Bipolar Disorder

Characteristics of mania and depression & Medication:

  • “extreme happiness,
  • extreme irritability,
  • hyperactivity,
  • little need for sleep, and
  • racing thoughts, which may lead to rapid speech” (Grohol)
  • “extreme sadness,
  • lack of energy or interest in things,
  • inability to enjoy normally pleasurable activities, and
  • feelings of helplessness and hopelessness” (Grohol)
  • “Mood stabilizers (for mania),
  • antipsychotics (help if symptoms persist),
  • antidepressants (for depression),
  • antidepressant-antipsychotic (work as a depression treatment and mood stabilizer),
  • anti-anxiety medications (for anxiety and sleep) ” (Mayo Clinic Staff)

There are two phases in bipolar disorder: “an emotional high phase called mania and an emotional low phase called depression” (Mayo Clinic Staff). Patients sometimes switch back and forth between these two phases. During the phase of depression, the patients are very likely to be involved in hopelessness. Some might say people with depression should cheer up; however, it is not how that works. Patients hardly have any control over their mood. During the phase of mania, the patients will act energetically and make “poor decision” (Mayo Clinic Staff). According to Mayo Clinic Staff, the switch between two phases will also affect “energy, activity, judgment behavior and the ability to think clearly”. Medication is one of the essential treatment for bipolar disorder.

As a matter of fact, Elisa suffered from bipolar disorder, and her “major experience of bipolar disorder was fluctuations between mania and depression” (The Paranormal Scholar). The bizarre movement like jumping in and out of the elevator and making those gestures in the video perfectly fitted the description of the manic phase of bipolar disorder.
