4.3 Translate Analysis into Plain English

This module cannot teach you about statistics or analytical tools. But, as you learn those concepts and tools, you should learn to express them in Plain English. Doing so will improve your mastery as well as your communications.

Know what question each analytical method asks. Each method was designed to ask a very specific question of the data – Is there a difference? Is there a relationship? Does X predict Y?

These questions can be expressed mathematically in a very precise form, such as hypotheses and formulas. However, describing the questions, answers and their implications in Plain English will allow readers with different levels of statistical training to understand the approach and value for decision-making.

This approach does not mean “dumbing down” the analysis. It means finding a common language. Provide any necessary technical information in a form as well thought out as the rest of the report. Do not insert the computer printout assuming that more statistically-minded readers will be able to interpret it properly.

Regression may be expressed precisely as a formula:

Y=a+b1X1+b2X2+b3X3+e

Instead, your reader may need to know you…” used regression to determine how well expenditures on advertising…”
