Summary-

Albany State is a University in Albany, Georgia. The university offers two different campuses called Cairo and Cordele Campus.  Albany State offers 40 undergraduate degrees and 29 majors to students from all kinds of backgrounds. Their tuition is very affordable, with in sate being around 6k and out of state around 16k. Their acceptance rate is 73% (2020) with a 25.1 % graduation rate. The way that Albany State persuade students through their website is by using APARTSARC audience and Imaging ideal readers.

Analytic-

The APARTSARC that Albany State University website uses is Audience and Imagining ideal readers. Albany State University does not target one specific audience but multiple students from all backgrounds. Albany has ideal readers that they try to reach. When a student first opens the website, it is very invite full. The website also shows many careers option paths.

The audience that Albany is trying to reach is students with low-income families, students that work, and students of color, and students from any background.  This information can be found under the about home page. “As a historically black institution and led by a highly-diverse faculty and staff, Albany State University will embrace diversity in all its forms – including age, gender identity, race and ethnicity, country of origin, religion, ability level, sexual orientation, and veteran status – and seek to foster a similar acceptance and celebration of that diversity.”     (Albany State University, About-Embrace Diversity). Another type of audience that Albany website reaches out to are students from different finical levels. The school is for students that may have to work and that may not be so well in school. “Albany State University will promote student success for all by welcoming students from varying levels of academic preparation, keeping costs low, offering flexible class times and instructional modalities, and pairing high student expectations with exceptional mentoring, advising, and tutoring.” (Albany State University, about page- Expand access to higher education).

After Albany website states it affordability and diversity to students from multiple backgrounds it moves on to student life. The student life page has many categories about a student’s life while attending the school. From student engagement, housing, Greek life and so much more.

The large rhetorical strategies that Albany website uses is Imagining Ideal Readers. The school website does not want one specific audience/ type of students. The school wants students from all backgrounds. No matter the student age, race, ethnicity, or money. The school website also shows students that different educational levels are welcomed. On the academic page under learning center, it shows that the school offers help academically. “The ASU Centers for Academic Excellence are designed to assist students in reaching their fullest potential by offering a comprehensive array of support services, programs and pedagogical approaches that address students’ learning needs.” (Albany State University, Academic- learning center page). The school wants to help all students so that every student can gradate.

The Imagining Ideal Readers that the school wants are students perusing different career choses. The website lists all kids of degrees, majors, and manors that a student may want to follow. Having degree levels form one year study, associates, career associate, bachelors, and masters.

Albany State University website used different styles to persuade students to attend the school. One of the APARTSARC that was used is audience. The school’s website was meant to draw students of all types. The Large rhetorical style that was used was Imagining Ideal Readers. After Albany State caught students eye the website showed students why Albany state University may be the school for them.

Response-

I would attend Albany state university. The tuition is very affordable. The school also is not that far, but it is far enough for me to have to live on campus. I believe that that is good because it does give me freedom wise allowing me to drive back home anytime. I like the school diversity. Its kinds of remind me of high school just with other races but majority black. I also play soccer and the women’s soccer team is a good division two team. They have a good Bachelor of Science major in biology pre-med track that good.

Princeton University

Summary

Princeton University is one of the eight original Ivy League schools in the United States, which means it is one of the country’s most “sought-after” and prestigious institutions. To keep up this image, Princeton admires students who value their academic future and typically accept those with a grade point average of 3.9 or higher. Princeton makes it clear that ambitious students who are seeking top-of-the-line teaching should go here as they openly take pride in hiring the best of the best when it comes to professors.

Analysis

When it comes to convincing students to attend their campus, Princeton University makes an effort to emphasize how dominant their teaching faculty is. In fact, if one were to visit the homepage of Princeton University’s website, they’d notice it says very little about the students’ achievements but, instead, highlights its reputable staff members. They accomplish this by utilizing an admirable yet comforting tone. For instance, as of March 2022, the top story on Princeton’s website is about a “full-time therapy dog” named Coach. According to the home page, Coach’s job is to make people feel better by allowing them to do things such as pet her, rub her belly or even shake her paw (Princeton University, 2022, Home Page). This warming synopsis serves a bigger purpose, however. By clicking on this story while you may learn a little more about Coach, it catches your attention enough to slyly allow Princeton University to then praise their University Health Services Department. They do so by claiming that they are “committed to continue caring for your healthcare needs” (Princeton University, 2022, University Health Services). This subconsciously makes an impression on the aspiring student that they ‘care’ and that the staff is highly invested in their student’s mental health.

Although Princeton does not blatantly describe or say what type of students they are trying to attract, their commendable tone when it comes to promoting staff members is a deliberate attempt to attract their target audience. Another story that is being promoted heavily on Princeton’s home page is about two of their professors receiving the BBVA Frontiers of Knowledge Award. This award is handed out annually to professors who exemplify “fundamental contributions of scientific knowledge, technology, humanities, and artistic creation,” on a national level (OFA, 1). Princeton uses this achievement as a humblebrag that simultaneously praises the professors and shows off its high level of teaching compared to other universities. This leaves the aspiring student with the implication that they should go here if they’re seeking to learn from some of the “best professors in the nation,” as those are the only people who receive such awards (OFA, 1).

However, if a student expects to get into Princeton University with any GPA, they’re mistaken. Princeton doesn’t openly report on one’s chances of getting into the university because it’d run away most students from even applying.  While the actual website does not say much about its academic requirements, one must keep in mind Princeton is an Ivy League school meaning it is incredibly competitive. In fact, Princeton is reported to have an acceptance rate of 5.6%, and any students who would like to go here are required to have a GPA as low as 3.89 (CollegeSimply). Therefore, while Princeton flaunts its professors and staff members religiously, it is such a notoriously prestigious school. Students usually do not look towards applying here unless they know they may have a chance. Their ideal student is painted out to be very studious and serious about their academic success, so they feel it is necessary to highlight their professors because this is what they’d want. This type of student would only enjoy the best for themselves by learning from the best.

Response

If nothing was preventing me from doing so, I feel like I’d enjoy attending Princeton University. The amount of dedication they put into hiring the best of the best professors in all subjects really highlights how much they care about their students’ success. Furthermore, Princeton holds one of the highest graduation rates of Ivy League schools, with 97.3% of its students graduating as of 2021 (College Scorecard). I feel like most of the students here tend to graduate because they feel like they belong. Belonging, for me, is a big part of me being successful. Sometimes, when you’re around a group of people you can’t relate to, you may feel outcasted or uncomfortable, but that’d be difficult at Princeton. Considering Princeton takes tons of pride in its students when it comes to selecting them, I feel like there are such strict criteria which they’re looking for that it’d be hard not to fit in with others in some form or fashion. If I am surrounded by people who put in as much effort as me when it comes to school, I’d be comfortable doing what I’d have to get done outside of school before I partake in any other activities. Although I do not give in to peer pressure, even the tension of being pressured is enough for me to be uncomfortable with what I’m trying to achieve.

Central Michigan University

Ismael Ouessiegnon
Engl 1102 Section 322–Weaver
MA3 Analysis
Date Due: Wed 3/9/2022
Iouessiegnon1@gsu.edu

Summary:
At Central Michigan University website, they show that they want students to live meaningful and productive lives with careers that they feel show what they can do for society. To do that, the people at CMU hold certain values to help foster student knowledge and education. The website uses some strategies to persuade the reader to have the confidence to either go to or recommend the university to others, but two of the strategies that will be gone over in this essay are Assumptions and Case Studies.

Analysis:
When people first come to the first page, the first assumption that Central Michigan University makes is that the student will find the field that they want to pursue. Scrolling down to the ‘Find Your Program’ section, it reads that CMU has many programs their readers can search for and that they can “find [their] perfect fit here”, showing confidence in the number of their fields and telling the reader that they’ll find something they have an interest in (CMU, home page). Another thing that reinforced the previous statement is on the about page. Upon getting onto the page, most people first see a text box titled ‘About CMU’. The text talks about the great number of programs, division teams, and campus labs at CMU, assuming that the reader is asking themselves what they can do at CMU when they should be asking what they can’t do (CMU, about page). The ideals about the student and their programs continue on their Community page. This page is brimming with reassurances about this university, “If [the student doesn’t] know what [they] want to do, that’s OK. It’s not going to stop [the student] from succeeding” (Quinton Mitchell, Our Community page). They show that they know that students might not know what they want to do or even if the student can’t be on campus, CMU is there for them. The student can still be sure that they can use CMU’s resources to succeed and become the person they want and were meant to be (CMU, Our Community page).
Maybe readers might not resonate with the assumptions that the website makes. In that situation, Central Michigan University uses many other inviting things that make a person want to choose them as their college of choice, such as a case study. A case study is a bundle of research on a certain topic, and the topic here is how CMU leads their students to success and how their students feel about CMU. They have plenty of stories about their students that make people think about their choice of if this is the right place for their audience. These stories readers can find on the first page of the CMU website titled Fired Up And Focused. The first story in the series is about a student majoring in Sports Management, Daniel Folkert. Almost done with his first semester and after his outstanding ticket sales, Daniel Folkert now has no doubts about majoring in sports management. The availability of former successful students at CMU has caused Folkert to push himself to the best of his abilities. Folkert supports this by saying, “When you’re doing group projects that you can see happening for real with an NBA, NFL or MLB team, it makes you have to be comfortable leading a team”(Folkert, Fired Up And Focused page). CMU uses this story to point out how their programs have students using real experience to support them and their passion. The second story is about a Biology student researcher named Safiyah Teran-Sari Ali. The story details how Safiyah Ali was offered a program that aids first-generation students like her in getting their Ph.D. Ali was also thankful for her professor Dr. Xantha Karp and her help with Name’s research project on genetics. At the end of the biography, Ali says that “The community here is built so you can encourage students from different backgrounds no matter their gender, race, ethnicity or sexuality”(Ali, Fired Up And Focused page). This supports that CMU is a place where many types of people can find their success no matter their identity.

Response:
Now that we discuss how CMU makes you think about its college, I wanted to discuss what I think about the college and what challenges I would have to face if I considered going to it. I think if I had the choice of going to CMU, I believe I would, provided if we don’t have extra factors to consider. It seems like a good university to go to and the campus looks nice. If I lived in Michigan, it would definitely be a good choice. But look at those extra factors, I don’t think I would want to on the basic fact alone that it’s not in Georgia. I don’t want the cost to be too much for my family and I would like to stay with them for now rather than live on campus. Speaking of costs, the tuition at CMU is more than the tuition at GSU. I already sort of worry about how I’m going to pay my debt when I graduate, I don’t want to get more worried. So based on the location and costs, I don’t think it’s realistic that I can go and I’m much more comfortable and at peace with my choice here at GSU anyway but it is a nice thought to think about.

Duke University (Revised

Summary
When curious students enter the website, they are greeted by pictures of the lush and beautiful scenery of the college campus. Duke University wants new students to enroll, whether it is undergraduates or transfer students. Duke is seeking “people of action,” they’re looking for people who want to make real change and who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo. Through using purpose, the author informs these students what life would be like if they enrolled, and through using the ideal reader the author reaches out to these new students.

Analysis

The author’s purpose is to get new students to enroll and feel welcome at Duke University. By using the website, they reach out to new students by informing them of what life would be like if they enrolled. They want new students to feel at home and welcome. They want readers to wonder if this life is for me? When they first enter the website, they are greeted by bold words over a picture of the Duke campus saying, “This is Duke.” The author does this to give the reader a glimpse and a view of what’s happening at Duke. The author wants the reader to be intrigued and curious about the campus. By highlighting events that are happening today, the reader will be curious enough to continue looking through the website. As they scroll, they will discover Duke’s calendar of “events to come” allowing them to click, set a reminder and get an overview of the event and location so they can decide whether they’ll go or not. The author continues to welcome the reader and persuade them to join, by highlighting social media posts from people’s honest opinions of the college on Twitter on “#Duke Social.” By doing this the author uses real opinions and testimonies about the college to show readers that other people love and think they should join the college, too. As they find their way through the easy-to-navigate tabs, they’ll find themselves on the admission page. From there the authors grab their attention again with a big bright phrase asking the reader to imagine “how many lives can you live in four years?” By questioning the reader, the author gets them to think about the many ways they can live their new lives on campus. As one student put it “The Duke experience is all-encompassing, interactive, and vibrant. There’s an element of camaraderie here that doesn’t exist anywhere else.”(Edward Coles, Admissions”). This quote supports the author’s purpose by telling new students that life at Duke is a more unique experience than anywhere else and that these are words from a student who just graduated last year. Duke has numerous amounts of students and staff on campus, with Duke having an 8:1 ratio of students to staff and over 6,542 students to meet and become comrades with. The author knows moving somewhere new and making new friends is tough, so they highlight campus life by phrasing “Community foundation”(Duke Campus life). By doing this they continue to persuade the readers by explaining to them how all first-year students will live together and eat together so they will be able to forge a friendship as well as talk to others who might be experiencing the same feelings that they are going through.

Another strategy used by the author is the large rhetorical strategy, imagining the ideal reader. The ideal reader is not necessarily the best; it’s the reader, but those who would grasp the idea the author is telling. The author goes about doing this by highlighting Duke’s academic data, the kind of things students can do off and on campus to make a difference, and the kind of students Duke is searching for. The author highlights Duke’s academic data by informing readers about the different and numerous combinations of fifty-three majors, fifty-two minors, and twenty-three certificates they can earn through Duke with 437,989 combinations of the three. Duke offers new students the option to build the academic life they want and gives them access to advanced learning centers, one-on-one with their professors at an 8:1 ratio, meaning there’s always someone they can talk to for help. The authors highlight Duke’s research opportunity and the $800,000,000 spent on research funding, which tells readers, that there are many things they can research and discover without a fair amount of funding. The author also informs the reader about the many ways they can make a real-world difference off-campus by informing them about the 1.6 million hours Duke students have volunteered through programs like Duke Engage or the opportunity to make their degree program with Program II. This shows the reader that’s looking to get involved with programs to make a difference in the world, that they’re available for them to sign up and start making a difference as soon as they join. Lastly, the author uses imaging the ideal reader by quoting the Dean of undergraduates admission by stating, “We look for students who operate at the intersection of imagination and impact—students who are unafraid to undertake things that are messy, complex, and outside of their comfort zone.” (Christopher Guttentag “Our students” Duke). The author chose this quote to support their persuasion by using it as a rallying call. No one is perfect, but the author knows that the ideal Duke student would answer the call. They would enroll not because they had to find a college but to enroll to make a difference, to be the change they wanted to see.

Response
Would I personally go to this college? Honestly yes. Duke is a wonderful college. There are so many things to do on campus. I have so many options to create not just a club for myself but an academic program for my design. All these options are great, but the main reason I would go to Duke is their biology and research programs.
Another reason I want to go to Duke is the community. Duke campus is a large campus packed with so many things to do and see. I always wanted to experience dorm life and being away from home. Just by looking at Duke’s virtual tours, I could get a glimpse of some of the fun activities I can experience there. Besides the community and research, I feel as if I can make a difference by going there. Duke is a college that gives people who want to make a difference, get involved, and create an option to make a real-world difference. This is important to me because it was a goal in my life to make a difference through biology by either figuring out a way to make surgery easier or discovering a treatment for an illness when I saw the amount of money I could receive for research my mind was made up.

CalArts

David Jeffries

3/7/22

Weaver

EngL

The California Institute of the arts (CalArts) is interested in a rather unique student. This institute desires culturally diverse students that are interested in a multitude of art forms and who desire creative freedom. The CalArts website uses the strategy of audience to appeal to their ideal student while imagining their ideal readers.

The California Institute of the arts has a well put together website that does a great job at persuading its readers to applying. The website does this by using a multitude of different writing strategies to make the articles appealing while providing information readers are most interested in. CalArts is in a constant state of speaking to their ideal reader. The website formats itself in ways that would appeal to likeminded people, trying its best to reach those that would be a good fit for CalArts. Another strategy the CalArts uses is keeping a well-defined constant tone throughout the entire website. It uses enthusiastic language choices and speaks confidently about what it has to offer. CalArts is fully invested in what it has to offer for its students and will strongly influence anyone who decides to read this website. These two strategies work together hand and hand to create an effective persuasive and informative website.

An Cal Arts ideal student is one that seeks a nonjudgmental realm of creativity where they are motivated by their environment to not only to create to the best of their ability but simultaneously be motivated by their environment to try new things and open their mind. CalArts preaches creative freedom and a multidisciplinary community , so now readers who weigh those values heavily while favoring this college options more than others (CalArts,1). Another way CalArts imagines its ideal reader is with the structure of the website. The front page of the website is constructed with a few of its programs being one of the first things the reader sees. This shows that art, critical studies, dance, film/video, music, and theater are CalArts’ most prominent and major programs.

Another strategy the website incorporates is tone. This Website speaks in a very confident and excited tone like, they can’t wait to show what they have to offer to their students. In turn the readers will become excited and trust that this college will deliver in what it says it has to offer. The website does this by using never use words or phrases like “probably,” “maybe, “or “you’ll may”, because this would make the reader feel like CalArts is uncertain in the information the website is providing. The Website is instead speaks in certainties and speaks like they know for a fact that this college is the perfect place for the reader to apply to. The CalArts states in the academic’s section that “CalArts offers a variety of unique programs at the undergraduate and graduate level within its six world-renowned Schools” (CalArts,1). Readers can just sense the excitement seeping through language like “world renowned”, and unique programs”. This excitement is contagious and transfers immediately to the readers. Sections of the Cal arts website like this leave a very positive impression on readers.

Writing strategies have been used for a long while to increase the effectiveness of persuasive and argumentative writing. This website is a notable example of how well used writing strategies help elevate any persuasion; they were used to fullest extent successfully. The website uses writing strategies like this over the course of many years to persuade students to apply to this college and will continue to do to. Strategies like such are infinitely valuable to writing and will continue to add value to not only college websites but anywhere where a written information is to be held.

If I were able to apply and be accepted into any college It would easily, be the California institute of the arts. This school heavily pushes creative freedom while simultaneously constantly influencing its students to experiment with different things creatively. With my goal to one day to become an animated tv show runner, learning to aptly experiment with different ideas and cultivate a mindset of bound-less creativity is very important. I know CalArts would push me in the right direction to accomplish this goal. I have always loved to try new things creatively but sometimes I tend to be a little reluctant and I feel like this institution would always point me back in the right direction. I know this the school greatly values persistence and always have I. Persistence is a core value I was raised on and attending a college that also holds this as a core value would be exceptionally accommodating. I feel as that accommodating your students is an especially important core aspect of any college and CalArts is no stranger to this. CalArts values large scale diversity and is very inclusive. CalArts exhibits this in its extensive list of student services, wellness groups, and other organizations, such as CARE teams, Mentor programs etc. With me being a black male, it is important for me to tend an intuition where I feel wanted, With CalArts falling in line with so many of my values while making me feel wanted I would definitely choose to attend this institution if given the opportunity too.

Major Project 3: Colleges

Louisiana State University (LSU): https://www.lsu.edu/,Summary/Analysis/ Response (SAR) Paper

Section 1/ Summary:

LSU isn’t just an institution of higher education, they’re a community and a culture.

What does LSU look for in a student: LSU will consider for admission the total high school record: rigor of courses completed, grades, test scores, educational objectives, school leadership, and breadth of experiences in and out of the classroom. Why LSU: It’s one of the oldest, most prestigious universities in the nation, it’s in the elite 1 percent with land-, sea-, and space-grant designations, which illustrates our commitment to research and community outreach that addresses the world’s most pressing issues. The Summary uses Audience and Case Studies.

Section 2/ Analysis:

For APATSARC, the author is writing or speaking to does who desire to go to college even if they’re native to the state of Louisiana or not. For Audience: In a section of an article called About LSU, says (they’re dedicated to changing lives), it shows or tells the reader or audience that they’re determined to help their students succeed. Another section of the article called Missions and Values, says “As the flagship institution of the state, the vision of Louisiana State University is to be a leading research-extensive university, challenging undergraduate and graduate students to achieve the highest levels of intellectual and personal development( Louisiana State University/ “About LSU”), it means that the University will challenge anyone who plans on attending or is already attending to difficult tasks throughout their semester. Another section of the article called Ready to Continue the Tiger Tradition of Excellence? (As if the author is asking the reader or the audience a question), says “Earning our distinction as an elite research university did not happen by chance. It took passionate commitment for finding answers that others could not. Here at LSU, you will work alongside the most highly acclaimed professors—who are making daily discoveries that positively impact the world—and will have access to unique opportunities and resources that position you for lifelong success.(Louisiana State University/ “About LSU”), it tells the reader or audience that the University has been built on hard work and those( the professors) that are teaching the student(s)(reader/ audience) will help them learn something new almost every day and accomplish their( the students) goals. Another section called LSU by Numbers, shows the reader or audience many records and achievements, the University has: 35,000+ for Student population, 1 of 24 Universities nationwide holding land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant designations, 16 Division 1 athletic teams, 1 of 8 Universities in the country with a law school, dental school, medical school, veterinary school, and an elite MBA program, $470M Amount of federal funding brought in by LSU institutions to the state, and $5.1B LSU′s economic impact on Louisiana  – A study by the Economics & Policy Research Group at the E. J. Ourso College of Business. ( Louisiana State University/ “About LSU”). For Rhetorical, the author either finds information or creates ideas to share with the reader/audience. For Case Studies: The author goes to the main website to find anything that make’s the university interesting for them to write about. On the main website, LSU provides many opportunities for those who wish to attend college there. Some interesting sections of the main website named It’s More Than Research shares information saying (At LSU, Louisiana’s flagship institution, the research we perform is not only our duty, but also what drives us. From cancer and diabetes to coastal sustainability, energy, and agriculture, we improve the lives of our neighbors and loved ones every day. In the past year alone, LSU garnered $160 million in research funds, which returned $490 million in economic impact to the state.), this is what the author shares with the reader/ audience or those who want to do more for the university outside of the classroom. The website also shows Featured News to those who don’t know what’s happened recently at the campus. It shows different articles like: LSU Home of Most Important Private Collection of African American Poetry, LSU Earns 2021 Tree Campus USA Distinction from Arbor Day Foundation for 10th Year, and Beyond Biodegradable Mardi Gras Beads. The author informs the reader about the Historic Milestones and Events the University has.

Section 3/ Response:

Would I go to this college? If I lived in the state of Louisiana then yes, but right now I’m living in Georgia. The Money System I looked is mind-blowing, Tuition and Fees (Louisiana Resident: $11,958/ Non-Louisiana Resident: $28,635), Housing (Both Louisiana and Non-Louisiana Resident are the same with $8,376), Meal Plan (12 Tiger Meals) (Both Louisiana and Non-Louisiana Resident are also the same with $4,434), In TOTAL for Louisiana Resident: $24,768 and for Non-Louisiana Resident: $41,445. If it moved to Georgia I would still probably go. If there is one value word that I would describe LSU, it would be success. It describes the result of hard work and dedication the students put in. Early 2022, I was getting interested in the State of Louisiana with their unique Creole and Cajun culture, food, jazz music, Mardi Gras festival and voodoo lore and I wondered what their college level of education is like down there. I wanted to know more about LSU thanks to their football team, when I looked at some live photos of the campus, I was blown away. I then imagined the achievements and accomplishments I could make if I was a student who enrolled there. I would embrace the new atmosphere, environments, and probably learn a lot about Cajun Culture. So, these are all the reason’s why I chose LSU as my chose for the project.

University of Pennsylvania: Summary, Analysis, and Response project

Summary

The University of Pennsylvania is a private non-profit university and one of the Ivy League universities in the United States. On their website, they use the large APATSARC strategy of Imagining Ideal Readers and the small rhetorical strategy of Logos to attract their ideal students. Based on these strategies, they want to attract students who are interested in highly intellectual areas such as science and politics. They want students who appreciate art and are willing to analyze and discuss it, and students who look to stay involved in campus’ events.

Analysis

The website of UPenn opens with a text that says “Health Science” followed by a headline that says “From wearable light to tech startup,” (upenn.edu) which is an announcement about Lumify Care (an LED light for nurses) launching an app and a new version later this year. The announcement states that Lumify Care was “supported by the 2021 President’s Innovation Prize and co-founded by May graduate Anthony Scarpone-Lambert and NICU nurse Jennifferre Mancillas” (upenn.edu). This is the first thing shown as soon as the website is opened. By opening with information and facts, the rhetorical strategy of Logos is being applied. UPenn wants to inform its audience about the research innovations achieved by its students, and expects its audience to be interested in it.

The text is shown with an image that occupies the whole screen. The image includes a student wearing formal clothing. By doing this, the university is applying the APATSARC strategy of Imagining Ideal Readers. What is more likely for students to wear is casual clothing, but UPenn is looking for students who are interested in fields where formal clothing might be required. Examples of areas of work where this might apply include education, science, and politics. And we know that these are fields UPenn prioritizes because of its news sections, which is below the opening announcement on the website. The news section is separated by different categories, which include “Education, Business, & Law,” “Campus & Community,” “Art, Humanities, & Social Sciences,” and “Sports.” The articles go from news about the state of Pennsylvania and cyberattacks in Russia, to information about the metaverse and climate change. UPenn is looking for students who are up-to-date with the challenges and innovations happening in the world.

After the news section, an article about “Science & Technology” is highlighted. It includes a short description about UPenn Engineering researchers that is followed by a link to the full story. Below the article there is a section of Upcoming Events. It displays a list of three art exhibits happening throughout China, the Caribbean, and the Middle East in the following couple of months. By mentioning only art events, UPenn is trying to get the attention of students who are attracted towards the art field. This way they also want to show that their people believe that art has value, and that their students staying involved in the institution’s events matters to them.

Below the Upcoming Events section follows the introduction to two projects. “Inspiring Impact” is the name of one of them. There is a button under it that says “Support Penn” and it gives a link to a separate webpage where it is explained how making a donation towards the institution would help, and why. The second project is called “Penn COMPACT 2022.” It claims that the project focuses on inclusivity, innovation, and impact. It explains that the university wants students who will take everybody into consideration, regardless of race, nationality, religion, or financial background; also students who are creative and have a sense of leadership, and want to make a change in the world and their community.

Following the projects, there is a gallery displayed that shows the priorities of UPenn. It claims that its priorities are “Climate and Sustainability Action Plan,” “Diversity and Inclusion,” “Penn Cares,” and “Campaign for Community.” UPenn is attempting to convince its audience that the well-being of the community matters, and that it wants its students and staff to feel welcomed, safe, and at home.

The next section is for the audience to find the university’s social media and connect with other students, and for them to be updated with news about the campus. Following, the last section is titled “Equal Opportunity and Nondiscrimination at Penn.” In this section, the idea of being inclusive and how important it is for them to have an environment of talented people who are from diverse backgrounds is again reinforced. It states that if there is any concern about this policy, they can be addressed with the “Executive Director of the Office of Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity Programs.”

Response

There are many reasons why I would not be able to attend this university. My family would like me to stay near them and Pennsylvania is very far away. Money would also be an issue. Regardless of this, if these reasons did not exist, I would definitely like to attend this university.

I like that UPenn welcomes students that appreciate art. Even though it is a research university and it is interested in students who are more politically and scientifically inclined, it still wants to include students who are interested in art and design fields. There are many people who consider art to be “pointless” and claim that studying a career related to art will be a waste of time and money. As an art major student, seeing such a recognized university care about art just as much as other majors makes me want to go there. And because UPenn is one of the Ivy League universities in the United States, I know that if I got a degree from there, I would have higher chances of getting a job at top design companies. I also like that one of the major policies at UPenn is about nondiscrimination and diversity. I was not born in the United States, and people notice that by my accent. Even though being from another country has become easier for me, it did not use to be that way, and I know that there are people just like me who feel out of place sometimes.

Because of these reasons, I believe that if money and distance were not a problem for me I would be comfortable attending UPenn and completing all of my degrees there.

“Colorado state University” Summary/Analysis/ Response (SAR) Paper

Summary

Colorado State University is a research college located in Fort Collins Colorado. This is a very technical institution college that encourages students to be social and get involved with other curricular activities. They list ‘’passions” are available to ” explore” this program, it spotlights athletics programs like track and field, basketball, and softball. They offer career choices or in their words “passions’ ‘ like agricultural science, business, engineering. this school because it focuses on the social part of college that can help you in your future career.

Analysis

Colorado State University is a great example of the rhetorical strategies of Audience and Imaging the ideal reader. Colorado state does a great job on persuading the type of students they want at their school and what a college should look like. When students are applying for colleges, they want something that provides them with what they need to start their career path and what their four-year plan should consist of while staying at Colorado State University. Their target audience would be students who are very social and willing to participate in school activities and have a plan on what their life will be like when being accepted into Colorado State University.

The target audience which are transfers and undergrad students are looking for a school that provides them with technical science, and business careers. According to the Colorado state university website it says “exploring Colorado” (CSU, Home page ). This gives students a chance to research their passions and what students are looking for to see if this school and what it offers is the best pick for. According to the Colorado state website there’s an icon titled “Engagements” (CSU, Engagements). They also allow you to look up certain clubs and programs that help the college and outside community develop social skills that help the environment. This allows students to participate in activities that involve school to help the environment, and to get the community involved.

Colorado State University does an excellent job using the rhetorical strategy Imaging the Ideal Reader by grabbing the student’s attention when opening the website. According to Colorado State university they show students getting involved in these curricular activities and other partakes in the student life that shows how the school functions (CSU, Homepage). This demonstrates what audience they persuade that want to apply for their college. According to Colorado State University in the “Academics” icon they have where you can do more research on a certain passion you may have or that can be like what a student may be looking for in their career choice (CSU, Academics).  When Students are looking for a career, they are looking for they want to know what exactly they are going to be studying, in this case if a student wants to know more about what they’re going to be learning. That’s why it’s great that Colorado State provides that type of research for students, so they’ll know what they’ll be studying for the next four years of their career.

Colorado State attracts its students more on the social side of college because at times students are going to need that social aspect in college. According to Colorado State University, they have an athletics program where they show the different sports, spirit weeks, times, and dates for the games, and some of the highlights from certain sports teams to show their achievements they’ve accomplished (CSU, Athletics). Majority of the students that want to attend colleges look for schools who have an athletics program, so that students can be involved with their school more often. Since this college focuses on the environment and how to help the community more, they want people to be involved in these activities. According to Colorado state university they have community outreaches to help out by taking care of the environment in the community, and learning new things that can help those students who are developing their career or even beginning their career ( CSU, Economics and community outreach).these outreaches were so that students could help out the community, but also the community could help them in return by holding fundraisers for certain clubs that consist or a student’s career choice or curricular activities.

When students are looking for schools, they want a university that will accommodate their needs and services to what this school has to offer. Students at Colorado State University can benefit off the thorough research that they allow students to access when looking for their “passion”. Knowing there are colleges that just let you pick a career without knowing what students are studying. Luckly Colorado state wants students to keep “Charging Forward”.

Response

I would consider going to Colorado state university because this college would allow me to be a more social college student. By encouraging me to get involved with my school and to become more social instead of staying to myself. During our free writing professor Weaver asked us what other colleges we would have gone to besides Georgia state university and my response was Southern University and Hbcu located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana because of the social events for business students and African American like myself to connect with others that would benefit my career choice. Because I feel like when it comes to college that will best suit me, I want to find as much diversity and similarities and possible to get different takes on the different aspects of other people’s lives.

I like the fact that they call their careers “passions “because whatever I want to pursue in my life or whatever I’m gifted in that is a passion, what I initially have an equipped love for. A lot of colleges were more strictly focused on your career and felt like an in and out process to just get what you came for and go. When in my college experience I prefer to have a more social aspect of it because I’m more of a social person that doesn’t want to be kept from any opportunity that some colleges may not have for me, even though the goal is to be connected as much as possible

Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU)

Summary

The college I chose is FAMU. This college is a historically black university located in Tallahassee, Florida. It is ranked number one in historically black colleges (HBCU) and has 23 degrees ranked top 10 in the U.S. This website is appealing to young adults of all races, but particularly grasping the attention of African Americans. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) uses ethos and Kairos to appeal to readers sense of family and community while acknowledging current historical events to convince prospective students to apply.

Analysis

Just like a magazine or a commercial, A college’s website is just a large advertising venue. These institutions use different ways to appeal and attract prospective students to apply to their school. The #1 HBCU FAMU is no different, this college uses Kairos and ethos to appeal to students’ sense of belonging. They use certain things to grab visitors’ attention and keep it. Besides the visual attention grabbers, they use bold letters and quotes to grab the attention of visitors. FAMU entices students to apply by appealing to their ethics on family, history, and the current climate in the world.

The first instance seen on the website to entice students to apply is a quote in big bold letters reading “Join the Famuly.”(FAMU “Main Webpage” Besides the typography this is an example of the author grasping the reader’s attention with the analytic strategy ethos. It gives students the impression that they are included, which in turn will make them more likely to apply. This is an example of ethos because the school includes prospective students into this shared community, making them feel like the university will make them feel right at home.

The website also displays the strategy ethos by highlighting black excellence. There is a news webpage celebrating African American alumni who went on to do remarkable things in the world. This is an example of ethos because it appeals to visitors’ emotions about ethics and pride. It makes readers feel like they could reach those same height if only they apply. They appeal to African American sense of pride and prosperity. “You are the answered prayers of our ancestors. You represent the hope of the slaves in the cotton fields. You are the dream come true of the dream deferred.” (FAMU “News”) This provokes students to want to be a part of something so prestigious and historical. This quote highlights how FAMU evokes emotions on ethics in prospective students to get them to apply to the school.

Another instance of FAMU compelling prospective students to apply is their acknowledgment of current historical context regarding the coronavirus. They use Kairos to show prospective students they support healthy and preventative measures toward the coronavirus. The website quotes “Remember, we can’t be FAM without U getting vaccinated.” (FAMU “Main Webpage”) This shows that they are in support of current global issues and that they are taking it seriously. This would attract students because they would be more likely to apply to a school that is safe and that acknowledges current economic issues.

FAMU also displays the use of the analytic strategy Kairos by having a whole page designated to sustainability. FAMU advertises a program called the sustainability institute where their students troubleshoot current climate change problems. This is an example of Kairos given the current environmental issues the earth is facing in the coming years. Not only is the environment at risk, but Florida is the most susceptible to disasters caused by climate change. “The Sustainability Institute supports Florida A&M University’s vision to be a living laboratory of innovations and learning experiences that generate global solutions.” (FAMU “Sustainability Portal”)  This explains how FAMU acknowledges the current environmental issues and commits to working toward a better environment.

The hashtag Black Lives Matter can be seen plastered across multiple pages on the FAMU website. This is an example of Kairos because the school is making sure we are aware that they support the current historical climate we are living in. FAMU showing their support for the Black Lives Matter movement could be an example of ethos and Kairos because not only is it an acknowledgement of current historical context, but it also speaks to prospective students’ ethics.

FAMU uses ethos and Kairos the influence prospective students to apply to their college. Appealing to a prospective students’ feelings on ethics, sense of belonging, and using their acknowledgement of current historical context FAMU compels prospective students to apply to their university. They use these methods because they evoke certain feelings of belonging, safety, and community in people. They are a historically black college so it is obvious that they would acknowledge black history, Black Lives Matter movements and impower alumni that broke barriers. They also show support for the current environmental and health issues we are dealing with globally. FAMU use multiple ways to compel prospective students to apply to their university, the most easily identifiable strategies are ethos and Kairos.

Response

All else equal FAMU would be my ideal school. If money and location were not a problem FAMU would be my second choice after Howard University. Not only am I an African American female and the college is an HBCU, but it also serves all the values that I value. In class when we wrote down our three values my number one value was family. The whole thesis statement of FAMU is family. If I had been introduced to this school when I graduated, I would have attended because it is so close to where my family lives. My main worry about going away to college is that I would be away from the only people I have ever known, so a school like FAMU would have given me so much pride to attend the school just like GSU (Georgia State University) gives me. One of the first main ideas that I analyzed was the fact that they emphasized family on the main webpage. This college would have appealed to me because in my value inventory I stated “Family; I chose this because it is the most important thing in my life.”

Cornell University

Calvin Thompson

Dr. Weaver

English Comp II

4 March 2022

Summary

Cornell College is a college that presents itself as a community for all attendees including staff. They are about students thriving and becoming successful while attending. Cornell believes in engaging in the community and gaining life experiences, with over 270+ courses they offer dedicated to just this purpose (Cornell University, public engagement page). They also have over 7,000 students contributing annually to these local communities. Cornell’s mission is to target students who are already active in their current environment or students who are open to being heavily active in their environment. Students and faculty are also very high on sustainability, with Cornell College being the #1 ivy league college when it comes to this factor. With the amount of students that are active on campus, this is fairly facile (CU, sustainability page).. As far as grading does, Cornell College uses a fair letter grading system, with an A+ (4.3) being the highest possible grade and a F (0.0) being the lowest possible grade.

Analysis

As presented in the summary, the college is trying to target a certain group of potential students. They want these students to feel as though this is the college for them, by presenting such school activities and organizations to help persuade the ideal student to attend the school. Cornell offers a “hub” that houses six units and programs, dedicated for students interested in creating a environment for all student body (CU, Engaged Cornell Hub). This is a major contribution to the school’s core values, which includes being “a community of belonging” (CU, Core Values).

To further explicate, the ideal reader that would be researching this college and contemplating if they may want to attend this college is the student who is already actively seeking for a community that is both engaging and expressive. The college expresses the Small Rhetorical Strategy of “audience” because of their mission statement and active role in the community. Cornell University’s mission is to make sure students are expressive and innovative. This college strives to not only help the students attending, but also the community of its small town Ithaca, NY. The school encourages students to participate in social gatherings and environmental changes. A big part of the school’s mission is to maintain high sustainability for each campus, in which they also include Cornell Tech. Cornell college also is major in leadership, with the college having organizations that are dedicated to just that. For example, their page on the “Board of Trustees” gives a little insight on their Vice President and General Counsel, Donica Thomas Varner.

There are also links on the page that further talk about the committee’s contributions. Shying away from the topic of keeping up with the community, the college is also known for its elite status in being an “ivy league school or ancient eight” (CU, university facts). The school is a federal land grant institution, making it a private university although they have a strong public influence (CU, university facts). Cornell University is the first college, of many, that offer over 19 modern Asian languages (CU, university facts) which is major considering only a few colleges offer this. Cornell college is seemingly variant in who they may target, but all students who apply or who are interested in attending this school must have at least two thing in common, which is their community engagement and their academic stability. Students also must come prepared due to the high school population (25,582 as of Fall ‘21) because it may be troubling acquiring proper help. This is very important to many students, because they may need certain resources the college may offer but due to the school populating so many students, resources may be limited. So it is recommended that all students that plan to attend this school, create study habits that stick and are efficient. Make sure you are very understanding and very schedule-oriented. The school is also big on “Diversity and Inclusion”, as it has a page dedicated just to explain their mission of implanting any and every student with a proper education regardless of their race or background. The college “strives to be a welcoming, caring and equitable community” (CU, Diversity and Inclusion page).

Response

Now the question is this: Would I attend this school? Based on the general audience the school is reaching out to, I don’t think I would be a great fit for one reason. I try to utilize all of my resources when attending a school, so for me not to be able to get proper help when needed due to overpopulation. The college is great as far as education, due to its large number of undergraduate students that return as graduate students. Although, there are many internships offered once you are far into your field. This could be helpful to students who are seeking jobs right after they are out of school and want to go straight into their career.
