Why was it created?

According to experts, there are four consensus reasons to as why the founding fathers established the Electoral College.

1. Education– Due to a lack of schooling available in the 1700’s, the founding fathers believed the average citizen to not be intelligent enough to understand the complex ideas of government.
2.Information Outlets– With few news and media platforms, the founding fathers did not believe citizens were informed enough on politicians agenda. By electing representatives, the people would be putting the power of the executive branch in the hands of those who are politically informed.
3. Small States– With tension growing between larger more powerful states and smaller states, the founding fathers wanted to empower the smaller states. By setting a minimum amount of representatives of two senators and at least one house member per state, the founding fathers hoped to even the playing field.
4. Establish Democracy– Having just been freed from Great Britain’s rule, the founding fathers wanted to establish democracy as the core value of America. By allowing the citizens to vote for who represents them politically, the founding fathers hoped this would establish the idea of citizen power, while minimizing their ability to make poor decisions about the executive branch.
