Introduction:

Anxiety is one of the most common issues in college, especially for first-year students. College can be a challenging and stressful experience both personally and academically, which is why it is so important to address what is causing anxiety. Understanding what causes first year college students to suffer from anxiety is important because Mental Health is a topic that deserves more discussion to find more solutions. By addressing this problem, first-year students will have a more positive college experience, and hopefully more colleges will start discussing what causes anxiety and how to handle it.

Discussion:

In this article, “Work-life balance as a predictor of college student anxiety and depression,” by Justin M. Sprung and Anna Rogers, they talk about how anxiety is one of the most common mental health issues among first-year students. Many colleges have reported a rise in the number of students seeking mental health services. For example, they state that “College represents a highly demanding experience for students both personally and academically.” (Justin M. Sprung, 2021). Most students are under a lot of pressure to get good grades, but they also have to keep up with personal things outside of school, such as work and family obligations.

Justin M. Sprung and Anna Rogers also talk about how college is the time where students make their transition from adolescence to adulthood. For example, the authors state that “Between ages 18-25, individuals learn to become self-sufficient and make independent decisions regarding their life and their future.”(Justin M. Sprung and Anna Rogers, 2021).In other words, Students are not only working towards a degree, they are also searching for their identity.

Anxiety is most common among young adults. An article titled, “Third of First Year University Students Have Moderate to Severe Depression/Anxiety.” by Nleeson talks about how Transitioning to university life occurs at the same time as the peak period for mental illnesses, which begins in young adulthood. As part of this article, a researcher named Drew conducted a survey asking students what their main reasons are for getting anxiety. The article stated that “Respondents potentially influential factors were parental education; early life adversity, such as divorce and sexual/physical/emotional abuse; and lifetime occurrence of mood and anxiety disorders.” ( Nleeson, 2021). Having family issues like parents’ divorces can distract a student in college.

Students were also asked what helps them not to be anxious as much. The researcher Drew, found that, “socializing and getting involved in student clubs, societies, and sports teams is linked to lower odds of developing significant symptoms as well as boosting the recovery of those who already have symptoms of depression or anxiety.” (Drew, 2021). This suggests that students who are more involved in their college or university life, such as joining clubs, will have less anxiety. This is because they have a better time adjusting to socializing.

In this article, “Family Members’ Expectations for Involvement with Their First-Year College Students.” by Phyllis Zajack, it talks about how family has an impact on first- year college students. It is well known that family members are being more involved with their adolescents on college campuses. In this study, family members were asked to describe their expectations for involvement with their first-year college students. According to the study, “Mothers and fathers expect to have less influence over their students in college than in high school.” (Phyllis Zajack, 2004). This is because they are encouraging their teenager’s independence as they grow older.

First-year college students are used to having their parents help them out. College is different because students do not have their parents with them, so they must consult other people for guidance and help. Asking for help can cause anxiety because first-year students are anxious individuals who are afraid of the unknown. There are ways First-year college students can reduce anxiety. The article, “Anxiety in college students”, by North Central college, talks about what causes anxiety. For example, they state that, “College frequently causes overwhelming anxiety because it’s so new and different from any life experience before it, and students’ minds are overloaded.” (North Central College, 2020). Not knowing what will happen will make students’ minds fill in the gaps by overthinking which will cause students to get overwhelmed and stressed.

North Central College also talks about some helpful ways college students can reduce anxiety. For example, North Central College states that it’s important to “Take care of your physical health. This includes getting enough sleep, eating well, drinking water, exercising, relaxing, and attending medical and dental appointments.” (North Central College website). Taking care of physical health is important because that can make you feel good about yourself. North Central College also states that students should: “Take technology breaks. Develop awareness of how technology use makes you feel, from comparing yourself to others on social media to playing games to avoid responsibilities.” (North Central College website, 2020). Instead of comparing themselves with other people online, students should disconnect from technology and focus on getting their work done.

In conclusion, there are many reasons why first-year college students have anxiety and there are many ways to reduce it. For example, one of those reasons is that students must deal with both their academic and personal life. Students’ academic and personal life are both as important, so they have to find a way to balance both. College is a time where students must discover what they want to do in the future by discovering who they are. North Central College website stated that, “anxious people often are afraid of the unknown.” (North Central College- Website 2020). It is common for first-year college students to feel anxious because this is their first time in a place where they don’t know how things work.

However, there are several ways for first-year college students to reduce anxiety. A great way students can reduce anxiety is to practice positive affirmations daily. For example, North central college stated that, “One way to combat negative thinking is by practicing affirmations such as “I can handle this” or “I am good enough.” (North Central College- Website). It is important for students to know they are capable of doing anything they set their minds to. Students often experience overwhelming anxiety in college because the experience is so new and different from previous life experiences. Keeping a student’s mind in a state where it is always working to keep them protected is something they should be thankful for. So, students can spend more time anticipating life’s best moments.

Summary:

Founded in 1902, Fort Hays State is a public university located in Kansas, United States. FHSU is a large regional public university whose education and staff are dedicated to teaching and mentoring students with programs and resources. FHSU is looking for students who show to do good in school. 95% of students at FHSU secure jobs or higher education opportunities, which is an example of logos, since they use logical reasoning.  FHSU website also uses “Imagining Ideal Readers,” because based on their requirements they imagine students who demonstrate academic success applying to their school.

Analysis:

Fort Hays State University strives to have students who achieve academic success. They are looking for students who have proven themselves to be dedicated workers in school and who will continue to do so. The requirements prospective students need to have is a GPA of 2.25 or higher and a minimum ACT test score of 21 or higher and an SAT score of 1080 or higher. And their cost of attendance for Kansas residents is $5,443.80. FHSU website has a lot of great ways and strategies to persuade prospective students to attend their university. One of the ways they persuade students to go to their school is by using the APATSARC strategy, Logos. For example, in their website it states that “A remarkable 95% of FHSU students secure jobs or higher education opportunities after they graduate” (FHSU- About page,2022). Which is a great piece of evidence that uses logical reasoning to persuade students that there is a good chance that they will get a decent job opportunity once they graduate from FHSU.

Fort Hays State University also used logos when they stated that “$59 million in financial aid is awarded is awarded annually”(FHSU- Academics page, 2022). Which is a way of convincing prospective students that they will most likely get financial assistance. One of the requirements on the website is, “Have a cumulative GPA of 2.25 or higher on a scale of 4.00″ (FHSU- Admissions page, 2022). Which means that students who visit the FHSU website and have a 2.25 GPA or higher are more likely to be persuaded to apply. Another strategy Fort Hays State University uses “Imagining ideal readers” to persuade prospective students because when they wrote about the requirements, they knew that the prospective students reading them were either going to be affected or persuaded by the requirements needed.

FHSU also states that “Fort Hays State University is proud to offer an immersive, advanced education to hard-working individuals who wish to grow their opportunities for tomorrow” (FHSU-Academics home page, 2022). FHSU was thinking about prospective students who know that they do good academically and show effort that they do work hard in school. And a student who has the ideal required ACT/SAT scores, which can be used to help them with scholarship awards, are likely to be persuaded as well. Since students can get scholarships that can help them financially just because they do well on their test scores. On the other hand, students who do not meet that GPA requirement are most likely to be affected when applying to FHSU because they will be upset that they have a disadvantage when it comes to applying.

Fort Hays State University also has a section in their website called “Success Stories,” that shows their graduates stories and their experiences at FHSU. For example, they interviewed a girl named Remington that graduated in 2019 and they asked her “Why FHSU?” (FHSU, Success stories page). and she responds with “Not only were the professors caring, but other students and staff welcomed me as well, Fort Hays now feels like a family to me”(Remington – FHSU, Success stories page, 2018). This is an example of how their website uses a graduated student’s experience, to show prospective students that Fort Hays State University is a welcoming University that cares about their students and staff. They also asked her “What advice would you give the class of 2023?”(FHSU, Success stories page, 2018) and she responded with “Some of my best college memories came from taking classes and joining organizations that I did not initially consider”. College is a time for exploration.”(Remington – FHSU, Success stories page, 2018). The university’s website does an excellent job at persuading prospective students to apply to FHSU because this shows students how if they join the schools’ organizations, they can make the best memories of their college experience at Fort Hays State University.

Response:

I would go to Fort hays State University if it were in Georgia and if money were not an issue. I like how the University feels so welcoming through their website. FHSU has many resources to make students’ college experience easier and memorable. In addition, I meet one of their requirements, which is a 2.25 grade point average or higher. I think being in an environment where people care about your well-being is really important to me because I work better and do better. One of the most important values in my life is my well-being because I’m someone who has always struggled with stress and anxiety. So, the fact that FHSU has a Health and wellness services program to help students with their problems is what caught my attention for example FHSU states that, “We offer therapy services to help with a wide range of mental health concerns including stress, anxiety, depression, college transition, drug and alcohol use, grief, and relationship issues”( FHSU- Health and Wellness services page, 2022) Which I thought was nice, because not a lot of universities offer that kind of help, they don’t think about the challenges students have to go through.

This just shows that FHSU not only cares about their student’s education but their well-being as well. I feel like my well-being is really important for me because feeling good about myself can help me have more motivation, especially in my academic performance. I think the key to living a good life is to just be happy and healthy. Being a university/college student can be stressful, so the fact that Fort Hays State University offers help for things I struggle with, such as stress and anxiety, persuaded me to want to go there. Therefore, I would go to Fort Hays State University if it were in Georgia and if money were not an issue because it is wonderful place for students to learn. And because FHSU also prioritized their students’ well-being which is one of my most important values in life.

“Academic Profile”: Isaiah Bankston

Hi, everyone. I would like to introduce you to Isaiah Bankston, an 18-year-old current high school student that is taking dual enrollment classes at Georgia State University’s perimeter college at the same time. He has lived in Georgia all his life. When asked about his k-12 experience he responded with, “I went to a predominately black elementary school and had a lot of diversity through middle and high school.” As I asked him how his education was in school, he responded, “I kind of walked with a sense of entitlement since I was always put in advanced classes but of course I was hit with a reality check when I got to college”. He knew he had to improve his academic self when he saw the transition between high school and college. He chooses Georgia State University because, in his opinion, it is a reliable school for finding a job in the future.

Isaiah’s academic self can be described in three words: spontaneous, creative, and disorderly. His creative and spontaneous self-expression serves as valuable tools to his success; however, his disorderly interferes and makes his life a little more difficult. He realized that his academic self and normal self have merged and become part of his life. His academic journey has not always been easy. He has faced anxiety due to his need to focus on both high school and college classwork and procrastination. His academic self is growing every day, and he has realized that he is truly capable of achieving many successes as his academic self.

Since entering Dual Enrollment last semester, Isaiah has made remarkable academic progress. He used to be someone who would procrastinate a lot and put things off until the last minute before college. But, after getting his first zero in college, he realized he had to stop procrastinating and get his work done. In college, he has missed a few assignments, but not as many as he did in high school, which is a positive sign because he knows that college requires more of his time. This is a clear example of why it is never too late to make positive changes to your academic mindset. However, he explained, “I learned very quickly the importance of knowing due dates and meeting them ahead of time.” He knew once he got in college that it was not the same as high school, which is why he is improving himself everyday by staying up to date and not procrastinating.

Isaiah Bankston is a dedicated person/student because he is currently in his senior year of high school. He has a job and is doing dual enrollment in Georgia State University’s perimeter college all at the same time which is admirable. This is something that is challenging to do all at once, so it shows that Isaiah is capable of achieving anything he sets his mind to. Isaiah is a student who is trying to improve himself every day in order to make his academic self even better. He stated, “While I still have room to improve, I hope that I can look back on this year and see major growth”. Therefore, if you ever doubt yourself, just remember that there is always room for improvement.
