An art series by Abigail Brown

This project stretches the student’s imagination by having them make eight different sculptures, each only consisting of one sheet of blank paper. After creating the pieces, the student must photograph and print them out to be put in a sketchbook spread that talks about the process of creating the work.

This spread dives deep into the femininity of smoking cigarettes. On the left of the page, I made an ashtray and cigarettes’ out of one sheet of paper and, on the other side, I made a hand holding a cigarette out of another sheet of paper. Together the create a since of feminine power and mystery.

In this sketchbook spread, I wanted to focus on the juxtaposition of two elements, the sun and the moon.
I stretched the paper as far as I could with these sculptures. The page on the left focuses on a group of mushrooms that I made all with one sheet of paper, and likewise for the flowers on the right.
This is the spread from above, however I flipped the pages I had taped down. I wanted this to be like an informational pamphlet on nature.
For my last two projects, I wanted to focus on smoke again but this time in a different aspect. The piece on the left is an incense tray and the piece on the right is a piece of paper with incense burn marks in it.
