The Web Style Guide

Greetings and Salutations. I believe this is my last post for this semester. First off, I’d like to thank all of you for keeping up with this blog and taking your time to stop by.

Now, for this post, I recently read a guide on Web Style. It was a pretty informative blog that explained different formatting tips on Web Design.

Here are two tips on different Web Style.

First off, navigation is almost key in web style. Having an easy way to guide your viewers is crucial. If the viewer wants their information, they don’t want to go through 5 different links just to get a simple answer. Also, viewers want that information present immediately. Less effort, more benefits. Simple. Easy. Efficient.

Secondly, images and different graphics are nice. It’s great to have images to support your information and to “decorate” your website. However, putting too much graphics and pictures onto your page almost makes it look like a tornado hit your website. Too messy. Remember, simplicity is key. Be simple and clear about it. Just be careful not to be too bland. Viewers don’t want to stare at a white and black website all day. Throw some colors and make it flourish. Good luck!

Thanks for reading! Once again, good luck to everyone out there and take care of yourselves!

Best Regards!

3 Web Design Tips

Hey guys, how’s it going? I’m here to update on another way to improve your webdesign with some tips. I read these off of a website called Web Style Guide: Interface Design Section. So be sure to take note!

  1. Develop a draft. One effective way to create or develop a website is to start with a draft. Know how you want to lay out the design. Imagine and visualize how you want to send your message out on the internet!
  2. Consistency and Simplicity. Things on the website should be easy to read and each webpage should be straight to the point. No need to include too much information. Also, the pages should link with each other. This consistency helps keep readers from losing concentration. Fonts, theme, design should be simple and consistent as well.
  3. Efficiency. Efficiency is crucial when making a webdesign. Having a straightforward navigation menu is important to make sure viewers can easily navigate without struggle through your website.

That’s all I have for today. I hope these tips helped and make sure to take care of yourselves!

Best Regards!

3 Powerpoint presentation tips

How’s it going, everyone? Long time no talk! I’ve been busy lately so it’s been hard to update the blog. I hope everyone’s been doing well and taking care of yourselves.

So recently, I came across this powerpoint advice website on how to make a better powerpoint. It’s by Garr Reynolds known as “Top Ten Slide Tips.” I think it’s very useful if you went to go check it out!

Anyways, the site taught me some cool ideas and key pointers on making powerpoint slides. I wanted to share a few with you that I felt was pretty significant.

First one I thought was an important tip that many people tend to forget: Consistency with fonts and colors. It seems that people tend to use weird fonts or color schemes that make the text impossible to read. Be sure to avoid that and use more consistent font!

Second tip I found pretty important was the pictures used on powerpoints. Many powerpoints tend to use little cartoon-like pictures and sometimes pictures that are unrelated to the topic at hand. This is a huge distraction for the audience and can cause more hindrance than aid to your presentation. So be sure to keep an eye out for that!

Last tip I’m sure many people forget is simplicity. Don’t try to go crazy and create a work of art that can only be understood by you. Don’t go climbing the walls for aesthetics and avoid using bizarre types of transitions. Just keep the presentation simple and make sure you get your point across!

Well that’s it for this post. Thanks for reading!

Best Regards.

Acadia University Tutorial

Hello everyone! How’s it going?

For today’s blog post, I’ll be writing a review on a tutorial online called “Acadia University Tutorial.” This tutorial is very handy and important for students that need to learn how to cite for future papers. I personally felt that it was material that every high school graduate should already know. If you were admitted to a college, basic citation should be like taking a stroll through the park. In terms of plagiarizing, students are expected to already know the consequences. As a result, I feel that the tutorial didn’t really help me “learn” anything new, but it did provide a refreshing reminder. The tutorial shows many different forms of citation, from quotes to paraphrasing. Also, it shows how to cite and different forms of citing. It feels helpful in a sense to those that may need a reminder. But once again, personally, I felt that it was something that should be basic stuff like knowing your multiplication table before taking algebra. That said, hope you guys are doing well!

Best Regards.

Sunday with Netiquettes

Evening guys, it’s currently 7:17pm on Sunday, June 08th, 2015.

I hope you are all doing well.

So, for this post, I’m going with something I learned recently. I know that there’s basic standards for this day and age for online etiquette. However, one thing that I haven’t really thought of was how to deal with trolls. Now, from Urbandictionary, a troll is one who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument. If you used the internet, you definitely dealt with a troll once or twice in your experience. So question is, how do we deal with them? Something I learned online was a common solution known as the “don’t feed the trolls.” This generally means what it says. Don’t feed them. Don’t bother arguing, fighting, or replying back at them. Of course, some trolls out there start accusations and misconception of your image. Just remember, if you ever do feed the troll, try not to get your hand bitten. So when you reply back, be sure to be professional and show them that you’re not on their level. No need to insult them.  Be careful on how you interact with trolls. Because if you fall to their standards, you’re only creating a bad image of yourself.

2 Apps that College students should know about

How’s it going everyone? I hope you all are doing well and enjoying your summer.

So, for my next blog topic/assignment, I will be talking two mobile apps that you should probably know about and will make your college life easier.

The first one is something that everyone SHOULD have heard about, but one or two may haven’t. I’m talking about the glorious Google Drive. The Google Drive has to be one of the most innovative mobile apps of this era. This app can be downloaded onto your phone and provides a huge amount of storing space. Best part is the fact that this drive is in sync with your email. So when you check your email, it should be simple to check your drive as well. You can download this app onto your phone, so where ever you go, you will ALWAYS have your files and documents. Your phone can download the documents and send them through messages, or even emails. The Google Drive is compatible with the google docs and powerpoint, so you can use different types of google functions with the Google Drive. So, you should probably try using it! Great mobile app. (this sounded like an ad…)

Next mobile app that I wanted to talk about easybib. Now, this dates back into high school. I’m not sure how many of you had issues citing different literature for your essays in high school, but believe me when I say this: Easybib was the revolutionary prophet that even the teachers disliked because how easy it made our Language Arts lives. This mobile app provided an easy way to simply cite any sources that we came across and could cite formats that’s widely accepted (MLA, APA, etc.). Great app. You should definitely check this one out for sure.

That’s it for this blog post. Hope this helped you get an insight on different mobile apps that can help you through your college life! Good luck.

Best Regards!

Unit 2: Assignment 2

  1. justfacts.com
    • Currency: The website didn’t show any particular sign that it was updated on a daily basis. However, everything on the website seemed to work and also had an article that was recently posted on May 2015. Just Facts is a non-profit educational and research institute that first opened the website in 1997.
    • Relevance: The information on the website is relevant to the topic depending on what the reader is searching. For example, if you click the Union Facts section, the link provides a new page with a huge document that is relevant to Unions. It has an appropriate depth but seems like it would be hard to find certain information cause it asks for the reader to use “ctrl + F” to find it instead of tags. However, the information seems well organized and understandable.
    • Authority: The site has an about us tab that allows us to read about the authors. The credentials of the authors are also left next to the names and how they were funded. Contact information was given as well.
    • Accuracy: The information seems accurate enough because the website quotes different people and has their list of credentials of the writers.
    • Purpose: The purpose of the Just Facts website is to research and publish facts about leading public policy within the current era.
  2. factcheck.org
    • Currency: The website seemed to be updated on a daily basis. The website had different articles that were posted today and even had articles almost once everyday.
    • Relevance: The information on the website seemed relevant to what the topic was at hand. For example, there were different articles in the current events and debates happening for the readers to research and be informed on. The website seemed very easy to navigate through because of the actual headlines, archives and search tabs.
    • Authority: The site has an about us tab that verified the actual authors and journalists that worked for the website. Each has a listing of credentials. The about us tab also showed their awards, fundings and a way to contact the authors.
    • Accuracy: The information seemed very accurate because of the sources listed at the bottom of each article.
    • Purpose: The purpose of the Fact Check website is to “lower the deception and confusion in US politics.” The authors try to apply the best practices of both journalism and scholarship to increase public awareness, knowledge and understanding.

Unit 2 Assignment 1 Reflections

Hello everyone, how’s it going?

It’s Daniel, again. Updating the site with our recent assignment. So, for our Unit 2 assignment, I chose my topic to be about Taekwondo Olympic Sparring. It’s something I used to do as a competitive thing, but it died out after I started my sophomore year of college. Unlike most martial arts, it’s generally based on sports, hence the world Olympic. It’s more of a sporty feel to the martial art. Now, in relation to our assignment, I tried looking up and comparing results to the mainstream search engines, such as Yahoo, Bing and Google. Eliminating the “youtube” video links and “advertisements” of where the nearest seller is, I came to find that a lot of the search engines had very similar findings. Of course, not in the same order, but generally you saw the same Wikipedia, Olympic.org and information websites. The only differences that I comparatively saw was that Yahoo offered some weird results like “monkeysee and aol.”

For the three meta-search engines, I noticed that they were very similar in results. Same as the mainstream, the results were all similar and were just placed in different orders. In general, the searching assignment did show that the mainstream search engines provided a general wide variety of results; however, meta-search engines provided more intricate results.

Once again, best regards and thank you for reading!
