Fall 2016: The Role of Money in the Long Civil Rights Movement to 1960

Eugene Martin, the dean of secretaries at Atlanta Life, is just one example of how the staff of Atlanta Lent a prominent amount of effort, time and finances to the Civil Rights Movement.

The Fall 2016 course examined role that Atlanta Life Insurance Company played in supporting the long struggle for civil

and human rights in America. The course also examined the role of major actors involved in creating social and political change in the Jim Crow South.

This course focused on several objectives including:

  • Investigating the Alonzo Herndon and Atlanta Life Company’s contributions to the long Civil Rights Movement spanning from 1865-1968
  • Learning various historical research methods such as using archival data and conducting oral histories
  • Employed these research methods to document the history of Alonzo Herndon, his family, and his company
