In my opinion, the part that resonates with me most is when Michael Morris begins listing the challenges and risks that students may have to take because of COVID-19. When I had realized that the students who rely on working at the campus can no longer work because of closures it shocked me even more. How could students find jobs in less than a week? What if those jobs don’t “resonate” with the student’s schedule? Some students have no option but to work and study. I guess that what Michael Morris is saying about this issue that relates to “Higher Education” is that, most if not a wide majority of professors haven’t been trained in leading a class online. This tying in with the fact that we have been discussing Higher and Lower Ed throughout the semester. If I could ask Michael Morris anything I would more than likely ask “Why have teachers not been trained to teach classes online?”, And it is something that I have noticed even with some of my professors. However, our professors are not the only ones anxious about this, as said by Michael Morris (Michael Morris P.1) I think that this is a first for almost anyone. Nobody would have expected that a deadly pandemic would change their lives and the history of the world as we know it. Everyone is in a state of panic. Just life Michael Morris stated I think we should be patient. Many students have a problem learning online whether they can’t focus, or they just can’t comprehend as well in the classroom. Once the Pandemic became serious everyone who didn’t choose online classes was forced to take online classes. But then again, we, as students, are offered the chance of withdrawing. But at what cost? What if the student’s financial aid is affected? Those who can’t study as well online? This has caused a huge problem for not only the professors but mostly the students. Although most of the content in this article isn’t surprising, it was bound to happen eventually.
I think the article displayed clarity to everyone reading it because it explained what students and teachers are going through during this world changing pandemic. What resonates with me during this article is how I do believe the instructors will be extremely helpful and understanding during this hardship with the students. The professors know that going online is going to be extremely challenging when it comes to the students and themselves. Based on the student’s situation at home this could be extremely challenging on the student’s behalf because going to school sometimes can be a safe haven. Sometimes just getting out the house or being able to use the school’s tools. All those things are helpful to the student’s education. What doesn’t resonate with me in this article is the fact that if students decided to withdraw it could affect their financial aid. I think that should be waived because for some people they don’t have a suitable situation to be able to do online classes. Sean Morris had some valid points in the article that everyone is in a panic right now, and that is true so there is understanding that students should give the professors a break when it comes to them being technology savvy. The article speaks a lot about the professors and the transition for them because they haven’t trained in digital pedagogy, but this article should be more focused on the resources that are obtainable right now during this crisis. Students are going through the worst of the worst right now. I think everything should be fair at this point on both ends the instructor, and the student. This article also opened my eyes about other students’ hardships, and its just a rough time now for everyone.
I agree with a lot with what you said about how instructors will be extremely helpful and understanding during this hardship with the students. Many students must be so frustrated, beginning with the fact that this is their first time taking online classes. And with that, the students didn’t have a decision. We were practically forced into taking these classes. There are probably some students who are incredibly frustrated or even lost, worrying whether or not all of their hard work that has been done up until now has been in vain because of the fact that they’re now facing a challenging obstacle which is learning online. I think this is a very critical time in our semester where students and professors alike should be patient and understanding. This is a first experience for almost everyone and we’re all going to make mistakes.
I agree Morris did a good job challenging the risk shift that students and even professors are having to go through. When you said that you were shocked by the amount of impact this COVID-19 was having on student’s life: financially and socially. Especially when having to move home, becoming jobless, and even for some finding a new place to place to live in a short period of time. However, I do believe that Universities and Colleges should implement that ever professor learns at least some basic knowledge of online/digital learning. In the end, everyone is learning how to deal with this deadly pandemic that will be apart of history forever. Like you said previously if we all focus our attention on our loved ones and work to do our part in making the best of this situation with patience.
I agree with your statement about Morris’ article, because it explains a lot about what most students and teachers are going through during this pandemic. During this unpredicted crisis, students need more tools and need to get out of their homes and go to college, and both teacher and students are going to struggle through some things online. Morris says that both students and teachers need to be patiences with each other because it is new for both. When you said that if a student withdrawals a class it can have an impact on his/her financial aid, which I never thought about. you pointed out a good topic and it got me thinking as well.
