The Case

Jon Benet Ramsey was a 6-year-old pageant queen who was found murdered in the basement of her home in Boulder Colorado, December 26th, 1996. She came from two wealthy parents, John and Patsy Ramsey, and had an older 9-year-old brother, Burke.

That morning, her mother, Patsy Ramsey found a three-page ransom note for John Ramsey, written by someone who claimed to have kidnapped Jon Benet. The note also stated that the kidnappers were a foreign faction demanding $118,000 for the return of Jon Benet (Casarez).

After Patsy called 911, police and detectives quickly arrived at the Ramsey home. One of the main detectives, Linda Arndt eventually told John to search the house for anything suspicious (Casarez). That is when John found JonBenet dead “with a garrote fashioned out of rope embedded deep into her neck. . . rope around her wrists and a broken paintbrush that appeared to be from Patsy Ramsey’s art set” (Casarez).

Although there are many scenarios regarding who killed Jon Benet Ramsey, it is most likely that her brother, Burke Ramsey, accidentally killed her, and her parents staged a kidnapping to cover it up due to fear. The ransom note, 911 call, and Burke’s behavior before and after the murder all serve as evidence of his responsibility and John and Patsy’s involvement.
