Scholl and Gulwadi explain at the beginning that colleges in the 21st century face challenges in providing good learning spaces for an evolving society. People expect a college campus to “look different than other places” (p.2). The campus as a whole must encompass a holistic learning experience (p.2). Radloff says that “only one-fifth of a students time is spent in the classroom…” then goes on to say that the campus as a whole is a key factor of the learning process. The authors speak on fatigue and how technology can affect the students attention. The article defines the word “campus” as deriving from the Latin word “field”. The first college grounds like Princeton University in the 1770’s,were wooded and ruraly located to create an ideal community secluded from city distractions, but nonetheless a large community (p.4). At the end of the article the authors conclude by stating that the open spaced rural campuses are better holistic learning environments because of their “educational values” (p.19).
