Built Environment Analysis (Rough Draft 2)

Since slavery in America started, racism was always prevalent to our society. Blacks were treated poorly by the whites for no reason but to just to get a job done. As slavery ended, another form of it would take its place, Jim Crow Laws. These laws made sure that whites and blacks were always separated in communities. However, as the years went on and more blacks were trying to integrate, things would begin to change for these segregated communities. In our society today, the Atlanta and Metro Atlanta area is known for its diversity. Many people from different states and countries worldwide have come to Atlanta and now call it home. Diversity is a real plus for a city like Atlanta however as you go into Metro Atlanta (ex. Cobb County) there still seems to be a divide from the communities.

As we all know, there has been segregation in most southern states since the late 1800s to mid-1900s. Cobb County, a county right next to Atlanta, was also a part of these times. During segregation, the county used to be predominantly white.  However, as things began to change during civil rights movement, blacks were fighting for more opportunities. A part of this was to get better education so around the South, blacks were slowly beginning to attend white schools.  Also in the 1960s, suburbs were becoming more popular. So for Atlanta and the Metro Atlanta area, this would cause more African Americans to move to the city of Atlanta. With them moving to the city, white flight would take place as white people would move to the suburbs just for the popularity of it but so they would not have to be near black people. By the 1970s, many white people would live in Cobb County, Douglas County, and other counties that were in Metro Atlanta.

As the years went by, Cobb County would start to change as well. By the 1990s and 2000s, there would be more of a diversity in the county yet still some separation. For people that live in Cobb County now, they know that there is a difference division of races in the county. In the South Cobb area, there are mostly African Americans, Hispanics, and elders. In the West Cobb area, there are more of a mixture between whites and blacks yet it is mainly white people. In East Cobb and North Cobb, there are many whites and other small races mixed in (Asian, Europeans).  It can be said that the reason for this was because the South Cobb area is closer to Atlanta so as the black population grew in Atlanta it spread to that area as well and once again white flight took place to the northern and eastern part of the county. These changes came started to show in the 1990s and 2000s.

As the changes of county became present, many other communities and spaces were changing as well. When it came to the end of segregation, aspects of an area tended to change just like Cobb County. Even though, certain areas can be fixed (like schools and buildings), it will take time for these spaces to catch up with everyone else and change for the better.
