Should GSU Let Students Pick the Pass/Fail Option for S20?

As I mentioned on the Week 12  Wednesday video, a number of student government associations are petitioning the University System of Georgia Board of Regents (USG BOR) to let students pick the pass/fail option for this semester’s grades.

Here is a link to a recent article in the AJC about this (there are other helpful links inside that article), and here is a link to one of the petitions started by students. A number of SGAs at a number of campuses have created these petitions.

So, what do you think? Would you like the option of pass/fail this semester? Why? Why not?

**You can either reply/comment to this post, or you can create your own post. Feel free to post a vid instead of text. I’m looking forward to hearing/seeing your thoughts on this!

  1. I do think Georgia State University should consider giving the students the option of a pass/fail grade scale this semester. A sudden transfer to online classes is something never done before, and for many students it hasn’t been an easy experience. For instance, many people have kids at home or are still working, being that their job lies under being a necessity. Although some students with higher grades will have to deal with essentially getting the same “grade” as everyone else in the class, a pass/fail grade accommodates to the majority. In my opinion it is way harder to focus on my school work at home, and I haven’t been able to make it to one class lecture because I am still working. Unfortunately not all my professors are willing to work around my new schedule, and I’m sure many others feel the same. I have cousins who also go to different colleges in Georgia and they are going through the same things. It isn’t just a GSU problem, and it should be looked over throughout the whole state. Expecting students to rise to the challenge, as said in the article, is actually ridiculous. Not every student is the same and not every student can learn the same. Unfortunately, many lives are being lost right now and students and even teachers should be spending this time with their loved ones or grieving the ones that they have already lost. And for those students who do not want the pass or fail option then that is fine. That is on them but the rest of the state should not have to suffer for these students who will in the end still get a passing grade. I feel as if universities and other employers will understand the change to the pass or fail letter grade due to the circumstances.

  2. I do feel the same way as dcaballero3 and the rest of the community who trying to petition for pass/fail option too. For a long time am more used to the class room setting and making transition to home school make me have difficult time to study. Diffirent student have different background have different scenario too and many are put in disadvantage. In this hour many school of different state have allow pass/fail grade i think GSU should do it too

  3. I believe that the University System of Georgia Board of Regents should consider having a pass/fail option for students. Due to the virus pandemic, many students have had to made a sudden change, moving from a campus to an online classroom. It is a very new experience for many students and many of those students are having a hard time suddenly adjusting to this new classroom environment. In addition to having to get used to online classes, many students lack the resources they need to properly learn and be successful in academics. An example would be that a student might not have any internet access from home but were able to use the internet from their school or any public space that provided free internet, like a coffee shop or library. This does not allow those students to attain their education to the fullest education. Some students who have jobs as essential workers are working more hours to provide for their families as well s their community. This means less time for school. It is only fair that the University System of Georgia allow this students to choose to fail or pass their classes during this time because not only are they forced to adapt to online classes and possibly lack resources, but they also need to take more time to focus on the health and safety of themselves, their loved ones, and the people around them.
