A Passage to India

Characterization

I found, A Passage to India, very moving. It pleasantly surprised me through Adela’s character arc. She is supposed to be married to Ronny, Mrs. Moore’s son, but she questions this unity the longer she is in India. I find the Marabar caves very seducing and enticing because caves are known to be these foreign landforms that are home to the unknown. Yet, Aziz, Adela, Mrs. Moore and the tour guides travel to these alien like caves, not all of them making it beyond the depths of darkness, loneliness and solitude. The unwelcome visitors disturb the caves aura, causing an unsettling sounds and vibrations that lead Adela to come to a realization that she doesn’t want to marry Ronny. Adela doesn’t want anyone, she wants to be alone like the depths of the caves, attached to nothing.
