In this project, we were to create an “armor” from found objects, art materials, and rigid wrap that protected against a social ill, through a headpiece, handheld object, and garment. I approached this project eagerly. I was very passionate about the social ill. I started by sketching my armor; then, I started gathering materials. After gathering materials, I just let my sketch direct me and deviated when I felt the need to do so. I failed to attach encouraging words from the top of my headdress, but I found a much more beautiful way through hanging them from the bottom. I learned how to properly and improperly use spray paint. I also learned the power of color to bring an even deeper meaning to a deep topic. After watching how another fellow student approached the project, I learned that every piece of my work needs to support the piece’s overall message.
I believe the biggest concept for this assignment was using art/various materials to speak to and effect social change. I think my work shows that I was aiming for this objective in my piece. I think I gained spray painting skills and achieved quality work by considering color, emphasis, and form. I think my final work shows an openness to trying non-artistic materials and a willingness to change how I add pieces when my initial process fails.
I’ve never made an assemblage/costume piece like this before. Again, this is definitely an achievement I can add to my repertoire of techniques. I also learned more about this kind of art by researching Nick Cave.
