Academic for Cherysh

Cherysh academic character is many things, besides many things that are not, and many things Cherysh wants them to be. Let’s start going back to preschool. Cherysh in my heart has never accepted anything below average AB. Things changed once she went to middle school and high school. Cherysh still received something below the average B in middle school, but some subjects demanded more attention than others. Subjects like math and science were always at A level or at least a high B average. The topics that required more attention were history and grammar. She was never interested in history; The subjects did not catch her eye as quickly as mathematics or science. The rules, in her opinion, would have understood the concept better if the material had not been divided recklessly. She felt that much of the material during her pre-kindergarten through sixth-grade years had been given to her in a hurry. Cherysh developed this mindset that Cherysh wanted her materials to be given to her in a quick way and expected to be able to keep and produce them again in the same way. Doing so, I believe helped with the habits she developed in the later years of her academic career. Although this process helped her, during high school and she was still able to manage her average AB, it became more difficult as she started taking AP classes and career path courses to improve herself when she was ready to enter college. Average AB faltered a little, but she still tingled when she saw her report cards. But she maintained a 3.6 GPA when she graduated from high school. Once she got into college, she wouldn’t have said it was a completely different ball game but an adjustment. An edit I’m not quite for. The first year, she successfully pierced the skin of her teeth, but once the second year passed, she was in a rabbit hole she couldn’t see her way out of. During her sophomore year, she also got a full-time job to help pay bills and help pay school fees. The second year of life was a slippery slope for her. All the while, Covid had just hit the shores of the United States, and now colleges were sending students home as Covid was hitting the campus floor. It all happened in 2020. Once her two universities sent an email that all students had to leave campus to be safe to return, she packed her bags and started online classes. As the year 2020 fades into 2021, she realizes she can improve herself academically if she stays at home. So, I decided to try online classes. And so, I moved to Georgia. It was probably one of the best decisions he could have made. In conclusion, her academic self is accustomed to learning at a fast pace from past experiences, but she has learned that for her to give her best, it will take time and she makes time to do so. Something I’ve Learned About Self When you get into the groove of searching, reading, choosing, or whatever task that requires it to do, she finds herself doing more than that. It’s almost like instinct. This lets her know that she has the strength to be the best; She just needs to take the time to do it, to be the best academic personality that she can be.

Edward Parker Helms Academic Profile

The subject of my “interview” is Edward Parker Helms (Ed Helms) who was born on January 24, 1974, in Atlanta, Georgia. He is an actor who is most recognized for his comedy roles. He began his career as a stand-up comedian and writer after enrolling at Oberlin College in Ohio and going on to earn a B.A (Bachelor of Arts degree) in 1996 in film theory and technology. Furthermore, he also

started recording voice-over snippets, which inspired him to chase an acting career. The television programs ‘The Daily Show,’ ‘The Office,’ and the movie trilogy ‘The Hangover,’ are among his most well-known works.

In his speech, he mentioned overcoming his obstacles and fears and learning how to analyze those fears gave him that amazing opportunity that he’d been searching for this whole time. “But to understand why fear is a good. One has to stop viewing fear as a feeling emotion or behavioral command and start looking at it simply as information.” (Helms) Ed used that fear to explore his curiosity even further. He described it almost as a “spirit guide” that had helped him move into the right path; this can also be applied to a student. Whether it be having that fear of failing a class or getting a bad grade on an exam, those fears should be a motivation to do better and try harder. “And just as before, fear actually helped me out. I had recordings of those stand-up sets and I was terrified to listen to them, but I did, and I heard the subtlest variations in my timing. I heard noise in the room that changed energy, I heard details and I made adjustments and I got better, much better and I never would have if I hadn’t bombed in the first place and if fear wasn’t there to point out exactly where I needed to focus.” (Helms) Looking at this from a student’s point of view, recognizing what went wrong in an exam or assignment and going back to that material is one way that students can better and strengthen their insight.

He also talks about how the first time that he wasn’t successful in his comedy act, he was hard on himself; telling himself that he was a “failure” and he humiliated himself. This can be interpreted as a student; getting bad grades takes a toll on individuals and wonder if any of the time put into studying was even worth it. Those bad grades can drag students down badly and it’s difficult to boost it once again.

Life is all about learning and adjusting. I’ve learnt that failing could lead to prosperity, and I’m going to strive to use my “failures” to better my skills and knowledge. Using Ed’s example, I hope that fear becomes a spirit guide for me and pushes me to success. I also like how Ed makes jokes throughout his speech, creating a lighter environment for the students and administrators. It made me feel comfortable and at ease.

Say Hello to Axel

The person I interviewed is a classmate of mine named Axel Gordillo. He has been in Georgia State University for one full semester. He began right after graduating high school, the reason being ambition. Because of his need for close proximity to home, he takes classes from the Clarkston campus of Gsu, majoring in Business administration. He aspires to own his own construction company in the future with the knowledge and opportunities he gains in school.

Through multiple casual face to face meetings, as well as text, we discussed how one considers their academic self;  and have come to understand how it is both a reflection of their personality, as well as their self-awareness of how they function in a school setting.

The three words that Axel chose to reflect his academic self are adaptable, well-behaved, and determined.

He chose adaptable due to a previous experience in his sophomore year of high school. He began to fail geometry, and in order to pass, he had to adapt to a new study format. By taking more time for studying, and staying after school for tutoring, he adapted his schedule to his needs in school, brought his time and attention to his classes, and improved his grade.

Axel was not one to cause trouble in high school, and typically kept to himself. His well-behavedness was decided as an understood but important personality trait in school.

Determined was his third due to his willingness to complete his senior year off strong. In the midst of virtual learning, it was imperative for him to stay ahead of due assignments and zoom meetings. He succeeded and graduated. His determination showed sucess past high school and into his first semester in college, as he earned president’s list for his academic acheivements.

Overall, his experiences in high school, as well as his first semester in GSU have prepared him for his future years in college. Upon asking him how, he stated that they prepared him by showing him what to expect. His first semester taught him that there’s a decent amount of work to do, and that it isn’t like high school. It also taught him that college teachers aren’t how people make them out to be. He realized that they aren’t mean, they’re actually nice and helpful, and it taught him that he can talk to them it he needs help, and not feel as if they may give him a bad reaction.

Getting To Know Gal Bornstein’s Academic Self

Getting To Know Gal Bornstein’s Academic Self

Gal is a student at GSU perimeter college who is majoring in health science with the intention of going into nursing. He got most of his education in Savana, GA. K-12 Gal was a committed student and had good grades, but after finishing high school, instead of going straight to college like the majority of us, he found a different path for himself as a chef (which to be honest, I found amazing). After working as a chef for five years, he realized he was not enjoying it as much as he used to and knew he had to make a career change. “I didn’t enjoy cooking for the rich,” Gal said as I was interviewing him. Being a chef was what really influenced and pushed him to go back to school. After his career as a chef, he was motivated to start school, but this time with the work ethic he had learned during his time as a chef, which is greatly benefiting him.

Gal is academically motivated, committed, and patient enough to see this through. He is quite proud of his academic ability to remain focused and complete the task at hand, even when he does not enjoy or want to do it. It is Gal’s second semester at GSU, and he chose to attend this school because he planned on getting into an associate nursing program, and there were none in Savannah, but he also saw it as a fresh start, a new opportunity to get to know different people and have something new in his life. His favorite read was “COVID-ERA College: Are Students Satisfied?” He hated chemistry in high school, but now it turned out to be his favorite subject. He has also found a new appreciation for math and science.

Isatu’s Academic Profile

                              Isatu’s Academic Profile

This essay is an introduction of Isatu Diallo and her academic self based off an interview and texts. Isatu is 20 years old and has spent all of k-12 in Georgia. She started college in the fall of 2020, and this is her 4th semester/ 2nd year at Georgia State University which she attends because it was one of her top school picks and she got accepted. Right after high school, Isatu started college because she did not want to wait long after and if she did wait long, she wouldn’t have wanted to go to college, and Isatu didn’t want that. Isatu is currently enrolled in Biology, Ethics, English, and Human communication. She doesn’t have a particular favorite subject, but she likes Biology. She is majoring in nursing and her career goals are to be a travel nurse and to have her own business.

The three words Isatu described her academic self as are determined, open minded, and hardworking. Isatu challenges her thinking by trying to understand her mistakes, and she’s willing to make changes which helps her move forward. She’s determined to achieve higher grades this semester, advance her learning in the classroom and make herself better as a student. She is openminded to different opportunities, willing to work with others and understand new ideas and experiences. (Diallo)

One thing that frustrates Isatu about college is the amount of work, and how it can be overwhelming. In high school, Isatu mentioned that she wasn’t very hardworking and open minded, and that she missed out on alot of things and was failing her classes because of that. But she knew that if she kept going down this way she wouldn’t have been able to succeed so she started working on herself and took ownership of her hard work. (Diallo)

Isatu is a hardworking and determined student, who goes above and beyond to be creative, and is always looking for ways to better herself as a student. The person that she is now is because of the many obstacles she had to overcome, which is why one thing about her academic self that she is proud of is that she’s putting in more work to try harder at school. Isatu’s profile has led me to think about, if students lack motivation to be productive and complete assignments, will the thought of failing classes be enough to change their academic self in order to succeed?

“Academic Profile”: Isaiah Bankston

Hi, everyone. I would like to introduce you to Isaiah Bankston, an 18-year-old current high school student that is taking dual enrollment classes at Georgia State University’s perimeter college at the same time. He has lived in Georgia all his life. When asked about his k-12 experience he responded with, “I went to a predominately black elementary school and had a lot of diversity through middle and high school.” As I asked him how his education was in school, he responded, “I kind of walked with a sense of entitlement since I was always put in advanced classes but of course I was hit with a reality check when I got to college”. He knew he had to improve his academic self when he saw the transition between high school and college. He chooses Georgia State University because, in his opinion, it is a reliable school for finding a job in the future.

Isaiah’s academic self can be described in three words: spontaneous, creative, and disorderly. His creative and spontaneous self-expression serves as valuable tools to his success; however, his disorderly interferes and makes his life a little more difficult. He realized that his academic self and normal self have merged and become part of his life. His academic journey has not always been easy. He has faced anxiety due to his need to focus on both high school and college classwork and procrastination. His academic self is growing every day, and he has realized that he is truly capable of achieving many successes as his academic self.

Since entering Dual Enrollment last semester, Isaiah has made remarkable academic progress. He used to be someone who would procrastinate a lot and put things off until the last minute before college. But, after getting his first zero in college, he realized he had to stop procrastinating and get his work done. In college, he has missed a few assignments, but not as many as he did in high school, which is a positive sign because he knows that college requires more of his time. This is a clear example of why it is never too late to make positive changes to your academic mindset. However, he explained, “I learned very quickly the importance of knowing due dates and meeting them ahead of time.” He knew once he got in college that it was not the same as high school, which is why he is improving himself everyday by staying up to date and not procrastinating.

Isaiah Bankston is a dedicated person/student because he is currently in his senior year of high school. He has a job and is doing dual enrollment in Georgia State University’s perimeter college all at the same time which is admirable. This is something that is challenging to do all at once, so it shows that Isaiah is capable of achieving anything he sets his mind to. Isaiah is a student who is trying to improve himself every day in order to make his academic self even better. He stated, “While I still have room to improve, I hope that I can look back on this year and see major growth”. Therefore, if you ever doubt yourself, just remember that there is always room for improvement.

Meet Kiara!

About my partner, Kiara, she had gone through her own academic experience. Back in high school, she had to go through the new school system, which was virtual learning, because the pandemic had taken place. Therefore, she and all other students had no other choice but to adapt to the new alternative system of learning. It was not an easy road for Kiara, for she had to get situated in this new style of learning by getting organized and keeping up in time management. But through all of that, she continued to stay positive, balanced, and determined in order to fulfill her goals of getting good grades and passing her classes. And she did just that, which is outstanding.

Kiara is, currently, attending Georgia state university to pursue her career in criminal justice. She chose Georgia state because the community is better than some other colleges like HBCU, which was another option that she could have attended. In addition to GSU, the school gave her more opportunities to stay focused.  So, as Kiara is attending GSU, she can get her work done and do whatever else that she wants to do such as work or even go to any social events in a timely manner. The reason for this statement is because Kiara realized that if she attended HBCU, she would not have been able to focus on her priorities, therefore, it would negatively affect her performance in school. So, by making the right decision for herself, Kiara has maintained a balanced lifestyle with her personal life and her academics.

Determination is another key factor that Kiara uses to describe her academic self. When it comes to learning, she does whatever it takes to make sure that she understands any material in all aspects. Kiara could not settle for less, so whether if it is to set up meeting times with the professor, to attend any free tutoring classes for help, or even to study in a group with her friends in the library, she has that level of determination in order to succeed. Kiara really understood the concept of dealing with challenges in order to improve. In addition, she knows to plan ahead, which is very important for not just school, but for every single opportunity that is given in life.

Negativity is not a good trait that one must have in his or her life. Therefore, Kiara made sure that she did not include negativity in hers. She is all about positivity, for that is where you really benefit from in life. When you really think about it, what is the point of being negative? What does it do for you? It does not do anything good for you, so there is no need for anybody to portray such a bad habit. Kiara states, “I learned to stay positive because if you are always negative and have bad frequencies around you, it starts to rub off on you and you are just not going to get anything done.”

Ultimately, Kiara has improved, drastically, with her academic self. She, indeed, had to overcome past obstacles to get to where she is at right now, but that is what made her into the person that she is now. If there is one thing that Kiara is proud about with her academic self, that one thing is that she was able to improve academically, and she is also able to take advantage of her time and resources.

Kayla: academic profile

This is an academic profile on Kayla, a classmate in my English class as well as a freshman at Georgia state university. Like most of her classmates, Kayla has been at GSU for one semester. Kayla was born in Georgia, and she went to Browns mill elementary school from kindergarten to 5th grade. She then went to tapestry public charter school from 6th to 12th grade and as soon as she graduated, she enrolled at GSU. Kayla enrolled at GSU as soon as she graduated because it was either that or getting a job. She chose the Clarkston campus at GSU because it was more cost-friendly. She intends to major in engineering and her long-term goal is to set up a research and development site in Atlanta.

She will achieve her goal through her academic skills and the three words she chose to describe her academic self were creative, attentive, and resourceful.

She chose creative as her first word because of her interest in art. Kayla likes to apply her creative artistic lens in any assignment she does. Her second word, attentive, was chosen because it describes Kayla’s focus in her classes. She never caused commotions but instead took detailed notes in class and made sure to be mindful of upcoming assignments. She also chose resourceful because even though she wasn’t the best student she still tried to improve in areas that needed help. She took advantage of tutoring opportunities whenever she did poorly on a test and made sure to speak to teachers if she needed help. If what she was looking for couldn’t be found at school, then she searched the internet and took notes on what she found.

Kayla feels that her past experiences have prepared her for future semesters in college by teaching her to work hard and use any resources available. Her high school teacher was unorthodox in the way that she taught so it showed Kayla irregular and creative ways to learn and interact with teachers. This experience helped her to connect with professors in college which she assumed would be hard due to the popular notion that professors aren’t easy to talk to.

Kayla’s influence is her family members, and she will pursue her goal and achieve it by putting lessons taught in class like the study myths video to use which demonstrate common mistakes people do when studying. She is proud of her natural talent in math. In the end, Kayla is an attentive, hardworking student with hopes of setting up a site in Atlanta to help people.

Academic Profile: Ayanna Cade

This essay is a transcript of an interview that was conducted during the weekend about an Academic Profile. The interview that I had to organize was with my partner, Ayanna Cade. This interview was of Ayanna telling what was her academic self during grade school to college. Her academic self started as soon as she started her education. She went to Rock Chapel Elementary for Kindergarten through 5th grade, Lithonia Middle for 6th through 7th, and Shiloh High School for 9th through 12th. After Kindergarten through 12th grade, Ayanna went straight to college for the reason of wanting to graduate as fast as possible.

Ayanna has been to GSU for about a whole year. The reason that she chose GSU was and I quote, “I had a feeling that it was the school for me. I wanted to stay close to home because I didn’t want to be far away from my family and I didn’t want to pay for housing.” She will be getting her associates degree in Nursing at the perimeter college and will soon get an accelerated Bsn at the Atlanta Campus. The biggest influence of her academic self would be her father figure. Ayanna states, “Whenever I’m down or stressed from college, he always reassures me that I am smart and capable of anything.” Her father figure always motivates her and prepares her to be her best academic self. The few things that Ayanna is proud about her academic self is that she is more productive, more organized, and she doesn’t procrastinate anymore.

The frustrating thing about college for Ayanna is Advisement. This is actually a common subject that Ayanna and I share. She claimed that Advisement recommended her to take summer classes and what classes she needed to take for Nursing. Another thing that Ayanna finds frustrating in college is the workload given by professors. She told me that most professors don’t care about your personal life issues and they only care about if you turn in your work. Ayanna’s favorite video from our class time is “How to Studying: Part 5 of 5.” That video taught her a lot of information about studying tips, do’s and don’ts, and different ways to raise your grade. She didn’t have a particular reading that she favored but the video was her only interest. The last thing she told me was about her favorite subject. Her favorite subjects that she loves to learn is American Government and Health Science. Health Science is her favorite since she is a major in Nursing and American Government is for learning about our government and politics. This is the profile of Ayanna Cade, who is a brilliant student of GSU of Clarkston Campus.

Meet Amayah Jones

I had very interesting conversations with my Profile Partner about our Academic Self topic.  She is a very friendly and kind person. Her name is Amayah Jones – an 11th grader and freshman at GSU. Before that, Amayah attended K-4 in Miami, then she moved on to New York and eventually moved to Georgia. Amayah is currently in Early College or dual enrollment program because her school is connected to this GSU campus. Her major is Biology. As far as I know, she will go back to College right after graduating from K-12. Surgeon is her career goal because she loves science.

Photo of Amayah Jones taken by her mother

She said that her three “academic self” words are: Determined, Resilient and Eager. Through these 3 words, I believe that she is a hard-working student and always tries her best in studying. One of Amayah’s most frustrating things about college is difficult professors . But I believe that she is a person who is determined to study no matter what. As far as I know, Amayah has made the Dean’s list recently. That proves she is a hard-working student and very self-disciplined in learning. One thing she is proud of with her academic self is her drive. She works towards learning and getting good grades no matter the obstacles.

Like other students, Amayah also has a mentor who has a profound influence on her academic self. That is her mother. Amayah’s mom is her biggest influence. She can talk to her about anything and inspires her to be great. She has a master’s in business and is an author as well as a realtor. That is the reason why Amayah studies so well and always tries her best. Her mom is such a wonderful and talented person. Amayah also said that she really wants to be as determined as her mother.

Her favorite reading so far was College is creating poverty. I think this video is really interesting as it talks about another aspect of going to College. The new economics of college are creating poverty. Hunger, even homelessness, are holding students back. Higher education finance must be rethought so students aren’t punished for pursuing education.

Thus, I think a College student needs to have determined, resilient and eager like her. Those are the factors that help us succeed in our academic self.  After the interview, I learned a lot of useful things from her.
