Negative Space

Project #1 (Negative Space)

Date: February 2024

Materials: Charcoal Pencils (2B) (4B) (6B)

Statement: I used negative and positive space in my drawing by using my kitchen sink. Most of the bottles I used were cleaning materials. Adding the value was easy to do, but it was difficult preventing it from smudging from the charcoal.

Reflection and Analysis:

Describe how you used Positive and Negative Space in Project #1?
I used negative and positive space in my drawing by using my kitchen sink. Most of the bottles I used were cleaning materials. The pipes underneath also helped with creating the negative space behind them. The pipes intersected the most.

What was the most challenging aspect of this project? The most challenging aspect of this project was adding the value to the drawing. Sketching it was easy for me, but once I added the value I struggled. For my value I used charcoal pencils such as a 2B, 4B, and 6B. It grew challenging as I filled in the value since it’s charcoal, I was afraid of it smudging.

Does your drawing have a focal point? (Where does your eye go first in the drawing?) My drawing doe’s have a focal point. My eyes look directly at the pipe first, it creates a J shaped letter and most of the small pipes that intersect with it makes it stand out.

What aspects of your drawing could use improvement? One way I could’ve improve my drawing, would be the distance of the bottles. Most likely putting one farther in the back to make it show completely, rather than all the bottles being placed directly next to each other.

What aspects of your drawing do you think are the most successful? The aspects of my drawing that I think are successful is that it looks neat and clean even with a few smudges, and that all the positive objects all connect together and make different shapes.
