in our skull. The conte crayon is used to create shadow and or lighting for the skull so we can accurately see it. Then For Part C, we used the same values and Materials that was done in Part B to do our selfportrait. The only diffrernce was that there was a type of paper that the rest of the class used but I ended up using my Sketch pad paper instead to do my portrait.

Recycled Sculpture Drawing

drawing of the sculpture

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: October 16, 2023

medium: Charcoal pencil, Drawing sketch pad 18 by 24, and Prismacolor Magic Rub eraser

introduction:  The goal of the project is to make a sculpture made out of recycling. Then use the Chiaroscuro method to draw the sculpture made in class. The Chiaroscuro method is another technique for adding value to your drawings to create the illusion that it’s three-dimensional.

history lesson: The Chiaroscuro method originated from the Italian Renaissance era and artists like Leonardo Da Vinci and Raphael forged it.

Austin’s Approach: With Charcoal we would lightly draw on my paper to outline the shape of the sculpture and darken in the shadows. in this project, I typically use a book under my hand so it can prevent pressure while I color my drawings. The book helps with adding in mid-range values with lights and at times it can be difficult to get the drawing darker.

One of the mistakes I made in my piece was making my shadow too dark. I tried to erase shadow but I found myself smudging too hard when I tried to correct it. Another issue I had was not adding enough detail to the table when drawing it.

Value Assignment

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: October 2, 2023

medium: Charcoal, Charcoal pencil, value sponge, Drawing sketch pad 18 by 24, eraser

introduction: This project aims to use values with different light varieties so the object can be shown adequately.  For this project, we used skulls, spears, pyramids, horses, and sea shells as our objects.

Austin’s Approach: For this project, we had to use full-range values to have the object come to life. The values ratio we would use is dark to light ratio for texture and shadowing.  while incorporating the light values to give our drawing depth to look 3D. The mistakes I made in this project were having certain areas be too dark and putting different objects in the wrong areas while making them too big.

Cabbage class assignment

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: October 2, 2023

medium: Charcoal, Charcoal pencil, value sponge, Drawing sketch pad 18 by 24, eraser

introduction: This project aims to use values with different light varieties so the object can be shown adequately.  For the assignment, I drew a piece of cabbage that was handed to us by our teacher to test my skills to create value.

Austin’s Approach: The class assignment had us use different values to have the object come to life. The values ratio we would use is dark to light ratio for texture and shadowing. I used a lot of light values to create the veins on the cabbage while adding good lighting to make it more 3D.

value homework assignment

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date Completed: October 2, 2023

medium: Charcoal, Charcoal pencil, value sponge, Drawing sketch pad 18 by 24, eraser

introduction: This project aims to use values with different light varieties so the object can be shown adequately.  For homework, I used apples, grapefruit, bananas, a knife, and a fruit basket as my objects.

Austin’s Approach: Like project or homework, had us use full-range values to have the object come to life. The values ratio we would use is dark to light ratio for texture and shadowing.  while adding lots of light values to give our drawing depth to look 3D. The mistakes I made in this assignment were having certain areas too dark and having the fruit basket look a little off when it came to having it stand upright.

Sculpture portrait

Date: Dec 2, 2024

Medium: Clay and Ceramics tool kit

Statement:

This project aimed to make a self-portrait sculpture using proper techniques, such as slick and score or smoothing. I started my project by creating the shape of myself out of clay. I didn’t use any tissue or aluminum foil to make the shape of me. I created my shape by rolling the clay like dough and forming it into a base for my neck and a ball of my head. Later, I added more clay to make my neck longer since it looked smaller. I used the slick and score technique to add specific parts like my ears or nose whenever I needed more clay. Then, I would smooth parts of the sculptor with water that had cracks in them so it wouldn’t hurt my design too much.

I also added more clay to make my head’s size thicker than usual; in this project, I even had to use another method called patience. Finding the patience was difficult because I had to redo the nose and ears again whenever it would mess up when I got home. Learning this technique helped me because it improved my project in some messy regions.

Robot sculpture

Date: Oct 23, 2024

Medium: cardboard, water bottles, tissue rolls, hard wire, two different kinds of toothpicks, hot glue, and two different fabrics

Statement:

This project aims to create an art piece that uses multiple objects to make a strong periodic pattern. In this case, I created a small life-size robot that displays this pattern with toothpicks and chair fabric. I made my robot from water bottles and cardboard to make the torso and legs. I used hot glue to keep the water bottles and tissue roll attached to the cardboard. As I created the upper torso, I cut some cardboard, stacked them together, and hot-glued them at the very top where the shoulders would be. I created two stacks on each side of the robot to put the hard wire through them to make the arms. Then, I cut the bottles and put the wire through to create the bulk of the arm. I later created the hands from cardboard and attached them to the arms.

After I was finished, I made the head out of cardboard and the eye out of a plastic eye. Then, I wrapped and hot-glued two different pieces of fabric onto the robot. I used leftover green fabric for the robot’s top portion and the badge Fabric for the bottom. I finally hot-glued the toothpicks on the stomach and butt parts of the robot. I created an antenna by using a broken picture frame molding and glued it to the side of my robot’s head.

Abstract sculpture

Date: Oct 2, 2024

Medium: wire, floral foam block, plaster, acrylic paint, and X-Acto blade

Statements:

The objective of this project was to grasp an understanding of form in space by creating an abstract sculpture out of a floral foam block. I started by carving circles out of my foam with my X-Acto blade. Then, I shed the excess pieces to make the foam more round or flat so it could form into the shapes that I wanted. After I was finished, I carved the rest of the block so the whole piece would fit the holder that was used to display the art piece.

I found some wire in class, and I used to attach it to the holder’s center so my shapes could go on. I later carved out a hole in my unfished art piece so one of my shapes attached to wire could fit right through. Next, I added plaster to the whole art piece, which was created using water to smooth it out. Then, I finally painted everything with blue and purple acrylic paint and waited until it dried.

Egg Drop project (3D Design)

Date: Sep 11, 2024

Medium (material): two different kinds of tooth picks, hot glue, and bottles caps

Statement:

The goal for the egg drop project was to build a practical sculpture that would hold an egg while we dropped it from an elevated height. For my design, I made a car with a parachute holding it. I couldn’t find Michaels’s toothpicks, so I used wooden Creatology Pics to create my sculpture instead. Then, I used hot glue to make the car’s chassis, body, and parachute. I started by making my holder for the egg first; originally, I wasn’t planning to make that part into a parachute. I made the holder into a parachute anyway because my car was too small.

As soon as I was done making the chassis, I wasn’t sure which way I wanted the hood or the trunk of the car to go. It was challenging to decide which way I wanted the front to go because the gaps I made for the wheels to go were too close apart. To add insult to injury, I made the chassis too small, so I knew I needed to make my body smaller, too. I made my car into a Volkswagen Beetle because I made my chassis small.

drawing of space and short stories

Name: Austin Phillips

date: April 25, 2024

medium: Toned paper, bristol paper, watercolor poster paper, pencils, colored pencils, black magic ink, crow quill pin, paintbrush, and water

The goal of Project 3 is to develop scenes of real-life places with two or three-point perspectives. The senses in Project 3 will then tie into the sequential narrative for Project 4. Then, Project  4 aims to use different media like watercolor, stippling, hatching, and cross-hatching that we’ve done in class. We will use this media to create a story about our heroes. The stories in Project 4 will all have three parts: intro, rising action, and climax.

process: In Project 3, I used toned paper to draw the three different sceneries with a pencil. I added color depth to my art piece by tracing over my drawing with a brown color pencil. However, I had to redo part of it again because everyone used different mediums, including toned paper. I redid the skylift and my friend’s bathroom using the big watercolor paper and the bristol paper with ink and coloring pencils. In Project 4, I made short stories in comic book form using panels while incorporating the same sceneries from Project 3. I drew everything with a pencil and then inked the story with Black Magic ink. I eventually added watercolor to get a sense of value and texture. I Learned how to make stories in comic book form while also knowing how to use text boxes.

Project 2 /Intro studio

Name: Austin Phillips

Date: March 21, 2024

Medium:  Photoshop, Tabloid 11 x 17, Bristol Paper 9 x 12, printer paper, Magine paper, glue

introduction: Project two’s Objective was to create a public announcement piece with magazine paper and printout paper collaged onto 9 X 12 or 11 X 14 paper. But I ended up using the 9X12 Bristol paper to do my piece. Once the class had done the collage, we used Adobe Photoshop to add our quotes. The class also used Adobe PhotoShop to add the links that support our Service announcement.

Project 1 /Intro studio

Name of Artist: Austin Phillips

Date complete:

Medium: air dry clay, cardborad, hot glue, aluminum foil, wire, Acrylic craft paint Bold Brights paint, paper sock, baloon, and string

Introduction: The goal for project one was to recreate an existing book so we can show the meaning behind the story. I wanted to use Doctor Seus’s book “Oh The Places You Can Go.” I used it because it is a childhood book, and I wanted to explore the themes in the story and remake them. I used two pages from the book: the hot air balloon crashing into the tree and the boy in the yellow pajamas petting a green bear.
