Prairie View A&M University

Summary

Students should attend the historical astounding Prairie View A&M University HBCU because it’s an educated/loving atmosphere that will allow you to encourage business and personal relationships. They have challenging and engaging curriculum that they have for STEM majors. For example, including biology and energy engineering. Also, the ability to network and expand yourself as a scholar and professional.

Analysis

Prairie View A&M University uses the large rhetorical strategy of Imaging Ideal Readers and the rhetorical style of logos to persuade readers of the phenomenal university. This website corresponds to opportunities and potential to grow while attending PVAMU. Using ideal readers as a rthetorical strategy was a good way to structure the audience as to why it’s the best school for you. This university targets a student who can show leadership and is academically talented. The university explains it provides educational experiences that will prepare graduates for professional practice and a meaningful social service “excellence through imperatives will lead us boldly with imagination and vision.” (PVAMU,16). There mission is to provide high quality educational experience for students completing their bachelor’s, master’s, or doctorate degrees. PVAMU has a diversity of majors which includes business, engineering, architecture, nursing, and arts of sciences.

The website opens to a slide show with images that includes students sitting down in a group with laptops. Which seems like they are all having a conversation and they are dressed up professionally, the university is applying imaging ideal readers. Additionally looks like PVAMU is looking for students who are interested in business and nursing fields. There academic section is separated by different categories, which are: college of business, college of engineering, college of nursing, and college of arts and sciences. For example, when the website was discussing academic, they explain “provides opportunities for students to participate in experiential learning opportunities that are an essential component of the undergraduate learning experience, through High Impact Practices i.e., research, internships, and service learning.” They explain why these skills are important. The ideal readers are the people who are interested in attending PVAMU college the website is giving out information about the college and what is expected.

Response

Honestly, yes, I would attend Prairie View A&M University. I like the university building designs it provides everything needed for students under that certain department. It is reachable 24hrs a day, 7 days a week making it easier for students to complete things. PVAMU has great history that is the key to the school and the students, faculty and staff motivate each other to keep it alive. Another reason why I would attend is because it is an HBCU. I feel as though I fit right in. I feel like the university caters to our needs and are truly preparing us for the real world. I like how Prairie View during campus events alcohol isn’t permitted, at most colleges students turn to partying and drinking. My values from the list are teamwork, safety, and caring. I chose teamwork because I feel like nothing won’t be as good enough without help from classmates or advice. I chose safety because as a student I wouldn’t want to be on an unsafe campus or neighborhood. Caring because the professors should really care about and take time to make sure they succeed.

Clemson University – Major Project 3 (Update)

Angel Sabino

Professor Weaver

Summary:

Clemson strives to be a place that can become home to students. Throughout the whole school, students can be satisfied with the activists that the school offers. The University of Clemson’s ideal students are those that have future goals, and ambitions, While still having historical traditions within themselves. The University of Clemson’s mission is to have students be a part of something big as the campus looks semi-new but keeps an old type of historical architecture.

Analysis:

When first opening the website https://www.clemson.edu/the question “What will Clemson start for you ?” is on the home page of the official Clemson website and opens up the idea of growth. The question is associated with the definition of Large Rhetorical called case studies, a “Research method involving an up-close, in-depth, and detailed examination of a subject of study,” stated Wikipedias definition. This question also brings up the strategy purpose in a Small “In-the-text” Rhetorical Strategie method by making the students look at the future of the visitor. Clemson also looks at them themselves as “family,” which gives their students a sense of purpose. Clemson also has a strong relationship with its students, unlike many other large universities, in academic and athletic success. The soccer program in Clemson has won the “National state championship” in D1 college soccer. This success also relates to many other sports programs at Clemson.

Further, more on the websites, visitors can see that Clemson creates a significant amount of the small “In-the-text” Rhetorical strategy purpose. For example, the statement “Join the Clemson Family” is a prime example of how Clemson has created a feeling of belonging among students. The Clemson website writer used this “In dept” strategy as a method of Large Rhetorical Case studies to attract high school students to their college. This Large Rhetorical case study helps the university build trust among the students and helps in their path to being their future selves. Most importantly, the university wants the students to feel like college students and be comfortable enough to seek a new beginning. Clemson makes seeking a new beginning easy with its many activities in and out of school. These significant and historical traditions also attract many students to their college.

There, the leading college in Sikes Hall in South Carolina. The location is just one of the many attractions that make Clemson unique to visitors. Like Clemson, the city also has a lot to offer, and so does the Natural life. Clemson sits next to East Beach in South Carolina, according to https://www.clemson.edu/research/post-docs/resources/about-city.html. Many students take the time to go to these places. All the surrounding activities that the website shows make the students more engaged in what the college offers. The activities make students more “In-dept,” this is the definition from Wikipedia regarding large Rhetorical case studies. Their financial support, as well as the administration, is one of the best in South Carolina. The university also has to offer historical and new programs. While Clemson is making changes throughout the college, it still holds historical traditions. Most students like these traditions. The university is also a deficient populated city home to most students who attend Clemson. They have many activities, but they also have many “Upcoming campus events” that students can partake in. Unlike many other large universities, Clemson provides students with the facilities and tools to do what they strive for academically and athletically.

Response:

“Would I go to this college?” Is the big questions here. There are better universities than Clemson with a better campus, program, and staff. Although the admission and campus are lovely, The sense of a family environment throughout the college is what would make me go to this college. The amount of activities and the capability to do anything physically is terrific, and the ideologies of the university also make me want to go to Clemson. The critical thing that makes me want to come to this university is the sense of belonging and the new programs it offers. The major that I would like to pursue also plays a big part in my decision in wanting to go to this Clemson. Overall, I would like to go to this college because of the things it offers.

Duke University (Revised

Summary
When curious students enter the website, they are greeted by pictures of the lush and beautiful scenery of the college campus. Duke University wants new students to enroll, whether it is undergraduates or transfer students. Duke is seeking “people of action,” they’re looking for people who want to make real change and who aren’t afraid to challenge the status quo. Through using purpose, the author informs these students what life would be like if they enrolled, and through using the ideal reader the author reaches out to these new students.

Analysis

The author’s purpose is to get new students to enroll and feel welcome at Duke University. By using the website, they reach out to new students by informing them of what life would be like if they enrolled. They want new students to feel at home and welcome. They want readers to wonder if this life is for me? When they first enter the website, they are greeted by bold words over a picture of the Duke campus saying, “This is Duke.” The author does this to give the reader a glimpse and a view of what’s happening at Duke. The author wants the reader to be intrigued and curious about the campus. By highlighting events that are happening today, the reader will be curious enough to continue looking through the website. As they scroll, they will discover Duke’s calendar of “events to come” allowing them to click, set a reminder and get an overview of the event and location so they can decide whether they’ll go or not. The author continues to welcome the reader and persuade them to join, by highlighting social media posts from people’s honest opinions of the college on Twitter on “#Duke Social.” By doing this the author uses real opinions and testimonies about the college to show readers that other people love and think they should join the college, too. As they find their way through the easy-to-navigate tabs, they’ll find themselves on the admission page. From there the authors grab their attention again with a big bright phrase asking the reader to imagine “how many lives can you live in four years?” By questioning the reader, the author gets them to think about the many ways they can live their new lives on campus. As one student put it “The Duke experience is all-encompassing, interactive, and vibrant. There’s an element of camaraderie here that doesn’t exist anywhere else.”(Edward Coles, Admissions”). This quote supports the author’s purpose by telling new students that life at Duke is a more unique experience than anywhere else and that these are words from a student who just graduated last year. Duke has numerous amounts of students and staff on campus, with Duke having an 8:1 ratio of students to staff and over 6,542 students to meet and become comrades with. The author knows moving somewhere new and making new friends is tough, so they highlight campus life by phrasing “Community foundation”(Duke Campus life). By doing this they continue to persuade the readers by explaining to them how all first-year students will live together and eat together so they will be able to forge a friendship as well as talk to others who might be experiencing the same feelings that they are going through.

Another strategy used by the author is the large rhetorical strategy, imagining the ideal reader. The ideal reader is not necessarily the best; it’s the reader, but those who would grasp the idea the author is telling. The author goes about doing this by highlighting Duke’s academic data, the kind of things students can do off and on campus to make a difference, and the kind of students Duke is searching for. The author highlights Duke’s academic data by informing readers about the different and numerous combinations of fifty-three majors, fifty-two minors, and twenty-three certificates they can earn through Duke with 437,989 combinations of the three. Duke offers new students the option to build the academic life they want and gives them access to advanced learning centers, one-on-one with their professors at an 8:1 ratio, meaning there’s always someone they can talk to for help. The authors highlight Duke’s research opportunity and the $800,000,000 spent on research funding, which tells readers, that there are many things they can research and discover without a fair amount of funding. The author also informs the reader about the many ways they can make a real-world difference off-campus by informing them about the 1.6 million hours Duke students have volunteered through programs like Duke Engage or the opportunity to make their degree program with Program II. This shows the reader that’s looking to get involved with programs to make a difference in the world, that they’re available for them to sign up and start making a difference as soon as they join. Lastly, the author uses imaging the ideal reader by quoting the Dean of undergraduates admission by stating, “We look for students who operate at the intersection of imagination and impact—students who are unafraid to undertake things that are messy, complex, and outside of their comfort zone.” (Christopher Guttentag “Our students” Duke). The author chose this quote to support their persuasion by using it as a rallying call. No one is perfect, but the author knows that the ideal Duke student would answer the call. They would enroll not because they had to find a college but to enroll to make a difference, to be the change they wanted to see.

Response
Would I personally go to this college? Honestly yes. Duke is a wonderful college. There are so many things to do on campus. I have so many options to create not just a club for myself but an academic program for my design. All these options are great, but the main reason I would go to Duke is their biology and research programs.
Another reason I want to go to Duke is the community. Duke campus is a large campus packed with so many things to do and see. I always wanted to experience dorm life and being away from home. Just by looking at Duke’s virtual tours, I could get a glimpse of some of the fun activities I can experience there. Besides the community and research, I feel as if I can make a difference by going there. Duke is a college that gives people who want to make a difference, get involved, and create an option to make a real-world difference. This is important to me because it was a goal in my life to make a difference through biology by either figuring out a way to make surgery easier or discovering a treatment for an illness when I saw the amount of money I could receive for research my mind was made up.

Analysis: Case Western Reserve University

Summary:

Case Western Reserve University is a research college located in Cleveland, OH. They pride themselves on real-world, hands-on learning with a strong research spine. While they are known for research, they also offer robust art programs. They target high school graduates from around the world with a strong sense of wanting to create change in the world around them through proven data.

Analysis:

On Case Western Reserve University’s website, they use pathos and ethos to lure graduating high school seniors to attend. They don’t want just any type of student; they want a student that can, “think beyond the possible” (CWRU, “Landing Page”). This will be a necessary way of thinking about one’s future while navigating their way through CWRU’s curriculum, a curriculum that will support students who want to be innovators, trailblazers, healers, scholars, performers, and creators in a researched-based, hands-on way. They display this by having a video on their landing page of students performing their major. Showing prospective students that the current students are learning by doing then stating that, “99% of our undergrads take part in experiential learning, including research, co-ops, and internships” (CWRU, “Landing Page”).

While doing research for this analysis, the university changed its website. An observation that was made from the previous format to the current one is one of integrity through ethos. In the previous format, there was a statement about how the university has a “responsibility to work to eradicate systemic racism” (CWRU, “Landing Page”). Jump to the current format, and you see a diverse student body along with a professor who is a black woman wearing her hair in dreadlocks, which has been used as a form of discrimination. Seeing this on their website is showing prospective students that they can come to the table as their full selves, which will allow them to engage in learning and contributing more deeply.

The student body appears to be a diverse one with an emphasis on learning and being someone that could help with positive change for the future. This is demonstrated on the landing page, where the school highlights five different research projects that have gone on at CWRU and four quotes from a variety of students. Winston K. states, “One of the best things about CWRU is they accept you holistically. CWRU wants you to find what you want to do in life, without added pressure” (CWRU, “Landing Page”). Seeing a student of color talk about being holistically accepted at the school reiterates their ethos of getting rid of systemic racism.

When leaving for college, there are a lot of concerns about what this new chapter is going to look like with the ever-changing social climate that we are in. However, CWRU has set up safety nets for young students. They have programs that allow students to get free shuttles across campus or an escort to lessen the probability of getting attacked. They even have a mobile app called “Rave Guardian” that students can download and link to their student email address to contact campus police in seconds. If you’re a student that likes to make sure you don’t have only one line of defense, then the school offers self-defense classes. Having these programs set in place shows the students that they not only see that there are external fears outside of academia, but they have built programs to empower students to take care of themselves (CRWU, “Health and Safety”).

Case Western Reserve University appeals to high school graduates that want to be humanitarians. You see this in the way they talk about offering different schools of thought from biology to medicine to manufacturing to the arts. How they do things differently is based on the ongoing research that the school is known for, like seeing how different types of acting can improve the mental health of kids or discovering a protein in the gut crucial to healing gut disease. They are sticking to their word of “One breakthrough at a time, we’re helping to build a better world” (CWRU, “Research”).

Response:

After looking over Case Western Reserve University’s website, I could tell that even though I am an older, transfer student, there would be a place for me there because of the school’s humanitarian ethos. Seeing that the school didn’t center itself around Greek life and the school’s sports teams but around the Arts and local food scene gave me the feeling of a more sensible student body.

When analyzing the school’s website, seeing their commitment to research, and teaching the next world leaders, I got the feeling that they are producing a community of people that will hold others accountable through data. Yes, data can be viewed as cold and lifeless, but exposing the students to the local visual and performing art can evoke a more well-rounded student. Also, having a diverse student body, with over 90 different countries represented at the university, will allow the students to experience a culture they may not be used to (CWRU, “Landing Page”).

Before the website change, I found one video on CWRU’s “About Page” that spoke to me as a potential student going into a science field. The video was made by the marketing and communications students, and it showed diverse people in the greater community enjoying local food, entertainment, and camaraderie. This let me know, as someone that enjoys going to plays and farmer’s markets, that I would be about to find like-minded people outside of Greek life and sports groups. If Case Western Reserve University was located in Atlanta, GA, and I was awarded a scholarship, I would apply in a heartbeat.

CalArts

The California Institute of the arts (CalArts) is interested in a rather unique student. This institute desires culturally diverse students that are interested in a multitude of art forms and who desire creative freedom. The CalArts website uses the strategy of audience to appeal to their ideal student while imagining their ideal readers.

The California Institute of the arts has a well put together website that does a great job at persuading its readers to applying. The website does this by using a multitude of different writing strategies to make the articles appealing while providing information readers are most interested in. CalArts is in a constant state of speaking to their ideal reader. The website formats itself in ways that would appeal to likeminded people, trying its best to reach those that would be a good fit for CalArts. Another strategy the CalArts uses is keeping a well-defined constant tone throughout the entire website. It uses enthusiastic language choices and speaks confidently about what it has to offer. CalArts is fully invested in what it has to offer for its students and will strongly influence anyone who decides to read this website. These two strategies work together hand and hand to create an effective persuasive and informative website.

An Cal Arts ideal student is one that seeks a nonjudgmental realm of creativity where they are motivated by their environment to not only to create to the best of their ability but simultaneously be motivated by their environment to try new things and open their mind. CalArts preaches creative freedom and a multidisciplinary community , so now readers who weigh those values heavily while favoring this college options more than others (CalArts,1). Another way CalArts imagines its ideal reader is with the structure of the website. The front page of the website is constructed with a few of its programs being one of the first things the reader sees. This shows that art, critical studies, dance, film/video, music, and theater are CalArts’ most prominent and major programs.

Another strategy the website incorporates is tone. This Website speaks in a very confident and excited tone like, they can’t wait to show what they have to offer to their students. In turn the readers will become excited and trust that this college will deliver in what it says it has to offer. The website does this by using never use words or phrases like “probably,” “maybe, “or “you’ll may”, because this would make the reader feel like CalArts is uncertain in the information the website is providing. The Website is instead speaks in certainties and speaks like they know for a fact that this college is the perfect place for the reader to apply to. The CalArts states in the academic’s section that “CalArts offers a variety of unique programs at the undergraduate and graduate level within its six world-renowned Schools” (CalArts,1). Readers can just sense the excitement seeping through language like “world renowned”, and unique programs”. This excitement is contagious and transfers immediately to the readers. Sections of the Cal arts website like this leave a very positive impression on readers.

Writing strategies have been used for a long while to increase the effectiveness of persuasive and argumentative writing. This website is a notable example of how well used writing strategies help elevate any persuasion; they were used to fullest extent successfully. The website uses writing strategies like this over the course of many years to persuade students to apply to this college and will continue to do to. Strategies like such are infinitely valuable to writing and will continue to add value to not only college websites but anywhere where a written information is to be held.

If I were able to apply and be accepted into any college It would easily, be the California institute of the arts. This school heavily pushes creative freedom while simultaneously constantly influencing its students to experiment with different things creatively. With my goal to one day to become an animated tv show runner, learning to aptly experiment with different ideas and cultivate a mindset of bound-less creativity is very important. I know CalArts would push me in the right direction to accomplish this goal. I have always loved to try new things creatively but sometimes I tend to be a little reluctant and I feel like this institution would always point me back in the right direction. I know this the school greatly values persistence and always have I. Persistence is a core value I was raised on and attending a college that also holds this as a core value would be exceptionally accommodating. I feel as that accommodating your students is an especially important core aspect of any college and CalArts is no stranger to this. CalArts values large scale diversity and is very inclusive. CalArts exhibits this in its extensive list of student services, wellness groups, and other organizations, such as CARE teams, Mentor programs etc. With me being a black male, it is important for me to tend an intuition where I feel wanted, With CalArts falling in line with so many of my values while making me feel wanted I would definitely choose to attend this institution if given the opportunity too.

Drexel University: The Research University

Amayah Jones

ENGL 1102

Drexel University

Summary:

Drexel University was founded by Anthony J. Drexel in Philadelphia, PA in 1891 as a school for higher education in the world of constant innovation. While dedicated to finding solutions to the world’s problems through extensive experiments and research, Drexel University allows its students to participate in potential discoveries. This makes the ideal Drexel student someone willing to positively impact their community and the future. The website uses the APATSARC strategy assumptions aligning with the large rhetorical strategy imagining ideal readers to persuade the audience to become students. All in all, Drexel University works to improve society and give students practical experience in their career pathway.

Analysis:

The Drexel University website expresses what students will be exposed to in this urban-based school from major projects to individual advancement. On the website, the school uses assumptions along with imagining ideal readers to capture audience’s interest. They attempt to apply to as many individuals as possible, mentioning their contribution to various fields. The website is complemented by the school’s continuously growing reputation and presence in the academic world. So, while the website uses the aspects of the school to attract many individuals, the target audience is those interested in research and creating a major impact on the world.

The Drexel University website looks to use its location and prestige to grasp the audience which is where assumptions are introduced. As mentioned, it is in the heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is a “world-class comprehensive R1 research institution and a global leader in experiential education” (Drexel University). The website assumes that the audience is responsive to life in the city and being a part of the reputation and discoveries offered by Drexel University. Therefore, the university highlights elements that they presume will be appealing based on their ideal audience. For example, the website expresses that Drexel is “. . . putting students on the front lines of innovation alongside the visionaries shaping the future of their fields” (Drexel University). In other words, Drexel works to give students hands-on experience, ultimately building their resumes while allowing them to assist in potential groundbreaking discoveries. The Drexel strategy is based on the expectation that those reading are revolutionists and bear extensive goals. Overall, the school is looking to pique people’s interest when mentioning its domination in experimental education.

The school also uses its reputation when imagining ideal readers, because they are looking for people that are persuaded by the thought of attending an esteemed school such as how some people go to Harvard based on its prestige alone. As a result, this school website includes its ranking and achievements such as being “Awarded the designation of “R1 Doctoral University — Very High Research Activity” by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions (2019)” and disclosing 43 total inventions (Drexel University). The website looks from the perspective of students who want to be associated with a school well known for immense success. Drexel also imagines ideal readers to be swayed by potential scientific relevance. For instance, people who may want to become recognized for being a part of a remarkable scientific breakthrough will want to attend a school that finds itself in the center of innovation.

In retrospect, the Drexel University website expects to gain the allegiance of the audience with its influence in the community and its triumph in inventive academics. The city aspect is an accent that may be a finalizing factor for many readers based on their outlook on life in the city. Drexel makes it known that the goal is for the students to develop as individuals and succeed in their passions. They are driven to go beyond merely being engaged in class activities to apply what they learned at Drexel University to enhance the community around them. In the end, Drexel University goes beyond life on campus and individual advancement.

Response:

After learning about Drexel University’s place in the academic world, I did consider adding this school to my college list, but the main reason I would not want to go is because it is in Philidelphia and Philidelphia is not my ideal city. However, it promotes many attractive features such as its dedication to advancing knowledge and its urban location.

The absence of barriers such as money, test scores, or distance would also make me attend the school such as if it were located somewhere like New York. That is my ideal school location because I love the north, especially the New York atmosphere. I do not want to stay in Georgia for higher education so, if Drexel were in New York, I would go there, or it would be an option. I am primarily interested in attending a research university and Drexel sells its prestige in that department. This school aligns with some of my essential values in life; it promotes success, freedom, learning, and reputation. The school is focused on helping their students learn resulting in their overall success in their lives. In addition, students are offered many freedoms such as time to explore many facets of the college, participating in various experiments, and promoting student involvement. As mentioned in my analysis Drexel attached many accomplishments to their website and they are building their prominence in society and for that reason, I would want to apply to this school. Drexel University has proven to be a school worth the application because of its dedication to involving students in the betterment of the world and I want to be a part of something bigger than myself, so this school has me sold.

SAR Paper

Summary

Augustana University is a well-known private Lutheran institution in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The school serves over 2100 students from 42 states and 35 countries, and it offers over 100 majors, minors, and pre-professional specialties, as well as intense internships, study abroad, and undergraduate research within a 4-1-4 academic cycle. “Augustana University aspired to be one of America’s most outstanding church-related universities” (Augustana University “Vision”) by providing an education of permanent value that challenges the intellect, develops integrity, and integrates faith with study and service in a varied society.

Analysis

The website of Augustana University is appealing. An efficient layout technique makes critical information easily accessible to the audience. At the beginning of the website, the homepage indicates that Augustana is where students construct their future, which gives the audience a bright and sensible vision to attract their attention and choose them. The webpage uses the APATSARC rhetorical style of logos to give the audience a logical sense of reason by providing encouraging data and figures to persuade the reader that Augustana is the correct choice for their future. It also uses the large rhetorical strategy of Kairos to captivate the audience by addressing the opportunities accessible to students in need, particularly those with financial challenges, and addressing the question of why the student is doubtful about Augustana being the best choice for them. “Augustana is an actual educational value, representing an investment with significant lifetime returns” (Augustana university “Financial Assistance”).

Augustana University is a prestigious, comprehensive university linked with the Lutheran faith. However, people of all faiths are welcome to attend, demonstrating that they are welcoming and give students the freedom to have other beliefs or have a different path of religion. This illustrates that Augustana is a place where all kinds of students are accepted and are trying to make a bright future in a diverse world. Furthermore, Augustana University teaches students about various jobs and professional callings while encouraging them to choose career paths compatible with their religious and philosophical beliefs. Augustana’s fundamental goal is to provide long-term value education that challenges perceptions, promotes trust, and integrates devotion, learning, and service in a varied society( Augustana University “Home”).

Augustana University is committed to creating a learning atmosphere that welcomes people from all walks of life, encourages diversity, and honors individual needs. They want to help all students by treating them equally and ensuring that they can engage fully in all elements of the educational environment and extracurricular activities. “We use technological advance and provide accommodation to individuals with documented disabilities to fulfill our commitment of equal accessibility” (Augustana university “Accessibility Service”), which leads the audience to believe that Augustana is the right place for them and that they deserve the opportunity.

The university’s website demonstrates to the audience that they are committed to assisting students before and after admission, encouraging them to inquire about Augustana and learn more about it. Furthermore, on the homepage, there is a section for international students entitled “international program office”; it is a venue where Augustana University’s international students engage and form relationships with students from all over the globe.

For the last 160 years, Augustana has provided students with lifelong education and developed leaders and visionaries who affect every aspect of society (Augustana University “Home”). On the website, Augustana University used an excellent approach by employing the rhetorical method of Kairos to persuade students, mainly undergraduate students. There is a section titled “strategic plan; Viking bold,” which is a plan designed to lead Augustana through 2030 with a bold future for their students, demonstrating to the audience that Augustana guarantees them a lifetime education and witness to the transformative power of education over the following decades, indicating a promising commitment that elevates the students’ experience at their university.

The university evaluates applicants holistically, and the admission decision is informed by the applicant’s grade point average and academic history; additionally, the admission process is dependent on the student’s ability to positively impact the Augustana community, so a person’s performance outside of school, such as behavioral and criminal issues, affects the admission process.

Response

If I was asked whether or not I would attend Augustana University, my answer would be yes. I say this because I believe it would be an excellent fit for me and a fantastic experience. Augustana provides many options for students like me. I am an international student, and they have a strong community for students like us. This will allow me to have a good experience with people from all around the world. Another reason why I would consider Augustana is because it is located in a good area, especially for students. It will reduce distractions, allowing me to focus more on my academics.

Likewise, Augustana has a fantastic business department in which I am studying; therefore, it will have a limited number of students compared to other colleges, giving me an excellent opportunity to use all the resources available. Overall, the university is ranked in the top 100 national liberal arts colleges by US News and World Reports, as well as nationally recognized for academic excellence, graduate outcomes, and affordability, so I believe Augustana will fulfill my desire academically, socially, and financially, and therefore I would strongly consider it.

Bowdoin College (SAR) Paper.

Summary

The college of Bowdoin was founded on June 24, 1794 in Brunswick, Maine by James Bowdoin III. The most notable alumni of that college were the fourteenth president Franklin Pierce, television actor Gary Merrill, and Olympic gold medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson. The college of Bowdoin looks for and encourages students to foster joy in learning and take intellectual risks in education. It desires students to join the college so that they can graduate with the ability to engage in views in a critical manner. They hold that they appreciate the liberal arts and encourages everyone to foster its joy. Bowdoin wants the students to graduate with a mind of judgment and views of a critical manner.

Analysis
The two strategies that the website includes is Structure and Imagining Ideal Readers. Structure is how the piece of writing is formed in such a manner. In this case, the website is formed as a informational article that is split up into sections explaining their five domains of education. Their five domain include intellectual and academic, social and residential, athletic, esthic and environmental, and ethical. What the website did was that they would take each domain and give about examples of what the meaning is behind it. For example, when the website was discussing intellectual and academic, they explain the essential skills that goes along with it. They said, “the College enable students to master essential quantitative and writing skills and skills of oral communication, with the guidance of faculty, other professionals, and qualified student peers” (The Mission of the College, 2022).

There are plenty of information that is structured in that type of manner and they go into thorough detail of why these skill sets are important. What they also do with Structure is that they have divided each topic into their own separate page. There are different pages that explain the Offer of the College, The Mission of the College, and Bowdoin and the Environment. The reason for this is that it works as a guide to students who want to understand what they are enrolling into. That is how the website uses  one of the parts of the strategy of Structure into their website. There is another part of the website that uses structure in another way.

What they also use in their Structure strategy, is that they use quotes from a variety of educators who have been in the Bowdoin area. The quotes are by educators of Bowdoin such as William Dewitt Hyde and Joseph McKeen. These quotes are often used as support to their topics. One of the quotes that was said “To lose yourself in generous enthusiasms and cooperate with others for common ends . . . ; this is the offer of the College” (President William DeWitt Hyde, 1903). This quote puts a strong emphasis on what the college can offer to anyone who is trying to enroll. The structure of the quotes are often used in a sentence as it continues to follow the point of the topic. Some of the quotes have a meaning behind them such as the quote,  “count Nature a familiar acquaintance,” (The Mission of the College, 2022). The meaning to that quote is that when you are student or educator at Bowdoin college, you have the need to preserve the ecosystem. That is how the website adds everything to the Structure strategy into their writing.

The second strategy that the website uses is Imagining Ideal Readers. Imagining Ideal Readers is strategy that utilizes in the readers who are reading an article and gives the right context to said readers. In this case, the ideal readers are the people who are interested into joining Bowdoin college and the article is giving out the information that is just right for them. An example of this is the wording of their statements to make sure the readers know what is expected. What they do is that they would put in information about the college and they would word it as a essay while it’s still formatted as an article. That way the writing can be easy to interpret. Another example of Imagining Ideal Readers is how the writing can be based on a person. This person could be an alumni who graduated or an educator who has been there for quite some years. For example, they often talk about the educators, mainly President Willam DeWittt Hyde, into the writing almost as if he was telling everyone how to adapt to the college life at Bowdoin. It really brings everyone captivated when reading the website. That is how the website implements the second strategy of Imagining Ideal Readers.

Response
I would say that I’m not much of a fit to be at the Bowdoin College. The reason that I would say this is that it’s a little too far away from my home and I don’t think I could meet up with all those expectations for the students. The expectation are showing that students should really be part of the liberal arts and I’m not a particular fan of those kinds of arts. Granted, it includes theatre arts, but it goes a little too far past that point. It goes to the point of doing everything for the college such as protect its ecosystem and have a special gifts of social and geographical skills. It’s a little too much ask if you tell me. Another reason why I don’t think I’m fit to be at Bowdoin College is that it is way too far for me. I’m better off being next to my home and family rather than be off to Maine. Bowdoin College may be a nice and pleasant college, but I would rather stick with my state and current college that I am attending. The last thing that I have to say about Bowdoin College is that it’s acceptance rate is by 9.2%. It is very low acceptance for anyone who’s trying to join the college. Since it is a private college, I would make sense why it is very hard to get accepted into it. The GPA requirement is 3.93 or higher and you should a score of 1510 in SAT and a score of 34 in ACT. That college is truly looking for people who can actually go above average or excel with an academic gift of learning. Those are the manny reasons why I think Bowdoin College isn’t the college for me.

Analysis

Colorado State University is a great example of the rhetorical strategies of Audience and Imaging the ideal reader. Colorado state does a great job on persuading the type of students they want at their school and what a college should look like. When students are applying for colleges, they want something that provides them with what they need to start their career path and what their four-year plan should consist of while staying at Colorado State University. Their target audience would be students who are very social and willing to participate in school activities and have a plan on what their life will be like when being accepted into Colorado State University.

The target audience which are transfers and undergrad students are looking for a school that provides them with technical science, and business careers. According to the Colorado state university website it says “exploring Colorado” (CSU, Home page ). This gives students a chance to research their passions and what students are looking for to see if this school and what it offers is the best pick for. According to the Colorado state website there’s an icon titled “Engagements” (CSU, Engagements). They also allow you to look up certain clubs and programs that help the college and outside community develop social skills that help the environment. This allows students to participate in activities that involve school to help the environment, and to get the community involved.

Colorado State University does an excellent job using the rhetorical strategy Imaging the Ideal Reader by grabbing the student’s attention when opening the website. According to Colorado State university they show students getting involved in these curricular activities and other partakes in the student life that shows how the school functions (CSU, Homepage). This demonstrates what audience they persuade that want to apply for their college. According to Colorado State University in the “Academics” icon they have where you can do more research on a certain passion you may have or that can be like what a student may be looking for in their career choice (CSU, Academics).  When Students are looking for a career, they are looking for they want to know what exactly they are going to be studying, in this case if a student wants to know more about what they’re going to be learning. That’s why it’s great that Colorado State provides that type of research for students, so they’ll know what they’ll be studying for the next four years of their career.

Colorado State attracts its students more on the social side of college because at times students are going to need that social aspect in college. According to Colorado State University, they have an athletics program where they show the different sports, spirit weeks, times, and dates for the games, and some of the highlights from certain sports teams to show their achievements they’ve accomplished (CSU, Athletics). Majority of the students that want to attend colleges look for schools who have an athletics program, so that students can be involved with their school more often. Since this college focuses on the environment and how to help the community more, they want people to be involved in these activities. According to Colorado state university they have community outreaches to help out by taking care of the environment in the community, and learning new things that can help those students who are developing their career or even beginning their career ( CSU, Economics and community outreach).these outreaches were so that students could help out the community, but also the community could help them in return by holding fundraisers for certain clubs that consist or a student’s career choice or curricular activities.

When students are looking for schools, they want a university that will accommodate their needs and services to what this school has to offer. Students at Colorado State University can benefit off the thorough research that they allow students to access when looking for their “passion”. Knowing there are colleges that just let you pick a career without knowing what students are studying. Luckly Colorado state wants students to keep “Charging Forward”.

Response

I would consider going to Colorado state university because this college would allow me to be a more social college student. By encouraging me to get involved with my school and to become more social instead of staying to myself. During our free writing professor Weaver asked us what other colleges we would have gone to besides Georgia state university and my response was Southern University and Hbcu located in Baton Rouge, Louisiana because of the social events for business students and African American like myself to connect with others that would benefit my career choice. Because I feel like when it comes to college that will best suit me, I want to find as much diversity and similarities and possible to get different takes on the different aspects of other people’s lives.

I like the fact that they call their careers “passions “because whatever I want to pursue in my life or whatever I’m gifted in that is a passion, what I initially have an equipped love for. A lot of colleges were more strictly focused on your career and felt like an in and out process to just get what you came for and go. When in my college experience I prefer to have a more social aspect of it because I’m more of a social person that doesn’t want to be kept from any opportunity that some colleges may not have for me, even though the goal is to be connected as much as possible

summary

Vanderbilt University is a private research university in Nashville, Tennessee, founded in 1873 that was named after shipping and rail mogul Cornelius Vanderbilt.  It is a nationally and internationally known center for intellectual research, informed and innovative teaching, and service to the community and society. Since its founding in 1873 as an institution dedicated to “strengthening the relationships which should exist between all portions of our common country,” Vanderbilt University has maintained a tradition of academic accomplishment intertwined with a distinct culture of collaboration and collegiality.

Analysis

Audience and Imagining ideal readers would greet a first-time visitor to the Vanderbilt University website. The university does not target a single audience, but rather a diverse group of students from various backgrounds who plan to attend this university. They have ideal readers in mind that they attempt to reach. Vanderbilts website captivates viewers by using the rhetorical style of logos to generate more interest in beneficial techniques to capture viewers and inspire them to think about the future decision they are going to make. This is the statement they use to welcome first-time viewers to their website “This is a community of learning dedicated to the fulfillment of human potential. This is Vanderbilt.”(Vanderbilt).

The use of intended readers as a rhetorical technique by Vanderbilt is a useful approach to structure the website in order to target the community they intended to recruit, which was mainly undergraduates, transfer students, and master’s students. The University is concerned with more than simply higher education; it also has a sporting facility and cutting-edge laboratories. They also allow students to seek specific clubs and activities that aid in the development of social skills that benefit the environment at both the institution and the wider community(Vanderbilt, about). This allows students to participate in school-based activities that benefit the environment and include the community. The Imagining Ideal Readers that the school seeks are students exploring various career options at the University, which includes ten schools and colleges covering everything from humanities to music to engineering.

The goal of Vanderbilt is to serve the local and worldwide communities as a center for academic research and informed creative education. With the same depth of soul and audacity of imagination. Its acceptance rate is 9.6 percent (Vanderbilt, admissions). This means that just 10 out of a hundred submissions are approved. This demonstrates that the institution is extremely selective. Vanderbilt does not utilize standardized tests or grade point average restrictions since they have a comprehensive admissions process. They examine all aspects of the application, not just academic profiles, to learn about the applicant’s passions, accomplishments, and interests, both academic and non-academic. Applicants can use Common App, QuestBridge, or the Coalition for Access, Affordability, and Success to submit their applications, as long as they select the application system that is appropriate for them. While there are numerous aspects to consider while submitting a college application, candidates should focus on the following: GPA standards, SAT and ACT testing requirements, a personal essay, and a letter of recommendation. (Vanderbilt, admissions)

Transfer students, on the other hand, come to Vanderbilt from all around the United States and internationally. While their backgrounds differ, Vanderbilt transfers are united by a desire to take advantage of the many academic and co-curricular possibilities available at their new school. Our transfer students’ unique stories help to make the Vanderbilt community a vibrant and varied environment to learn and flourish(Vanderbilt, admissions). In terms of housing, Vanderbilt has With 30 residence halls, 18 dining places, more than 475 interest clubs, 35+ club and varsity teams, and the whole city of Nashville right in our backyard, Vanderbilt students have nearly unlimited chances to establish community, uncover their interests, and make a difference(Vanderbilt, campus life).

To enlighten, the author considers their ideal reader to be persuaded to join by allowing past and current students as well as faculty to describe their stay at the institution on the Academics page of the website, stating their contribution to many disciplines of their community, and by assuring their ideal student by emphasizing how much guidance and encouragement this university offer and will continue to provide to all students and can help them achieve their goals. The website  also offers a reference at the bottom of the page for the ideal reader to locate the university’s social media and interact with other students, as well as stay up to date on campus news

Response

If the opportunity came, would I accept an offer to attend this university? Yes, anyone who wants to open a decent door for their future wouldn’t want to miss out on the chance to enroll in this university because it is dedicated to providing a clear professional path for its students while also going above and beyond in providing you with the opportunity to be challenged and succeed in your field. The institution is more prestigious than most other universities in the South in terms of history and academic standing. Having a Vanderbilt degree can seem great on resumes when you need to display your qualifications when searching for a job. On the other hand, being social is an important aspect of student life, and Vanderbilt is a diverse campus with many opportunities to engage! Last but not least, Vanderbilt has a great reputation.
