Annotated Bib 10 ALFI Food System

“Atlanta Local Food Initiative.” Atlanta Local Food. Atlanta Local Food Initiative, 2013. Web. 27 Mar. 2016. <http://www.atlantalocalfood.org>.

This website, created by the Atlanta Local Food Initiative, gives information about what they do to impact their community. ALFI is a “diverse coalition of stakeholders working to build a more sustainable food system for metro Atlanta” (Atlanta Local Food Initiative). Coalition meetings are held every other month, and those involved in the ALFI like communities within Atlanta, nonprofits, universities, government agencies, individuals and corporations participate in these meetings. They have organized public speaking events to raise awareness for the challenges of food systems in Atlanta and all over the world. This particular event was the Food System Summit in 2012 at the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The following image is one that they used during the event.

The website can be a tool for me to explore how ALFI’s methods of getting involved are making an impact on the communities that they touch. I will analyze the methods of public speaking, the competitions they are involved in with the amount of local food grown, and their other methods of spreading this local food movement.

Annotated Bib 9 ACFB Statistics

“Hunger in America Study 2014.” ACFB RSS. Atlanta Community Food Bank, n.d. Web. 25 Mar. 2016. <http://acfb.org/facts-stats>.

This article by the Atlanta Community Food Bank has many statistics from 2014 about families that rely on the food bank temporarily or for many years. According to the article, every year 1 in 7.5 people around Atlanta and north Georgia rely on food pantries and meal service programs to feed themselves and their families. Additionally, more than half of the households relying on this food bank make less than $1000 dollars a month.

Additionally, they mention that those surveyed confess that they have had to chose to eat inexpensive, unhealthy foods because that is the only thing that they can afford. Many people do not support government programs like this because they think that the people relying on them use it as a crutch. They say that now they are getting free or discounted food, they can stop looking for a job and can rely on the government for sustenance. However this article addresses this thinking by including the statistic that 59% of the families served by the ACFB have been employed in the past year.
This article can be an important point in my analyzation by having the facts at my fingertips.

Annotated Bib 8 Food Desert Solutions

“Food Access Challenge.” Center for Civic Innovation. N.p., n.d. Web. 22 March 2016. <http://www.civicatlanta.org/food-access-lab/>.
This webpage was made by an organization called Center for Civic Innovation. This group works towards solving the food desert problem across the United States. They attack the issue in many different ways like working with local landholders to grow foods, educating children in the area about the importance of nutritious food and how to be proactive about a positive change in their diet, and farm-to-table freshly prepared meals for children at school. The site gives the opportunity for the visitor of the webpage to get involved or to leave a donation, and it provides contact information to all of the entrepreneurs that lead the food desert solution projects listed above.

It is important to be aware of how the issue I am discussing is being overcome, and I can evaluate what tactic or tactics may be the most effective. Along with the work being lead and encouraged by Michelle Obama, these organizations have the opportunity to make an impact on many needy families.

Annotated Bib 7 Food Deserts

Gallagher, Mari. “USDA Defines Food Deserts.” Nutrition Digest. American Nutrition Association, 2010. Web. 22 Mar. 2016. <http://americannutritionassociation.org/newsletter/usda-defines-food-deserts>.
This scholarly work provides information on the food desert problem in the United States. A food desert is described as a one mile radius where no supermarkets or access to fresh foods are available. This is a growing problem, and it poses a threat to those that are unable to drive. For people that rely on public transportation, the time it takes them to get to a grocery store is multiplied many times over when being compared to the time it would take them to dive there. Those that are stranded in these food deserts tend to be surrounded by places like gas stations or small food shops which have an abundance of processed foods with high sugar, saturated fats, and low nutrition.

Michelle Obama has brought attention to the food desert problem, and the Healthy Food Financing Initiative (HFFI) is working to supply these small shops with nutritious and fresh foods. Although action is taking place, it will be many years before the affected families will have access to the nutrition they need.
This source is a helpful reference for the explanation of and background information is has about food deserts.

Reading Summary 6 Color Walking

In RadioLab’s article called “Color Walking” by Phia Bennin and Brendan McMullan, they encourage people to observe a specific color each day and see where it takes them. Going day by day, we tend to ignore the vibrant colors around us and do not notice how these colors can be connected to form the beautiful masterpiece that the world is. When people make a conscious effort to notice these colors and their connections, the world becomes a more interesting place and one’s perspective of their environment is subject to change.

Sumner, Thomas. “Why Some Rainbows Are All Red.” Science News. N.p., 18 Dec. 2015. Web. 09 Mar. 2016. <https://www.sciencenews.org/article/why-some-rainbows-are-all-red>.

In the podcast called “Color” by RadioLab, they discuss how the ability of sight is different in various species and even in different people. The majority of humans are trichromatic, meaning that they have three cones in order to see color: blue, green, and red. These three cones and the combination of them allow us to see millions of shades of colors. However, there are some women that are tetra chromatic, meaning that they have a yellow cone in addition to the other three cones. This is possible because women have an XX chromosome, so all women are born with the potential ability to have four active cones; although, in most women the fourth cone is not active. The interesting thing about this discovery of the active fourth cone is that these that tetra chromatic women can be found by doing a DNA test. However, when these women are found, few of them actually see the slight differences in colors that look the same to most people. Living in the artificial trichromatic world that humans have made for themselves, most tetra chromatic women are surrounded by an environment where they cannot express this unusual trait. For example, T.V.s, the ink in printers, and artificial food colorings are all trichromatic to name a few. Her brain has not been conditioned to see these unfamiliar colors because she is only surrounded by a trichromatic world. It was found that the women in an environment where they are more exposed to the natural colors of the world are more likely to be able to see these slight differences in color. For example, a florist or interior designer may have conditioned their brains to see these different colors whereas a secretary is not as likely to have done so.

This discovery puts a new spin on the first article that was mentioned because when looking to notice the colors surrounding you, there is even more depth if you are a tetra chromatic woman. It is a fun exercise to practice what the article suggests which is to pick a specific color at the beginning of the day and notice as many things as you can that are that color and the various shades of that color. A tetra chromatic woman may be able to challenge herself and pick out how two colors may vary and how many different colors they see at sunset. This exercise attempts to make a greater connection with people and their surroundings and it may spring a more powerful interest in careful observation.

Interior Built Environment Description Sweet Auburn Market

The Sweet Auburn Curb Market, on Edgewood Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia, strikes people in many different ways. It can be visualized as a piece of Atlanta’s history, a gathering place of community, or a convenient place to stop for lunch. Walking through the maze of booths, there is so much to see and to smell. As soon as you enter the market, the smells of grilled hamburgers and sweet popcorn fill your nose.

The environment symbolizes a warehouse with the visible, rustic piping and concrete flooring. The neatly decorated booths clearly advertise what they sell and are more professional looking than a typical market. The authentic decor at each station makes it unique from the rest and makes some stations more attractive than others depending on the shopper’s preference.

Throughout the building there are vendors that sell fresh fruits and vegetables, fresh meat, and they even have a walk up pharmacy for convenience. As a visitor of Atlanta, the market is a must-see landmark, and it can easily be enjoyed from being surrounded by the smiling faces and freshly cooked food. On the other hand, booths like the pharmacy are more commonly visited by the community members as opposed to the Atlanta explorers. Families of Atlanta have relied on the market for decades in the case that they do not have the transportation to go to a grocery store. For some, the market is the only place where access to fresh food is available.

In addition, the market is a place of reliance for people like Matt Hinton who works as a part time teacher and was not making enough money to support his family. The market gave him an opportunity to start his own restaurant, Bell Street Burritos. Since the market opened in 1924, it has given entrepreneurs like Matt a place where a new or small business can have the chance to be successful. The market provides an opportunity for vendors to have a stall as opposed to having to dedicate much more time and money to open a storefront. The stall allows someone to open their restaurant much sooner in the case that they do not have the resources to open their own store. This dual responsibility that the market has for its visitors allows people to realize how important having fresh foods is and the crucial role that the market plays in its community.
