Artist Statement – Reflection/Analysis
In my Project 2, Creepy Crawly, I created the insect SP-624 “Venomflare.” My insect was a mixture of a Asian Forest Scorpian, Black Widow, and Chalcosoma. The sculpture was a mixture of metal wire of the sizes of .041 and .023. Black spray paint was used in the end to finalize the insect with an intimidating look.
My process of my sculpture was by making blueprints for the body base, 8 legs, 2 claws, and tail. Once each piece was attached, the seperate body parts were finally attached. Wire was added in areas that needed more stability. After the base of the insect was complete, it was spray painted in a gloss black spray paint, making the insect appear more bolder. After the insect was spray painted, the red beads were added at the end giving it eyes and the red hourglass the Black Widow has on it’s back.
My sculpture was assessed during the critique as the class observed it as I explained it’s information. As the critique was in session, I enjoyed explaining the information of “Venomflare.” As everyone critiqued the insect I listened to their perspectives and opinions. Going over my insect I also like that it seemed larger in size, giving it an intimidating view. I enjoyed the feedback I received during the critique for my insect.
From this project, I will take the idea of sculpting with wire more seriously next time and go further out of my comfort zone. I would like to do another sculpture and add more wire. I would also enjoy to learn more complex ways to maneuver the metal wire.
