Chapter 7: Page Design

Visual Design
Within this chapter, they outline the purposes and elements that should be taken into account when creating your visuals. If done well, users should be able easily navigate pages.

Sidebar: Visual Design Principles
This chapter describes the most important elements of web page design based on research. One should focus on proximity, similarity, continuity, closure, figure-ground relationships, uniform connectedness, and the 1+1=3 effect.

Page Framework
Flexible pages are essential for creating pages as they can adapt across various media platforms of users.

Page Width and Line Length
Ideal line length is based on human eye physiology, meaning universal usability is necessary to ensure users can change the page to suit their needs. Length should be balanced based on the following factors: the relation between page and screen size, content, whether it is browser-based or has potential for print or download, and bandwidth.

Design Grids for Web Pages
A web page design should be consistent and balanced for users to feel confident using the page. The chapter showcases the different types of grids and templates that could be potentially used based on a creator’s desired results.

My Response
A lot of this chapter and others we have read so far is the type of research they use to determine how best to design web pages for users. I never considered the research and detail that goes into making the pages I browse. Even further, I just realized that the size adaption of pages is not magic; much thought goes into adapting pages. It made me think of how I can read easily and adjust my pages on my Kindle and Kindle app, different devices, but my experience remains the same with both due to how they were set up.
