The two art pieces are near to my home, and they are very different in their purpose and artistic intent. The art on the mailbox displays a combination of warm and cool colors which is reminiscent of spring. It seems to be bright flowers in a pond. The art may have been created by my neighbor, and it likely occurred during a happy time in their life. There is no symmetry in the art necessary but form and shape are present. The flowers are not super detailed but the impression of the flower remains strong. The distinguishing features of the paint blotches are the subtle lines and form of the flowers. The center of the flower with lines running outward indicate pedals. The intensity of the flower on the far left, in terms of its color, help to further distinguish the form of the rest of the flowers.
The second art work is three dimensional and much more implicative of its cultural origins. The oriental temple seems to have Chinese origins based upon the style of the roof and dome. There is definite symmetry in this design, from top to bottom. The patterns in the piece are also stark. Everything appears on all four sides of the piece. The negative space in the squares help to create form where there is no “matter”. The curled corners of the roof also indicate an interesting elements of the art that makes it unique. The color is rather plain, but this may be due to the style of art and the materials used. Clay must often be baked and will turn a dull brown, and perhaps this piece remains unpainted so it can endure time.
Great observations of each work. The choice of your neighbors mailbox was creative – I imagine this causes a moment of pause for those who notice it as it’s so bright in comparison to its environment (at least in the winter). Your use and application of the vocabulary used to describe the work is very appropriate. Good job overall.
