3 Web Design Tips

1) Web finding has 4 components :

  1. Orientation: Where am I am right now?
  2. Route decisions: Can I find the way to where I want to go?
  3. Mental mapping: Are my experiences consistent and understandable enough to know where I’ve been and to predict where I should go next?
  4. Closure: Can I recognize that I have arrived in the right place?

2)Every web page needs:

  • An informative title (which also becomes the text of any bookmark to the page)
  • The creator’s identity (author or institution)
  • A creation or revision date
  • A copyright statement, Creative Commons statement, or other statement of ownership to protect your intellectual property rights
  • At least one link to a local home page or menu page, in a consistent location on all pages
  • The home page url

3)Folder tabs are ideal when your site has relatively few major categories

3 Things I Learned About Citations

1) The reason we have different types of citations is because different fields of study have different standards for how to present and document citations.

2) I knew there were different type of citation styles, but I wasn’t really familiar of AMA and Turabian format.

3) AMA format is used for medicine, health, and biological sciences. Turbian is used as a general-subject citation style.

2 useful Apps for college students

Unit 2 Assignment 1

For topic I chose second-hand smoking because that was the first thing that came to mind and also I don’t like smoking because of how bad it is for the body. The top 3 search engines I used was Google, Bing, and Yahoo Search. The 3 meta search engines I used was iBoogie, DogPile, and DuckDuckGo. For the top 3 search engines, all of them seemed to show the same search results, but in different orders. Bing doesn’t have that many ads compared to Yahoo and Google. The meta search engines had the exact search results. I would say meta search engines are different compared to the top search engines because google, bing, yahoo, etc. are more well known. All of the search engines are helpful when searching specific topics, but to narrow down to the best results, it all depends on what you type to search.

2) Make a schedule and stick with it

This will help balance out school with other activities like work, being in an organization, etc.

3) Be aware of upcoming assignments

Being aware of all upcoming deadlines will help be ahead of the game and never fall behind

Assignment 3: Tool Inventory

Task 1) You have to lead an online presentation on the contents of your history term paper.

-Tools: PowerPoint, Prezi, World Wide Web

-Reason: PowerPoint and Prezi can help present the information in a organized way that’s easy to follow. The World Wide Web is used to search information to gather for the history paper.

Task 2) The final exam for your economics course is coming up, and you need to collect all of your (and hopefully your classmates’) online resources for a study guide.

-Tools: Email, Instant messaging (IM)

-Reason: Email is a way to electronically send information to collaborate everyone’s resources for a study guide and instant messaging (IM) is a way for all of the classmates to communicate about gathering all resources.

Task 3) You need to create an interactive tour of Berlin as an assignment for your study abroad program.

-Tools: PowerPoint, Prezi, Video-Sharing sites

-Reason: Powerpoint and Prezi can be used to organize pictures to present an interactive tour. Video-sharing sites can be used as support to give the audience another visual look of the tour.

Task 4) You and a group of your classmates have been asked to do a collaborative research project on how Facebook has affected the social habits of young adults.

-Tools: Facebook, World Wide Web, Email, Instant messaging (IM), PowerPoint, Prezi

-Reason: Facebook and the World Wide Web can be used as a source to get information for the project. Email can be used for all classmates to send research to each other to help collaborate everything into the project. PowerPoint and Prezi are used to give a visual for the audience to follow as the project is being presented.
