Spring 2014 Fundraising Meeting (Part 1)

As mentioned in our last posting, we are opening up a Google Doc for all those who would like to contribute ideas to the Spring 2014 Fundraising meeting scheduled for this Friday (March 14) at 1:00 p.m. but are unable to attend. You may also post ideas if you are planning on coming to the meeting and would just like to have them written in the document before hand.

To access this document, please follow the link for the Spring 2014 Fundraising Ideas & Planning sheet. This link should bring you to a page that will prompt one of the New Voices staff to add you as a collaborator. You may also e-mail us to request access to this document, and we will be happy to add you as well. Once in the document, please fill out a row by providing your name, a brief explanation of your idea, a proposed date for the event, and any additional notes for consideration. Additionally, feel free to mark the last box in an idea’s row for which you would like to cast a vote. We look forward to discussing all of this input at Friday’s meeting.

Please be sure to check back here for more updates after the meeting, and don’t forget to sign up for our mailing list for more updates.

Volume 3, Number 2, Themed Issue on Monstrous Beauty and the Beauty of Monstrosity

Beauty, like Monstrosity, is a cultural construction framed by the fears, anxieties and aspirations of a particular time and place. Yet the configuration of both as tools of inclusion and/or exclusion position them more as sides of the same coin rather than Manichean opposites. This is clearly seen in the way that many monsters are often shown as beautiful, luring their victims into their dead embrace, just as Beauty itself is revealed as a cruel and thankless master/mistress, whose monstrous nature is hidden beneath a veneer of aesthetic perfection. Within this, of course, are also the ways that the Monster is itself shown to be beautiful, not necessarily for any exterior attributes, though this is sometimes the case, but for an inner, spiritual splendour that points to universal qualities beyond that of simple perception.
This special issue of the Monsters and the Monstrous journal will explore all facets of the ways that cultures, throughout time, have conflagrated the two concepts, to show the ways that the monstrous is truly beautiful and that beauty is the stuff of nightmares.

The Editors welcome contributions to the journal in the form of articles, reviews, reports, stories, poems and art and/or visual pieces on the following or related themes:

-Monsters that use beauty as a lure or trap (vamps, sirens, lamias etc.)
-Monster as non-normative beauty, and the beauty of the non-normative
-The Sublime and beauty to monstrous excess
-Beauty that leads to monstrous obsessions/actions (i.e. Narcissus, Dorian Gray, Snow White’s Evil Queen, Countess Bathory)
-The monster as a form of perfection/beauty (i.e. in films such as Alien, poetry of William Blake)
-Beauty that hides a monstrous ideology (i.e. in political poetry of Yeats)
-Beauty and the Beast: contradictions in the outer manifestation of an inner state
-Beauty as a commodity used for monstrous ends
-Beauty as human/man-made creation: body modification/enhancement, cosmetic surgery and skin art
-Queering beauty and the monstrous: Cultural and social monsters as forms of non-normative beauty
-Didactic lessons on beauty via narratives on monstrosity (i.e. fairy tales, myths)
-Genderisation of monstrous beauty
-Death and beauty

Submissions for this Issue are required by Friday 6th September 2013 at the latest.
Contributions to the journal should be original and not under consideration for other publications at the same time as they are under consideration for this publication. Submissions are to be made electronically wherever possible using either Microsoft® Word or .rtf format.

We also invite submission to our review section on current fiolms and books and also our special feature on Non-English Language Book Reviews. Please mark entries for these topics with their respective headings.

All accepted articles, artworks and prose pieces will receive a free electronic version of the journal.

Length Requirements:
Articles – 5,000 – 7,000 words.
Reflections, reports and responses – 1,000 – 3,000 words.

Give Yourself the Perfect Hanukkah Gift – Send Us a Proposal for New Voices 2013 by December 10th!

New Voices Conference CFP – Revised Deadline

Back when we were first deciding when to set the deadline for submitting an abstract for New Voices 2013, we  talked about December 11th as the date.  Then we decided that that date would be too late, and so we settled on having it a week earlier, just before finals.  What didn’t occur to us is that we graduate students don’t take finals; we’re all writing seminar papers in the week before finals.  So between completing papers for classes you’re taking and/or helping droves of freaked-out freshmen complete their papers for classes you’re teaching, you probably don’t have a whole lot of time to knock out that abstract that you’ve been meaning to send for New Voices 2013.  For that reason, we’re extending the deadline for submitting a proposal to December 10th, 2012.

In other words, the CFP deadline is now just in time for the third night of Hanukkah.  So give the gift that keeps on giving:  send us your proposal for a presentation and/or a panel for New Voices 2013!  Whether you’re a Jew, a Christian, a Muslim, a Hindu, a Buddhist, a Rastafarian, or (like me) some species of secular humanist, saving a place for yourself at New Voices 2013 will continue to pay off for weeks, months, and even years to come.  New Voices is the perfect place for you to begin your scholarly career or to continue developing a career already in the making.  Plus, New Voices is an excellent opportunity to build professional and personal relationships that will last a lifetime.  Long after the last candle has been lit, the last present has been opened, the last chestnut has been roasted, and the holiday fruitcake has been stuffed into the back of the cupboard for the tenth year in a row, you’ll be enjoying the incredible benefits of having participated in New Voices 2013.

Good luck with writing your papers, and if you’re teaching, try not to go too crazy as you dig yourself out from under that avalanche of students’ final papers.  Happy holidays!

Fundraising, Treats and Other News

Dear New Voices followers:

This has been an interesting month in New Voices development.

First, we had a very successful cake raffle. The winner was Dr. Smolinski, who shared with the department. I hope you got some!

Laura Anderson (our cake maker) also made cake pops and other treats. They were amazing, and we managed to raise almost $85! Thanks to all who came and snacked.

In other news – the mugs came in and are being delivered to faculty members in the department. I lost the charger to my camera, so I haven’t been able to snap a photo. Soon though. Soon.

And – we have begun a book drive. Sigma Tau Delta has been kind enough to put their Better World Book collection on hold so we can start collecting a few sell-able books for fundraising. Please come by the bins on the 9th floor of GCB and deposit your old trashy novels and textbooks you never managed to sell back!

You may have found a flier in your box – and if you don’t have a box, Old Books Wanted, in the flier.

Last, but certainly not least, Anne Melfi made the minutes, and here they are, in case you need to catch up on all the little details:

Minutes–19 September 2012

STAY TUNED FOR THE NEXT MEETING DAY, TIME AND LOCATION!!

We really need all hands on deck for the bake sale fundraiser coming up in late October. So if you want to help – please come to the next meeting. I will post it soon.
