Artist Statement – Reflection/Analysis:

For my Project 1, 8 Ways of Looking at a Piece of Paper, I created 8 sculptures that resemble make up products. Each one was made very detailed and complex with one singular piece of paper for each sculpture. They are very fragile and intricate but contain a well balanced weight to each one, making them unique. Some of the sculptures were inspired by the brands Ellen Tracy, Prosa, Pour Femme, Maybelline, NYX, and TRESemme. These sculptures were created for my brand DREA.X. Each sculpture has a very unique aspect, some of them can open, one rattles, displaying as if they were actual makeup products that can be used. The sculptures are a Perfume, Lipstick, Mascara, Foundation, Primer, Mirror Compact, Makeup Brush, and Hairspray. Each sculpture has its own description, ingredients, and application method.

Each sculpture was created with a single piece of paper for each one. UHU Magic Blue Glue Stick was used to glue each piece of paper together, along with a bit of Gorilla Gel Glue. Every sculpture was folded in shapes to create each format throughout the process. Casting wasn’t used in the process due to an accident, involving my cats destroying the castings I created. Eventually, I was able to create each piece in the same format of cutting and glueing together.

My work was being assessed as a form of looking at makeup products designed in paper sculptures. During the critique I wanted the class to look and understand the concept I had include for my project. The sculptures were made precisely to look exactly like the products in their form. I did struggle sticking some of the paper to get certain formats and shapes, but it succeeded in the end. As the class went over my project in the critique, I enjoyed their feedback and listened.

In this project, I will take from it as a new experience to learn other ways for me to make more paper sculptures, using one singular piece of paper for each. I really enjoyed my progress in this project while making my sculptures and I would consider doing it again. With this new technique, I want to continue this format and help others understand this concept as well.
