The Zoo Atlanta is a zoological center in Atlanta Georgia that is home to many different exotic animals. This zoo began in 1886 when the city was given a spotted fawn to start an animal collection and has many types of birds, mammals, amphibians, and reptiles. The first donations  of exotic animals in 1889 were from a businessman, George V. Gress, who purchased a defunct circus and gave the animals to the city. With its lake, boathouse, trails, historic fort, and zoo, Grant Park has been deemed the “most ambitious city play-ground in the South” in 1895 by Harper’s New Monthly Magazine. In 1935 the zoo worked to raise money to expand and improve to accomidate for animals from the private zoo of Asa Candler Jr., the son of the founder of Coca-Cola Asa Candler. The most famous resident of the Zoo Atlanta was the lowland gorila Willie B. Science, research, and conservation were incorperated into the zoo in the 1960’s. In September of 2006 two giant pandas female Lun Lun and male Yang Yang, were loaned to Zoo Atlanta from the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding in China. The two soon had a female cub. The cubs name was Mei Lan, meaning “Atlanta Beauty.”
